You call it a DYI store. Stay away from the white foam. The Pink is best here in the US. The Blue will work and is cheaper but not as strong as the Pink.
A Hot knife foam cutter would be a good investment if you plan on more than one Diorama.
Keep us posted on your work and Happy New Year

The pink stuff is a polystyrene product that you can get in large sheets, it's sometimes used as wall insulation.

Scott,

For some reason, this stuff seems to be very difficult to get hold of in the UK. None of the usual DIY stores (B&Q, Homebase etc) seem to stock it. The only place I found is an online store:

www.modelshop.co.uk

Go in to their catalogue - Raw Materials - Foam

The pink and blue foam that you need is towards the bottom of that page (I've had both from them, can't seem to see any great difference in product or price).

They should have the range of sizes and diameters to suit your needs. I think it's a standard £5 delivery wherever in the UK.

Hope that helps.

Simon

Watch what kind of glue you use. I use Liquid nails or plain White Glue.
Test what what you use some will melt your foam and make a big mess.
I seal my foam with a water base paint others on this forum may have better ideas.

Some modeling outfits sell a special foam glue. Also, the home improvement stores sell foam glue in a caulking tube. I have used both and both work fine for sealing the foam pieces together. I use small nails to hold the foam together, as these glues take awhile to cure. Creates a solid bond.....Michael

And for goodness sake, do not use spray paint. It will melt your hard work in a heart beat.

Has anyone tried hot glue, those guns are cheap these days.

The hot glue works great and because it the heat bonds them together well and it only takes 3 - 5 seconds. I've used foam glues but it takes forever especially if you have everything precut and don't want to wait.

Thanks Alex, I think I would use hot glue if I was making dios out of polystyrene foam. I have tried to glue it before with various types of glues that you dispense with caulking guns and it doesn't seem to hold very well and takes ages to set.

I recently bought a $20.00 hot glue gun and have been using it on foam projects. It works real well and makes the project move along a lot quicker. The only thing I don't like is the thin glue strands from it. I use a tweezer to remove them. Make sure the glue is not too hot or it will melt the foam. The expensive glue guns have settings on them....
That's the story of my hot glue gun. The End. LOL

I made these with my hot glue gun.......Nick

I think they may be a tad tall for shelf backdrops :)

Hey O.D., this creation of mine is not intended as a shelf backdrop. I will finish my 18"Lx10"Hx2"D shelf backdrop in a couple of days. I will post it asap.

Very nice builings. The hard part is trying to please all scales, if you are producing a mass market product. I would think that making a building in 1/32 scale would be ok, in order to satisfy everyone, 1/35, 1/32, 1/30.......I would probably use it for my 28mm Warhammer gaming, since those guys are not so frantic over exact size.........Michael
