Wayne.

A well thought out and well executed diorama that tells a powerful story. I expect nothing less from you, Wayne!:salute::

I dont disagree but after watching private Ryan one might disagree

Jason, are you referring to the German (Heer) soldier that they released earlier in the movie. Many viewers (including myself initially) think he reappears later in the movie to kill Sgt Mellish in the house. However they are not the same guy, the later soldier was Waffen SS, not regular German Army.

Interesting.......my understanding is that the German who stabbed Sgt Mellish was an SS character and not the 'Steamboat Willie' (Heer) German who Miller blindfolded at the bunker. However 'Steamboat Willie' does appear again later in the movie and is the German who shoots Miller on the Bridge and who then is dispatched by Upham.

The uniforms are the give away, but the short haircuts confuse many.

Yes that's what actually happened, and no doubt there are plenty of people that think they're the same German soldier. Upham doesn't learn, he shoots Willie but lets the other Germans get away, he's almost as annoying as Dr Smith on Lost in Space ^&grin

I don't get it. If he's not the same German soldier, why did he spare Upham's life when coming down the stairs after stabbing Mellish?

I would say the SS bloke simply didn't view Upham as being a threat of any kind.....more a pathetic coward maybe?

He'd just allowed him to dispatch Sgt Mellish, when he had plenty of opportunity to run up the stairs and pop the SS guy while he and Mellish wrestled on the floor.

[FONT=Noto Sans, Arial, sans-serif]It was both a harrowing and frustrating scene, but gripping all in the same breath.

Pretty tragic really when an SS soldier doesn't even believe you're worth a bullet....

Always have found the entire sequence, Mellish being stabbed and then Upham being ignored as not worth the effort, as the most disturbing sequence in the movie. Mellish trying to talk the German into waiting (why would he wait?) and then the contempt shown to Upham I found to be very subtle human moments. -- Al

I know what you mean and concur entirely. The movie is truly confronting on so many levels and almost leaves an after taste of sorts.

The 'Mellish' scene is horrendous as is the build up to it and the aftermath just as compelling.

I remember going to see it at a theatre with my brother in-law and his teenage son. His son was quite disturbed by it and couldn't believe the American troops would callously shoot surrendering Germans.

My response was that's war mate, brutal and uncompromising in the extreme.......
