Being born in mid 60s and having older sisters, I have a taste for music that runs from ABBA to Sabbath. I still remember my sister's boyfriend bringing over Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Aerosmith Get Your Wings. Brings me back to the days of bell bottoms and banana seat bicycles.:):) First album I bought was Styx Grand Illusion and Beatles "Red" album. First concert was Journey with Bryan Adams and still going to shows today. Saw Styx about a month ago. Great show but no Dennis DeYoung.

Favorite bands are Zep, The Beatles, The Doors, Who, Kinks, The Yardbirds, Aerosmith, Asia, Rolling Stones and U2. Lot of other great musicians that deserve a nod such as Ritchie Blackmore & Rainbow, Jeff Beck, SRV, Hendrix, Queen, The Clash, The Jam.

For rock music the 60s-late 80s was the best period. Some bright spots here and there since but nothing will ever compare to that era.

Sorry, my tastes are rather run-of-the-mill. Stuck in the way-back machine. I rate The Beatles as #1, no contest. Other favorites are Rod Stewart, Elton John, Rolling Stones, some Led Zepp. Really like U2, Peter Gabriel for their willingness to expand their music. Like AC-DC for opposite reason, they are always consistent. Also like Fleetwood Mac, mainly for Rumors. -- lancer

Mine are all over the map. In rock, I like Iron Butterfly but only for one song, In-a-gadda-davida, great mindblowing song. First love was the Beatles (had their first album), Animals and early Stones up until Beggar's Banquet. Their early blues-based stuff is great. Favorite album is Between the Buttons. Don't have much use for post 60s stuff. It's ok but I'm a 60s child. Mountain is good also, Steppenwolf, Donovan ("Mellowyellow"), so forth and so on.

Like the blues, since it's the foundation of jazz, which ultimately led to r & b and rock. The old standbyes like Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Howlin' Wolf ("Red Rooster") are great.

In jazz, too numerous to mention, except I'll single out the Bird (Charlie Parker) and Dizzy Gillespie, the founders of Bop, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers (progenitors of hard bop, along with Miles) and Hank Mobley. Let's not forget Bud Powell, one of the greatest pianists in any genre who ever lived, and Dexter, a great tenorist. Also love (but my family hates) the organ, particularly Jimmy Smith.

My son makes me listen to metal so I kind of like Lamb of God.

Anybody like Amy Winehouse? Great voice, but will she become another Janis Joplin?

Eric Clapton before his son died

I was just curious why Clapton before his son died? I liked Clapton until I read his autobiography. He is nothing but a crybaby. Had all the great breaks in life music wise and blessed with a great talent plus he was married to Patti Boyd and wrote one of the best rock songs ever, "Layla". Sounds like a good life to me but he came across as feeling sorry for himself at every stage of his life.

Steely Dan, Led Zep, Grand Funk, Doobie Brothers, Tower of Power. Dave Matthews Band is pretty good.

To all the Texans out there I take my hat off to your state. It gave the world Townes van Zandt, Terri Allen, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock. I know my life would have been a little poorer without these Texas troubadors.
Who knows one day I will make a pilgirmage to Lubbock.

It's alternative stuff for me - Joy Division, Interpol, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, British Sea Power, Sigur Ros, The Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, The Shins, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths, Death Cab for Cutie. Current favourites are The National - saw them play in Brisbane earlier this year - AWESOME!!!

Larry,

Before his son died Clapton was a rock guitar god, afterwards, he lost his edge and wrote only ballady stuff and blues, none of which appealed to me.

Before Clapton became the rock god that he is, he was a blues player, having played with John Mayall and the Blues Breakers. The Blues is a huge influence on some of the big groups from the 60s: Beatles, Stones, Cream, Led Zeppelin, you name it. Seems like Clapton just returned to some of his roots.

Favorites:

1. Ozzy Osbourne
2. AC/DC
3. Iron Maiden
4. Judas Priest
5. Metallica
6. Billy Joel
7. Elton John

Very diversified interests!

Tom

Clapton was with The Yardbirds prior to John Mayalll and left due to the commercial direction the band was taking after "For Your Love". He was replaced by Jeff Beck.
