The circle was the 1st Corp Insignia and the color denoted the division within the Corps as 6th WI stated. Red was 1st Div, White/2nd Div, Blue/3rd Div. The Iron Brigade took great pride in saying that they were 1st Brigade, 1st Div, 1st Corps. A completely "dressed" Hardee (black) hat at the time of Gettysburg would have had a Red Circle cloth patch with a brass letter pinned through it to signify Company. Below that would have been a brass French Horn infantry insignia. A sky blue cord would have been around the head band. The left side would have been pinned up with a brass National plate. Of course this was "full dress" and the rigors of campaign would have allowed a variety of combinations of how the Hardee was adorned.

These look great, I'm looking in the mail for mine. What is the red circle on some of the Hardee Hats? Is that a Corps Insignia?
