Favorite Sherman (1 Viewer)

I was never keen on the sherman as a AFV but, there are some nice pics in this thread

Yes it sure did have a troubled history didn't it, totally outclassed by German armour especially in Normandy. And you needed stones of steel to go up against the Tigers and Panthers in one, thank god for the Firefly and its 17pdr, and people like Trooper Joe Ekins of Northants Yeomanry who did away with Wittman and ended his long and prolific career.

Rob...

I would have only been interested in the reverse gear and, how fast it got me away from german armour!!!. It was not nicknamed the ronson for nothing. As you say though these guys went up against some serious german armour and got on with it knowing how poor their tanks were!!!!! Astonishing

The Sherman tank crews were probably some of the bravest SOB'S of the war! Although outclassed, they were superior in many ways. They were mechanically sound, easy to fix, did well in european city limits and were adaptable to many more fighting environments, then those super heavy Tigers. I would not want to be in an open field against them in a sherman. No matter how you slice it, the Sherman with its vast numbers, played an important role in winning the war.

The Sherman was indeed reliable, more so than the Tiger or Panther, but in terms of armour and firepower it wasn't in the same league as those two. With it's lethal tendency to catch fire it was not the place to be on a one on one with the Tiger. There are accounts (depending on range of course) of an 88mm shell passing right through and out the other side and of even a glancing blow setting off ammo inside the Tank. Having said all that it was loved by it's crews and the sheer numbers of them began to swamp German armour after D day. It certainly did play it's role in victory and I know from talking to ex crew they thought very highly of it. It earned it's place as an icon of WW2

The official doctrine of the time listed the M4 Sherman as a sort of infantry tank. All anti-tank work was a task actually intended for tank-destroyers and crews. Speed was essential in order to bring the tank-destroyers from the rear to destroy incoming tanks. Fortunately for Sherman crews, this doctrine was not entirely used. Thus, it would create a small window of time accounting for the weakness in the armored battalion, until tank destroyers moved to the front. Obviously this would make it harder for an armored force to achieve a breakthrough, (a main objective of armor), if the enemy had tanks. In addition, we find it would also be easier for an opposing armored force to achieve a breakthrough against an American tank battalion, which would not have all of its anti-tank assets at the front during the beginning of any attack.

Am I the only one who likes the classic Sherman ?
What's wrong with it?

standard sherman is a decent enough tank but, would like to see a k&C brit tulip

Warbuff - what a great display! Even though I am a notorious "Shermanoholic" I stayed away from replying so far. (Favorite Sherman? ALL OF THEM!) Your display is quite impressive and the layout of the unit being inspected by GSP makes the scene make sense. That's a vrey impressive collection of US armor. Just out of curiousity, how big is the display?

Thanks for sharing with us.

Great lineup of Shermans Warbuff! Looks fantastic.{sm4} Just curious, why do you have 6 Shermans from set DD045? {eek3}

Warbuff,that is quite an impressive collection of U.S. 1/30 scale firepower you have there. !

I actually have 6....I bought a collection off of a guy in order to get a couple of items I needed.....he would only sell the entire collection in one piece......and for some reason he had 6. I'm not in the ebay selling business so I still have them all....I took a couple out to make this scene.
