First Legions Releases (1 Viewer)

I remember Figarti, Rick was a fine man and gentleman, i think that our hobby lost a great collector/ manufacturer
When he got out of the hobby...

Before I shell out for a new series I want some idea as to where it is going. My preference is for the two sides of a conflict to be represented, multiple sculpts and different regiments or uniforms.
For example I started collecting the FL Landsknechts for the Battle of Pavia based on their plans for French and Swiss down the road. Same with Alexander and the Macedonians knowing
that Persians were forthcoming. I don't hold the manufacturer to a definitive release timeline but it would be nice to have an estimate. It does help financial and space planning.

JJD just announced their AWI Saratoga Series with a brochure that shows the forthcoming releases. Having a good understanding of where this is going and the costs I can plan accordingly.
I know there are times when makers start a new series and due to low sales they may discontinue, cut back or push out deliveries. Fortunately in many cases we have other competitors that
fill the void or we can be creative and customize certain figures.
For JJD's WOR series there was ample notice as what was in the works and even though there are some delays due to factory issues patience will pay off. Showing prototypes at the shows
really helps predicting what will come and how much it will cost you.
Frankly I have rarely been disappointed with my choices of which series to collect. And since I collect multiple series I can usually feed my addiction on a monthly basis.

I don’t see it the same way. I also don’t quite understand where “going” means.

I purchased the Wild West figures even though it wasn’t clear what the range was to be about in specific terms. I just liked the figures. Same thing with the Vietnam range. It wasn’t clear to me — and still isn’t— how the range might develop, and that is fine. I purchased the Mouseketeers vignette not knowing if we’d see any more figures.

For those who might want to develop large battle scenes that might be an issue but for people who have space and financial limitations, which is many of us, that’s probably not an issue. I’m happy to have a few figures to illustrate a time period.

Just my personal preference....I like dioramas with lots of figures. I rarely buy "one offs" but will on occasion buy a figure just because the quality is outstanding. I want to tell a story with my figures and I love reading about a battle and then trying to recreate it in whole or part (in a smaller ratio obviously).
I know that other collectors like yourself have other preferences or strategies so that's fine but I want to know where the series is going in terms of completing a scene/diorama before I go all in.

.. Just an example of where is it going. Would be having a town. That you can build around. Pick and choose how its going to look. With me it is the centerpiece that needs to be done first (mine would be the 92nd Gordon standard bearer, now that I have it. I am starting to buy some other pieces. Without the Standard, I consider the line dead, I may accidentally glance at it. But would never buy any piece from the collection)

You can do that because you have the space and the werewithal to do that. Not everyone is in that boat. I believe less is more. I don’t believe you need every figure made by a manufacturer; a few will do quite nicely. I follow that approach in music too and I have an extensive jazz collection. A person I know has 90 plus recordings by John Coltrane alone. I have about 20 and that’s sufficient.

Both collecting methods are equally valid IMO.....I sometimes collect pieces that i like without expanding into a full series which maybe un-affordable for me.......I did that with FL Crusaders, Romans.and Vietnam....A limited number of figures 10 or so were purchased for these ranges............However (for example WWII) I also tend to like to know where a series might be going..:rolleyes2:.. or developed... before I get serious and dive head long into it....Otherwise my collection risks becomes nothing more then a mish mosh of many unrelated things and lacks cohesion

Strange post, have followed it, but it is very off point, I am not a big collector of FL, only Napoleonic retreat from Moscow, but there seems to be a steady stream of releases, would like the Battle of the Bulge sets, but just way too expensive for me, personal opinion, when you consider what other sets I can get from companies like TG and JJD in other eras I collect.

... Off point?.. I also collect TG, K&C , TCS, and whatever peaks my interest. But if I am looking for a centerpiece. I go for First Legion for single pieces, and KC for Armour. I agree that FL can get expensive but it is worth the price.. And as A broken record sounds I like knowing where a particular range is going. However beautiful a piece is, I will not delve in it, unless there is the support of future pieces, and knowing what the next year will bring..the only time that I broke that rule is with the Winged lancers.
Andy (KC), On the times that I have seen him at Sierra, has never been afraid to show catalogues of future ranges/ or answer questions about where a particular range is going.... So I can plan and choose which ones to buy, in the here and now, and the future...
Best example of this is the 92nd Gordon Highlanders, I consider it as perfect as I can ever wish for. But without the Standard Bearer. I considered it a dead line, not worth investing in.. I finally got a Standard Bearer from minutemen toys, thanks again George!!. It cost more than a pretty penny.. But more than worth it. In my opinion. And delving now into that line...
And I agree with what you said Frank.

Glad I could help you out, must be nice to finally get that elusive piece, best of luck to you in your future collecting, I've got my ear to the ground for you regarding the drummer as well.

Thanks again for your support.
