I also saw Messi is retiring from the national team after losing to Chile last night.

Argentina has had some brutal losses lately: losing the WC in extra time and losing the Copa de America two years in a row to Chile on PKs. As the best player in the world, a lot is expected of him, maybe too much.

Perhaps he will think better of it and change his mind.

Whilst not good that England lost the Icelandic commentator was good. He made Viking references and suggested England played like penguins and even managed to criticise English politicians.

Not sure if true but heard it said there are more volcanoes in Iceland than professional football players.

Its interesting being in Germany as their team seems to be doing well...lots of pride going on here. I still don't get soccer..."a game for normal sized guys with all of their teeth."

And that's the beauty of international soccer; it instills pride in people in their country when they do well.

Professional sports in the US are a joke compared to the Euros or better yet, the World Cup.

International soccer for me has passed the NBA regarding my interest level, it's closing in on baseball too; for me, the NFL is #1, or will be as long as BB and Brady are in place in New England. When either or both are gone, so will be my interest in what is fast becoming a joke of a sport.

Then hockey, then baseball, followed closely by International Soccer..................

I will be in Germany next week and if Germany gets to the semis, it will be a great to watch and hopefully be a part of.

Portugal eked out a win over Poland in the first quarter final. They're going to have to do much better to beat Wales or Belgium.

Wales v Belgium, here we go! Good luck John! Good luck Wales! Pob lwc Cymru!

A heck of a match. Wales is playing inspired football. They are a team. They created a lot of space and closed off space when on defense. Just a great match.

I agree Brad. The defensive wall that the Welsh players put up in the 6 minute of play was awesome. In a space of less than 30 seconds, they successfully warded off at least 3 to 4 shots on target.

However, I am not sure how they will do against Portugal.

Raymond.

Raymond,

I think it's doable. Although they will be without Ramsey and Davies, Portugal have not played well and aside from two goals against Hungary, Ronaldo has been awful. Counting the Champions League final, he has not been impressive. I wonder if he's fit. He also doesn't perform all that well when it matters, unlike Bale.

Brad,

I agree again. With momentum of the latest win and good luck, Wales can do it. Most importantly, they playing as a team and that is what it is needed win. Chris Coleman seems to be doing a fine job with the team in Euro 2016 after taking over upon the tragic death of Gary Speed in 2012. I recall Chris Coleman as a player with Fulham in the late 1990's.

The answer is yes. The rout is on. I guess the slipper didn't fit for Iceland.

I'm currently over in Germany on business. The hotel where I'm staying set up a big screen outdoors tonight to watch the match. It was packed but the crowd was silent as it became evident Germany wasn't going to win. It was a big disappointment. One of the people I was with said "maybe Europe won't hate us so much now."

An outstanding result. The French are shocked but they played fitfully and Griezmann did very little. Portugal didn't mind winning ugly and they did but their defense was overwhelming and Pepe was fantastic.

The championship stays in Iberia!
