Early war TIGER (1 Viewer)

Terry; I think you are refering to the Goldilocks Scale; not too big, not to small, just right! My personal view is toy soldiers are reverting to the 70mm size figures originated by Lineol and Hauser in the 1930's. Everything Old is New Again! I use the K&C WWI Germans with my 1930's Marklin artillery and they work very well!

I haven't noticed the figures getting bigger but the AFVs seem to have increased in size. If I had to guess, I would say the WWII scale standard for both figures and AFVs is now 1:28 for K&C and TCS but still 1:30 for FL.

Terry; I agree about the vehicles. Figarti, First Legion and Thomas Gunn are all a true 1/30 scale. K&C can vary between 1/32 and 1/28, it depends on when it was made. TCS vehicles vary between 1/28 and 1/27 scale currently. I have figures from K&C, TCS and Figarti that I have measured with a digital caliper at 68mm; top of base to top of head. Male human bodies vary between 5'6 and 6'2 on average so height of a figure is not critical except when they are half a head taller than the deck height of a Tiger or Panther. I just wish the various manufacturers would accuratly specify their products!

I'm curious if the latest K&C Tiger is even larger than 1:28. If they get much bigger K&C will face a problem similar to the one the Germans faced. The Tigers were too heavy for most bridges. Will the K&C Tigers become too heavy for most display shelves? {sm2}{sm4}

Terry; several collectors that purchased the super sized Tiger I that TCS produced had the same concern. It went perfectly with the current large figures but was very heavy. Also it would not work with the 1/30 size vehicles, so it was a stand alone display piece. My choice for a proper scaled Tiger I was the Tamiya 1/25 scale model; which is large but light, as it uses heavy gauge polystyrene already molded in Panzergrau. No paint required, plus all the hatches open and the suspension and tracks move like a real tank. Whats not to like!

Kilted Vampire; I will be very interested in learning the deck hight of the K&C WS311 Tiger I. The width would also be a useful parameter in calculating the actual scale. This is the first K&C early production Tiger I; that I have seen where the figure that comes with the vehicle is proportionate.

If the new K&C Tiger is a true 1:30, is the figure smaller than 1:28?

I understand that historically the revised turret with the low cupola and the application of Zimmerit were simultanious revisions in mid to late 1943. Are you aware of Early production Tiger I's with Zimmerit? I have been unable to find a photo in my library. I suppose it could be considered a field application to an older or repaired vehicle. IMHO this is the best Tiger I K&C has made to date; except for the choice of color! Regards

Here is a Tiger in the Jentz and Doyle book on Tigers. They claim it was produced in June 1943 and field applied zimmerit sometime after the January 1944 modification order on field applied zimmerit. The zimmerit is applied in the distinctive field applied pattern specified in the order.

Terry; Wayne on the K&C thread on the WS 311 Tiger I said the scale is the same as the previous K&C early Tiger I's. A true 1/30 with a 60mm deck height would require the figure to also be 60mm. The photos of the Panzer and figure on that thread indicate the figure is shorter than the deck; which is good! Thank You for the photo of the Tiger I with the field applied Zimmerit.
