...............the Yankees have signed Teixeira to a contract, details yet to be announced. Reports indicate it is in the area of 8 years, 180 million, 22.5 million per. Actually, closer to 30 million per when you add in the hit they'll get due to the luxury tax.

So in the offseason, the Yankees have laid out 430 million......................................for three players.

Do us all a favor; sign Manny, Lowe and oh I don't know, four or five other guys and get your payroll up to 500 million a year. Then just go ahead and give the WS trophy to the Yankees and cancel the season.

Can you imagine the fall out if the Yankees don't win the World Series this year?

Must be a wonderful time to be a New York fan; Giants on the verge of back to back Super Bowl wins, Yankees sewing up a World Series title in December; yep, just swell.

Oh no! I guess this means the Orioles and Nationals are out of the race again.

The amusing/sad/comical/pathetic part to all of this is it appeared Borass had shot himself in the foot when he kept telling all interested parties there was a mystery team that had the highest offer in, which prompted the Red Sox and Angels (I'm sure they are thrilled to have made that trade to bring the guy to California only to see them lose him; when has a team EVER traded for a free agent to be at the deadline and retained the guy despite all the "I love it here, wouldn't mind spending the rest of my career here, the fans here are great" BS he spews) to pull out of the sweepstakes.

This left just the Nationals in the picture as the Yankees mantra was "We've spent enough and plan on scaling back our payroll" and they appeared out too.

But nope, those savy Yankees fooled everyone and backed up a Brinx truck and gave away the store to get this guy.

The Yankees now employ the four highest paid baseball players in the sport; Payfraud, "Captain Intangibles", CC "I never met a buffet I did not like" and Mark "I just want to play on the East Coast to be near my family" Texiera.

No excuses now Cashman; if your Yankees in their brand new stadium don't win it all, your head will be on a platter served up at the Steinbrenner Thanksgiving day feast down in Tampa.

Holy Moly! I just realized this also leaves the door open for Mussina and Clemens to unretire (#6 for Clemens) in order to get a shot at the World Series. Add in Petitte and the Yankees could have to deal with a new agent - AARP.

The sad part about all of this is the Yankees keep going back to the city of New York hitting them up for more money for their new stadium; meanwhile, they just dropped half a billion dollars on three players and shelled out another 30 million for the luxury tax.

Word on ESPN is they aren't done spending yet either; no wonder why Sammy is so torked off. ESPN is also reporting the Red Sox final offer was 168 million, so they lost out on the guy over 12 million dollars. Also, the Nationals offered somewhere in the neighborhood of 175 to 180 million, but he chose the Yankees offer instead............

Ever wonder what a REAL superstar like Teddy Ballgame or The Mick would have been worth in todays market? Staggers the imagination. -- lancer

I'm no Yankee fan but, hey, if they had the better offer, that's just the way it is and that's what Boras is all about. He's just out for the almighty buck but that's his job: to get the best deal for his clients.

I love how the Yankees keep on going without worrying about economics. I know they didnt offer to guys like Bobby Abreu which supposedly is a sign of the times but being able to spend 430 million on 3 guys is far beyond the range of anyone else. As a Braves fan I find it a bit sickening but I had my time in the sun back in the day with good ol' Ted.

Word is leaking out New York is where he wanted to go all along, so there you go.

Credit the Yankees for spending money like it's going out of style; having to sell seats in a new ballpark and not making the playoffs for the first time in 13 years will do that to you.

I never quite understood the Red Sox being interested in the guy in the first place; they already have a gold glove MVP caliber first baseman. They would have had to move him to third, and then what do you do with Mike Lowell, the 2007 World Series MVP who they just signed last year to a big contract.

It really made no sense IMO.

The Yankees on paper are a lock to win the east, looks like the Red Sox will have to battle it out with the Rays for the wild card........

New York is the greatest place to live if you are a sports fan. Its a huge city with a huge fan base which can support more teams than any other city, and spend the kind of money to make those teams capable of signing any free agents the teams need. In my lifetime (I'll be 41 next month), the Yankees have won 6 World Series and 10 penants, the Giants have won 3 Superbowls and 4 NFC Championships, the Mets have won 2 World Series and 4 Penants, and the Jets have one a Superbowl. That's 12 Championships and 19 Title games/series in 41 years in the two sports I follow. Throw in 2 Titles and 4 Finals appearances by the Knicks, 4 Stanley Cups and 5 Finals appearance by the Islanders and 1 Rangers Stanley Cup and 2 Finals appearances (I really don't care about Basketball and Hockey, but many NY sports fans do), and the total raises to 19 Titles and 30 Title games/series in 41 years. Is there any other City that has that many in my lifetime?

In response to George's comments about the spending, I don't know about Boston's cost of living, but here in New York, it is very high. If I have to pay a premium to live in New York, where I want to live, and to go to the Giants and Yankees games I want to attend, I expect my teams to spend the extra money they get from tickets, concession/souvenier/clothing/memorabelia and cable/TV money on getting the best players, and consistently winning.

It seems to working pretty well for the local teams - the Yankees and the Giants are among the most valuable franchises in sports, and never lose money, so it apparently makes good business sense.

I'm glad you think so highly of living in New York regarding sports Louis.

Let's compare Boston (your neighbors to the north) vs New York. First of all, you have nine pro sports teams; Giants, Jets, Knicks, Nets, Yankees, Mets, Islanders, Rangers and Devils. 19 titles and 30 title games/series.

We've got four teams, Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics, Patriots. In my lifetime (I'm 47) the Red Sox have 2 WS wins, 5 appearances, Patriots have 3 SB wins, 6 appearances, Bruins have 2 Stanley Cups, 7 appearances, Celtics have 14 Championships, 16 appearances.

That's 21 championships, 34 title games/series.

And we did it with half as many teams.

Merry Christmas.

Just remember..."it's not about the money" as Texiera will be saying during his next interview. I was looking forward to him going to Boston but as someone pointed out, we already have Lowell so who needs Texiera.

Merry Christmas to you too, George. Your city's teams have done very well for you in your lifetime. However, I thought you, like me, were principally a baseball and football fan, so I think I got more bang for my buck in my lifetime from my two favorite teams (Giants, Yankees) then you did from yours (Patriots, Red Sox). Plus, I have a feeling that by the time I hit 47 (by the way, you are in great shape for your age, much better than I am at my age) in 6 years and a month, I might have 2 more titles and 4 more championship game/series appearances. Than again, I'm sure your Pats and Celtics will have added a title or two by then. Aren't regional rivalries fun?

I also noticed that the Celtics and the Patriots went out and loaded up on talent last year, so I am not going to be embarassed by the Yankees grabbing up all the available talent this year.

Guys, Guys - would you really call the METS a professional sports team ??

hehehehe :p :p :p

Nice try Ron. Do you know what they used to say about Washington: First in war, first in peace, first in the heart of our countrymen and last in the American League ;) Looks like this still applies.

A sad commentary on society when they are paying guys this much to play ball. In many cities, the taxpayers have picked up the tab for new stadiums even though their public schools are falling down. In DC, the Nationals even refused to pay their part based on some legal issue. The city paid millions and now no one goes to the games. The stadium was 50-80% empty most of last season. I've said it before greed has ruined the game. Too many games, and too many expansion teams diluted the overall play. No one even watches baseball on TV anymore. The World Series ratings are in the tank. So how can they afford to keep it up? MLB has set itself up for a big fall along the lines of the NHL.

This is like watching Ken Burns' "Baseball" documentary, there's more to MLB than Boston and New York, y'know ;)

Really? Every year we Braves fans seem to bow to the glory that is Boston when they come to town. Were not supposed to?
