Facade vs full dimemsion???? (2 Viewers)

.... 2) to me the figures and vehicles are the focus of the display, not the buildings. The buildings are just "urban scenery" to place the vehicles and soldiers into a context.

Excellent points. I sometimes feel like I am a scenics collector as well.

The figures and vehicles or aircraft are the point of my collection. I own very little in the way of scenics mainly because of finances and space. The money and space go to my figures and there just isn't much of either left over for scenics, so fascades are the only way I can go. -- Al

Every other month or so, I tool around on the scenics pages. I have a pretty impressive want list. I have decided to buy all the scenics I want for one diorama each year- I factor that into my budget. For example, last year, I got all my Egyptian scenic items. This year, I think I will grab everything I need for my AWI set up. 2008- I got Gittins DDay sets.

It's funny how some of the company scenics can get crazy coin- I have all the older Egyptian pieces and they typically fetch $300 or so. The Roman barracks is off the grid- and yet the Gittens one, which imo is much better, is still available. Some of the KC, and especially Britains scenics, are collectors pieces in their own rights.

i like them both, i love my arnhem biuldings, but yet the normandy facades look great in my curio. i love the conte church i have. german armour looks great parked next to it. but i must admit space is becoming a real problem

Hawkeye....

The price would be unbelievable and the size but, I would really like something like that as the ultimate display for my LAH 1st Kompanie

Same here. "My name is Sandor, I I am addicted to scenic buildings.":D:D:eek::p Yeah, I have all the WBritain Civil War (except for the hasty works and some crops; they don't fit in with my stuff) and Napoleonic scenics, plan to get their WWI, Jane Austen, AWI, and Zulu buildings/scenics. I also plan on Hudson and Allen's French Village, JG's Hougoumont, redoubt, gabions, tents, and Napoleonic suitable facades, John Jenkins' stockade, carts, and limbers, and lastly K&C's Normandy farm. So yeah... I say scenics addiction is a very real disease:eek::D

Personally I prefer a "high relief" building, a facade plus an inch or two od side wall. 1) it saves valuable display space and 2) to me the figures and vehicles are the focus of the display, not the buildings. The buildings are just "urban scenery" to place the vehicles and soldiers into a context. There will always be a place for a few "full" buildings, but most of my wants are facades.

as i also do

I like and have both, but I favor the facades (flats) because they give me much more room on my shelves. Some of them are also very interesting sculptures - just by themselves. Castleworld Displays offers some excellent scenery and buidlings if you are interested. Here's the site, but it's not up to date: http://www.castleworlddisplays.com/kits.html

I'm an Elastolin collector, and this company was quite good at supplying flat backgrounds - both trees and buildings - that really brought your collection to life. I'd love to see flat vehicles and other eye candy that create an atmosphere - for example, for JJ WWI planes, I'd like a flat aerodrome buidling, motorcycle, and maybe a service vehicle or two. What a scene that would be on my shelf!!!! I know this is heresy, but I'd even be a buyer of flat background figures looking the same as the rounds we buy. If you want to assemble a mass display, this would be a gerat help in terms of cost and space. I'm thinking of how many museums do this in displays with rounds in the foreground and flats in the rear. Think of a charge of the Scots Grays with maybe 15 rounds up front and another 20 flats of the same figures in the back. Wow!

I also think that in designing the full-round buildings, it would be very helpful if the buildings were designed to be displayed in halves - like the JJ Blockhouse for the St. Francis series. Again, this gives you more shelf options and allows for those with space to display it as a whole.

I'm delighted to see manufacturers giving us more scenic backgrounds. They do a much better job of building this stuff than I do with foam! :)

Great thread, Walt!!

Well this has been a topic that seemed to have plenty of input. One thing for certain (Manufacturers please note) that BOTH full dimension and facades are clearly needed by collectors.

So let me ratchet it up a bit.........how about buildings that can serve both, as noted in PJ's prior thread.

Photo below (from PJ's collection) of a Jenkins blockhouse (yes I realize this is a K&C Thread) used in its facade format, but I have seen many displays using the same piece joined at its edges for a full dimension piece. I have looked at some of the K&C desert buildings and it doesn't seem unreasonable future releases could incorporate this dual purpose. Any interest here from collectors for dual purpose???

Foliage also lends it's self to facade presentation (reference the trees on the opposite shore of of a Lake George display from one of PJ's cabinets) as well as mixed with a building.....another photo, this time an Elastolin log cabin with trees facade as a backdrop to some K&C Eastern Woodland Indians ( You guessed it, another photo from PJ's fine collection)

Any interest in foliage, or lets get really out of the box.....PROFILES of Aircraft or Vehicles for use as backdrops to the full dimensional subjects to add depth and interest to a display at a much reduced expense in space and $$

Interesting points about the vehicle/plane facades. I could see the role they could play in dio form but, they would not be something I would like to have in a collection I wonder if they would also be any great reduction in price as they would still have to be painted to a high standard and would have to be made sturdy enough to not be fragile. Its certainly innovative and they would look good but, IMO I would hope K&C keep only to producing building facades than a range of some of the things your post refers to

Just to further illustrate Walt's point, here's a flat I did of the Baron and his Fokker. Imagine several flat figures like this (plane only) in the correct size sitting in the background for your "real" JJ Fokker.

Another example is at this TF thread where the buildings for the flats displayed are made of paper. Scroll down a bit to find the troops in the town.

All kinds of possibilities!!

The Fokker and the Baron are really quite nice looking. Not a bad idea at all. -- Al

Thanks, Al.

I'm not sayig there is no room for full round backgrounds - only that a combination of facade and full rounds might be a great display and space-saving too!

FWIW, I've been thinking of making my own paper cut-outs mounted on foam!

There's room for all.

That is a good idea, I used printed buldings stuck to foamcore for my Durbar display.
