When I saw the many replies I expected a lot of people to freak out about my comment. It's good to see in which direction the discussion went.

Hey Uthred your people fought in Italy? I suppose I can't stand you anymore because they probably shot my grand dad. ;) Just a joke. He returned and the bullet just went through his arm. I know that a lot of nations fought around Monte Casino but I didn't know about Bazilians in Italy. Interesting fact.

Even more striking is the amount of German descendants. I know that some people of the Graf Spee stayed in South America, the crew of a submarine went there after the war was over and a lot of nazis flew over the Rat Line but 4.5 million! That could mean Uthred and me are related. ;)

As I'm sure Uthred will tell you, most Brazilians of German descent, migrated there well before World War II. Brasil has a sizable population of Brasilians of Japanese descent, again all there well before WW II.
 
Nope no problem displaying the Swastika,especially when its on the wrong end of an Allied Bombardment or a visit from the RAF;)

As an interesting fact-you-didn't-need-to-know, the American flying ace of WW1, Raoul Lufbery, carried a red swastika on his Spad fighter aircraft. It was a good-luck talisman with American indian origins. -- lancer
 
The swastika was first used in German politics by the Thule Society, founded towards the end of WWI, which was an anti-semitic Pan-German sect. The swastika denoted its racial priorities and was named after the location of supposed home of Aryan purity, Iceland. The German Workers Party, founded by Anton Drexler, later the Nazi Party, was created by the Thule Society. Hence, the origins of the use of the swastika.

There's no need to be embarrased. On your next vacations take a plane to Brazil, a HUGE country with lots of beaches, tropical rain forests in the north and european-style wineyards in the south!

I talked to this nice couple from New Zealand on the airplane the other day and I was giving them advice of what to do and what not to do in Brazil. Brazil is very safe, unlike some foreigners think, but it's not safe in every neigborhood (just like in the USA, right?).

I will create a thread about visiting Brazil on the Miscelanous area for those interested on it.

Now, The Boys From Brazil, amazingly, is based on real life! Dr. Mengele did work in a small town of mostly Germans in Rio Grande do Sul as a doctor. This small town, Candido Godoi, has today the highest rate of twins in the world!!!!! People say around here it's his work, trying to create a 4th Reich in Brazil...

Knowing Dr. Mengele had a particular interest in twins, to double Germany's population, and knowing he lived in Candido Godoi where he conduted experiments, makes one wonders what the heck happened there... the real funny thing is that all those twins were born after 1947, the year Dr Mengele arrived in Candido Godoi!

Sorry about your grand dad. But my grand dad was too old to go to the war (over 40) and my father was just 8 in 1945, so rest assured whoever shot him was not related to me!

The Germans started ariving in Rio Grande do Sul in 1824, by the time Brazil went to the battlefields of Italy (1944), there were almost a million people of German descent in Brazil! They were the translators of the Brazilian armed forces during the war, really, fighting against Germany.

I am a mix of Italian (there are many oriundi in Brazil) and Portuguese, with some other contributions along the way.

That's true. The largest Japanese population outside Japan is in Brazil.

We had it all, Germans, Japanese and Italians (like myself), all in great numbers around here. That we fought against the Axis in Italy shows our disposition against nazism, I guess.

Uthred you can be very proud of the role your country took in WW2,it was many countries coming together that defeated the scourge of the Nazi's and lifted the black cloud hanging over the world.

On top of this your female football fans are gorgeous;):D

I am very proud, Rob. Proud of helping to put an end to a horrific period in history. The photo shows the Brazilian war cemetery in Pistoia, Italy, as it looked in 1945:

Today there's a beautiful monument there, but the bodies were brought back to Brazil, to rest here close to their loved ones. I salute them and every man, woman and child that died for freedom. They died for a good cause.

Nor I, whether it's on a scale model or on an accessory to be used along with miniature figurines.
Although in Asia, where it's an ancient symbol, it's a mirror image of the one that automatically springs to mind.
