My 5 months here on the forum has been an interesting, entertaining, and some times amusing one. Many times great information is shared. Other times great photos of some really outstanding dioramas are shown. advise has even been exchanged on varios issues. The one thing that stands out to me though is I am feeling a lot of tension here on the forum when conversations are exchanged about our beloved collectibles. It is almost not worth the effort to start a new thread on a topic as many times the outcome results in frustration for many. I think I will just abide by a new simple rule. Post a picture, view and comment on a picture and leave it at that. Many of (not all) of the opinionated participants here do not take the time themselves to post a new thread, or generate a topic for conversation but simply lash out at those who do. Especially if the opinion or statement given is different from that of themselves. A forum can get very drab if valid talking points are not brought up and addressed. Just something to think about.

I don't think you should stop posting new threads PA, feelings are running high about prices at the moment , but it will soon settle down again. Some people love K&C products and some have their own issues with them and this mix can lead to a volatile forum for a while, don't let it put you off.

Its called differing opinions and, thats what a forum is all about there are continuing tensions on this and probably every forum so, its not just about price etc being what has caused it. Historical debates are more heated than whats going on with the toy soldiers.

Post what you want don't post what you don't want may be the next forum mantra

I have been here since the beginning, well almost the beginning: one day after this Forum was formed in April 2005, and I have seen it all.

There's always one argument or another, then things settle down, then heat up, then settle down and so forth.

What I have found, however, is that this is usually confined to World War II and K & C, for the most part. This is only part of the Forum, albeit a big part, but not the only part and none of this goes on in the glossy sections, Chat Lounge, etc.

As Mitch said this is a place for discussion, good and bad, so "just keep on truckin!"

Yes Rob, you are right. Many collectors are tense about pricing now. The "calm" should soon return. :smile2:

You know, it's been that way from the beginning and that has never ceased. Call me naive, but I can never figure out why.

I am with you 100% Brad, it seems to me that virtually any thread eventually declines into K&C versus FL, Figarti etc. If contributors want to moan about K&C's prices, policies, inside leg measurements or choice of diet PLEASE post them on K&C's section and leave room for others to enjoy the hobby in general. I would move this discussion if I thought it was going to go the route of K&C vs everything but for now it hasnt gotten out of control so I will leave it here. I wish we could get more of the Glossy and other type collectors to chime in on this sort of discussion but I cant see a way to induce their interaction. I think a lot of them see how discussions go in the matte areas and dont want to get involved in that sort of mess. So for now let hope some of them are reading this thread and will jump in.

Like Brad I have been here since the beginning and was initially the lone voice of Britains and glossy collections so I can tell you that it has been interesting to say the least. So Panzer I say lets just continue to have discussions here and there and try to keep the infighting out of it afterall there are a lot of other areas besides WWII to discuss out there.

I think you will find that most of these other types of collectors confine their comments to the appropriate sections unlike the K&C afficionados who spread themselves everywhere. If you want to get them involved then widen the discussion to include other makers. Sure, K&C and the others make some great products but they only represent a small proportion of what is available out there and what they do have available has a limited shelf life. They are often refered to as the "big" companies, but if you judge a firm by the quantity of figures that are AVAILABLE then they are in the minor league compared with companies like Tradition, Little Legion, Asset and ATS who never retire their products. They don't have to as all the production is under their own personal control and not contracted out to the other side of the world. They don't have to lay out vast sums of money transporting their goods by container and laying themselves open to the whims of a foreign contractor or the vagaries of the shipping companies. Similarly they don't have to produce a set number of pieces prior to sales, the moulds can sit there until needed and then produce only what is needed at the time. It is a fact that all these companies are still selling figures that were first produced ten or fifteen years ago, no panic buying to get in before the item is sold out. ATS has the largest and most varied selection of Napoleonic figures on the market today, Little Legion has the largest range of Zulu War. So, just for once, let's hear it for the "little" companies. Hi Trooper,

I totally agree with you on what makes a company big or small. I have figures from a wide variety of companies many you named as well as ones I found while wandering the South Seas on my honeymoon. I have some super figures from South Seas Soldiers and Imperial as well as a very small shop I found in Sydney. The main appeal for me was they were unique to the region subject matterwise and they were also lovely glossy figures! My only regret was not getting more of them. Of course I can hope to get back down that way and find more of them someday.
Over here in Europe I have been wandering the cities with my eyes open in search of more soldiers and I have been pleased to find a lot in the past few trips. CBG, Quairilu, Elastolyn and others are among the finds and I could not be happiers. I also found some really well executed matte figures from the Austro-Hungarian Empire that were done by a cottage maker out of Croatia who unfortunately I have not been able to discover his name. Perhaps I will later this year when I revisit the shop where he sold his last batch of figures. All I can say is I have been totally enjoying the hunt and have not been hunting for any one maker but have been focused on finding whatever is out there. Because for me thats what makes this hobby so much fun. I am afraid some of our friends may have lost that aspect of fun in the matte world...

One smaller company I really regret have gone out of business are Toy Army Workshop, I have a nice collection of their sets and am now trying to decide to either add some Tommy Atkins along side it, or sell it altogether and help pay for our holiday next year. It was TAW that I used to visit the London show for, until I discovered....oops...don't want to upset Sir Alan...another company!:wink2:^&grin

hi Rob,

TAW were some of the best around. I also love the Tommy Atkins sets they had some great figures for a lot of off the beaten path subjects. Another maker that you reminded me of was Errol John, I love this company but talk about scarce in the States. Hens teeth are an easier find. {sm4} Still they are some magical figures IMO and I really enjoy looking for them as well.

I agree with you about TAW, Rob, it grieves me that Father Greg has all the masters and now appears to have abandoned the business without putting them back on the market. I suggest you take a look at Yeomanry Miniatures who is now gradually moving into WW1. His first venture is the staff car recently seen at the London show and he has some foot figures on the way. Some of his other products include horse drawn pompoms and machine guns of the Boer War period and all his figures are compatible with TAW. Incidently you haven't upset me, but the Morris dancer is coming nearer, just got to figure a way to paint sequins....Trooper
