Favorite Toy Soldier Pick Up in 2010 (1 Viewer)

Hi ecuriel - thanks for the advice about the bronze of the Iwojima Memorial. I've had a look - and like it very much indeed. I would really like a 54mm figure size version to make up and paint - but I must admit the 14" tall version is stunning.
I'm just a bit worried that transferring that sized fine art object from the USA to my backwoods site - might mean it would arrive in a kit of parts too!

If I can't get one any other way though - I will reconsider it. Thanks for the tip.

Hi trooper. Thanks for the advice about the WW1 gun team. You must be a mind reader - because I looked at that one last month - when I was in the UK. I did like the look of the version shown here, however.

I am currently painting two projects. (a) Mounties Band and (b) WW1 Drum & Fife band - from - "Fusilier"!! I saw the gun team when I ordered the band - and have it on my wish list for later on this year. I can report that the detailing on Fusilier products is excellent.

I already have one Kings Troop version of a gun-team (The Britain's Centenary model). The reason that I exceptionally bought the painted version, (which I hardly ever do), was because my Grandfather was a driver of the lead horse during WW1. He was seriously injured in his head by shrapnel early on in the conflict - I guess because they hadn't issued steel helmets at that period. My Britains version is of them in their full dress - so I have always meant to make one up - but give them all STEEL HELMETS!!! I'm sure Grandad would approve!

I never met my Grandad - as he died of his injuries before I was born. I remember that my Dad (Royal Navy) was annoyed that my Grandma gave away Grandad's spurs and sabre whilst he was at sea. If she hadn't, I'm pretty sure they would be above my fireplace now.

Ho-hum - such is life. Thanks for thinking of me though chum. johnnybach

Fusilier Miniatures also make a Napoleonic version of the RHA if the King's Troop doesn't take your fancy.

Hi Jeff - yes it does actually. I'm afraid that when it comes to toy soldiers, I'm a bit like a kid in a sweet-shop. I want them ALL!

I DO like the Tarleton helmets - always have - and I will have them some day. Unfortunately. the Commandante and I don't always share the same views. She (who must be obeyed) likes to do silly things like visiting Grandchildren in NZ - going out to eat now and then - and buying unecessary stuff for patchwork quilting etcetera, so I have to tread a fine line between purchasing absolute necessities (like a Mounties Band) and the above stuff!

So...........thanks for showing me yet more goodies. I WILL have them.......one day!

Good idea this internet lark.............innit? johnnybach

P.S I just checked - and the Napoleonic RHA gun team is not in their Napoleonic range any more. I s'pose I could always ask?

Has to be this from last year for me, absolute beauty.

Whoa! there my beauty!

That's a bit odd - two different lists. Don't they want you to buy them then? I seriously don't understand that? Do you mean that there are TWO lists - and when you access one - you can't find out about the other one with more products on it? Can't help wondering - Why??? Nice to know though. Thanks Jeff, there's some nice stuff there. Yet another good reason for being in the forum. johnnybach

Tommy Atkins was the original firm, a few years ago they purchased Fusilier Miniatures and so they keep the two listed seperately so that followers of either line don't get confused. Trooper

Well trooper - okay - it's historical then - but I still don't really understand why these lines don't show up. For example, I bung in "Fusilier Miniatures" to the magic machine here - and up it comes. When I'm there I can access three lines:
Fusilier
Hussar
Tommy Atkins

The products I was looking at after being given the new website didn't show up on any of the three lines above.

Whatever! - I s'pose its up to the Company to sort out its own arrangements. I like the people there - they do the biz - but can't help thinking that they may be losing out on selling stuff. I was in Marketing - once upon a time - and this is an example of a firm that has grown - and not kept pace with presentation of ALL of their products in one place. BUT - not my business to tell 'em that.

Thanks for advising to both of you. I will keep the alternative website details on file. regards-johnnybach

Thats a really nice looking set. Lucky man
Mitch
Indeed, Mitch. I had several of the Marx sets as a kid with several multiples of the ACW and Battleground sets. All I have left are the various figures with very little of the accessories such as the tanks, houses, bunkers, etc. They just got broken or lost over the years as they saw very heavy and continued action.:( Many happy memories and a life long addiction are the result.;) -- Al

For me, it was stumbling across an eBay seller, selling for his friend a collection of figures by the German maker Rylit. They're from the Seven Years War, in really nicely animated poses. Along with the poses, there are figures of Austrians, who aren't as well-represented as the Prussians are. I'm working through painting them now.

You may recall this one, a Prussian dragoon:

and this Prussian fusilier:

and this musketeer, enjoying his lunch:

That's the "original" paint job, I've since stripped the paint and am modifying some minor details on the figure.

Prost!
