End Of My Collecting Career (1 Viewer)

Good luck with the move mate, a castle all of your own is definitely something worth cutting back a bit for;).

Seriously though, hope to still see plenty of you on the forum. Like a lot of people have already pointed out, it really doesn't matter at the end of the day how big your collection or budget might be - what's important is the interest and fascination with these topics that we all share here. And that's something that for better or worse, (and I think it's definitely the former) never goes away, no matter what adjustments or compromises we might have to make to our actual expenditure.

Talk to you very soon I hope,

Molloy.

Wellington,
don't go too far! Look forward to conversing and trading with you in the future. By the way, the cannonball trade is still the most unique trade I ever made!!!!!!

Hi Wellington,

Sorry to hear about your dilemma. I too have recently had to scale back my collecting habits as a result of moving the family to a new town. We moved in order to be closer to family and improve our lifestyle (we literally made a 'sea change' moving from the desert to the coast). As a result we have had to sacrifice some of our disposable income and I now have to be more selective about which items I can collect. I'm finding that I appreciate the items I do buy a bit more than before, but it means some difficult decisions when prioritising what to get. It would be much easier for me if K&C, Britains and First Legion weren't putting out quite so many tempting items each month. At least the slow down in my collecting has eased my other pressing issue, lack of space.

All in all it's been a good move for us, so the impact on my collecting has been a small sacrifice to make. I'm sure you'll find the same. You can still enjoy the hobby with a few key purchases, staying in touch on the forum and of course there's still your existing troops to play with.

Your more immediate challenge might be packing and moving your collection. It took me days to securely pack mine, longer than it took to pack the whole of the rest of the house (I hope you've kept your boxes). Luckily I managed to avoid any breakages and it was fun opening all the boxes again after a few months in storage.

Good luck with the move.

Adrian

QWellington,
You've made the right move, your priorities have shifted, though I'd be willing to bet this is no permanent end. I can't see you idly sitting by month after month just watching all the great stuff come out! There will definately be an adjustment time, but Friend....YOU JUST DON'T QUIT THE STUFF!!
It's in your blood and your affinity to this STUFF is in your sole. Take your time, do your thing, but you'll be back!!!!!

I agree I tried putting the whole collecting thing on the back burner but whenever I went on the internet to check something out I would find myself sneaking a peak at the K&C website. Eventually the sneaking a peak turned into a purchase here and there, now I'm right back in the full swing of things again and picking up something almost every month. I know its hard to resist and the only way I can afford what I can is there is always alot of OT at my place of employment. If that wasn't there the collecting would stop in a heartbeat because you got it right.....Family always comes first!

Good luck Wellington

I can identify. We just bought a house in January that more than doubled what we had before. I did just start a better paying job, and my second child just finished daycare today (that was over $900 a month), but those larger house payments do matter a lot. I have kind of gone in spurts with the toy soldier collecting over the past 8 years, and I was mostly into collecting Civil War artifacts and hockey memorabilia for a while. The soldiers are not as expensive as those things anyway!!!!

The problem is I finally have room to really display my collectibles, so I am torn because it has gotten me more interested in the soldiers again at at time when I would prefer not to spend as much on collecting. I finally bought a large curio for them, and I find myself buying more. I sympathize with you. I used to just buy a few at a time and would go months between buying figures, and I still enjoyed it. I think you can find a way to moderate and still stay in the hobby and have fun with it. Collectors are born, not made, as most of us can attest. I know I have collected one thing or another since I was a kid (a long time ago). Sometimes I think my money could be put to better use, but I can't stop myself.

My wife and I are about to start building a house. I am not going to have as much room for my figures as I have had in the past. Tonight I ended up listing several retired Naps in the Collector Classifieds to thin out my collection some. With a four month old baby in the house now, I really don't have as much money to spend on this hobby either. I do however have some K&C UK Crimean figures on the way though! :D I just couldn't help it.

Enjoy that new home first, then when you get time you can start setting up your basement the way you want to set it up, i went through the same situation, it's nice to have your own space for your personal collection, and once the dust settles in a few months you'll be looking at the new dispatches figuring out the ones you want, good luck in your move...sammy

Glad Wellington won't be leaving us.I for one really enjoy his take on Napoleonics.:)
