Forthcoming ACW (1 Viewer)

Right here we go!.First i am just an interested Brit starting to learn about the ACW,and as such have no opinion either way.But at the risk of starting ACW2 i have a question. For those of you from the south and who support the south if you had won the ACW would you be happy today with the U.S split into two different countries.?And the question that is very delicate/difficult to answer whats your stance on the slavery question?.Can you support the south and still be against slavery?.Hope you don't mind me asking but as i say am just getting into it and am fascinated.

Rob,

Firstly the CSA never really had a chance without recognition from the European powers, and even then it would have been close.

If the US had split into two different nations, the whole world would have been a pretty different place by now.

I would have thought that the CSA would have been allied with us and the French and the USA, would have been well - I don't know - we weren't allies in the 1860s. Slavery would have died out in the south (Britain being against slavery) and they would have then invested in heavy industry (Brits probably trying to make a shilling or two). Then history would have changed dramatically, who knows where WWI, WWII (if it had started) and the Cold War (WWIII) would have led.

An "Iron Curtain" between the two countries?

Maybe an American War in the late C19th or early C20th?

An interesting subject - but glad we never going to find out - the Americans aren't a bad bunch.:p

Personally, I'll be interested if the K&C figures can fit in with my Conte and Britains.

Best Wishes

Andy

Modern history has been subverted to say the civil war was fought over slavery. This is not strictly the case. The civil war was fought over states rights, the southern states were opposed to a strong central goverment controlled by the industrial north east. The goverment was assured of being pro northern because of the population difference between the industrial north and rural south. When southern politicians tried to get slaves counted as population the northern politicians strongly opposed this measure and it was defeated. Also if the war was about slavery why did it take until 1863 for slavery to be abolished and then only in the south? The emancipation proclamation finally freed all slaves not just southern ones. Slavery was the issued that started the fire but was not the main fuel. So I am like General Lee he opposed slavery but fought for the south. General U.S. Grant was a slave owner (his wife's familiy) and fought for the North. If we were two countries I don't believe we would ever be as strong as we have been. If this had been true the Germans would have tried to influence the south to threaten the north to keep America out of the war or vice a versa. So I am happy the way things turned out in the long run. United States Forever!!!!!!!

See thats very interesting.I didn't know Lee, the souths most famous commander was against slavery.I do appreciate your views as its enlightening to hear what Americans think.I also didn't know until recently that at first Lincoln said the war was about keeping the union and not the slavery issue. And did in fact order that slaves escaping to the north be returned to where they came. And it was in fact Ben Butler who allowed them to stay in the north as paid labourers. It is hard to imagine what is now the U.S.A as two different countries.I am loving the Ken Burns series so much!

Rob

Its very good - a little wrong on a coupe of historic facts - but, by in large on the money.

Great stuff for the period.

I can't speak for the South, but those of us in the states that voted against "W" wish we could contact the re-enactors and tell them we will declare the South the winner and grant them their independence if they promise to take Washington D.C. and all the politicians with them.

But then we get John Kerry. Yikes.

Louis I will accept your offer as long as we can declare an open hunting season on politicians, no bag limit, and sell out of country licenses. All the northern people coming in for the season, we will be rich.:)
