Everyones Top 5 War Series (Mini) (1 Viewer)

This is much more difficult than movies I think, as they were all shown over many years - terrific list though. I like your list and was struggling to think of others enjoyed. These might include - Colditz, Secret Army and several mini series I can't remember the title of now. Rat Patrol and Garrisons Guerrillas were also prime viewing when I was a kid, but I don't think I would watch now.

I would probably be happy to settle for the first two to fill the five, they were that good.

Here goes for a first punt:

Band of Brothers:D

Sharpe:D

Does the recent 'Rome' count?

Oz will have help me out here - the 1970s Australian series about the guys left behind fighting the Japanese starred Peter Thompson I think - help Oz:confused: - (with a lovely dark haired English actress for company;)), we have discussed it before on the forum but I still forget. Anyway that was prime viewing for me in my teens.

Mash - until it was repeated to death I enjoyed watching that too.

I have the feeling I will remember many more once the thread starts humming.

Band of Brothers
Sharpe series
Hornblower series
Foyle's War
Secret Army

and some good documentary series were:
The Secret War
The World at War

As for MASH, that's what I would like to have done to Alan Alda's head after he ruined that series ;)

Kevin, I have tried to remember that Australian series you mentioned, but the name escapes me atm.

Band of Brothers, then down many notches, Tour of Duty, Combat, then Amos n Andy (Kingfish thought he was getting drafted, so that qualifies this series).

Oz, you just pushed MASH out with Hornblower, excellent series, thanks.

As for the Aussie series, I think is was something force but I could be wrong, I think the actress was Katy Wild or something like that.

1/ Dads Army
2/ Bilko
3/ Piece of Cake
4/ It Ain't Half Hot Mum
5/ The Sullivans

Only 3 & 5 were real series - but I don't care. Loved them all.

Band of Brothers
Hornblower
Hogan's Heroes (I know, its campy, but I love it)
F-Troop (Same)
Sharpe

Piece of Cake (No 1 despite the poor DVD transfer)
Band of Brothers
Sharpe (Again not the best DVD transfer)
Ivanhoe
Hornblower

I would rate Rome a close 6th and would have placed it higher if they had had some more legionary action, as they did very briefly in the first season. I really do love the two BBC series above but it annoys me to no end that their DVD video quality is not even up to premium VHS level. What is up with that; are other BBC DVDs like that?

And how could I forget Rat Patrol! Its gotta be at least tied for 5th on my list.

I loved Rat Patrol, as I did Combat but those are regular series not mini_series correct? At least that's what I thought the question was. If so, your original list was just fine.;)

Dads Army
Band of Brothers
Foyles War
Colditz
Danger UXB.

How 'bout:

"Holocaust" (with Michael Moriarty as an SS officer)
"North and South" (superb cast)
"The Winds of War" (again, a superb cast)
"From Here to Eternity"

Hmm, that's only four. Does "Shogun" count? It's set against a backdrop of civil war for the Shogunate.

Prost!

Agreed this is darn difficult.

I'm glad I read the posts before I posted.

Some of my favorites:

Band of Brothers and Foyle's War. Hard to separate the two. The last Foyle's War was on Sunday in NY area. Michael Kitchen is a superb actor. Great supporting cast. These are my top two.

Other good ones:

Shogun
Combat
Twelve O'Clock High

Anzacs.
Tour of Duty.
Sharpe.
Band of Brothers.
Dad's Army.

Agree Baron just recently watched North and South and Winds of War...great mini-series, Shogun would have to be up there and this is cheating a bit but the Time Tunnel (great episode about pearl harbour (from memory) and a couple of other battles too:D:D) and eh for wars in the future:D Battlestar Galactica, the new recent series is fantastic

I'll second that one.
