I was chatting with Chuck Harris yesterday evening, and he told me a very interesting story about foxholes, and made what I thought was an excellent suggestion for King & Country.
Chuck mentioned the old axiom that the most important piece of equipment for an infantryman is his shovel. You have to dig to survive in combat. In fact, according to Chuck, men in his unit would either obtain a post-hole digger or have combat engineers create a makeshift one from two of the standard issue shovels in order to employ an important lifesaving technique tought to him by a wise old sergeant: in every foxhole, they would angle the floor down and at the deepest point dig a deep post hole. Any grenades landing in the foxhole would roll down into the deep post hole and would explode harmlessly straight up rather than killing Chuck and his mates. This makes sense, as physics dictates that an explosion follows the line of least resistance (in this case straight up).
Which brings us to Chuck's idea: When Andy makes the modular diorama bases, he should make some with foxholes and slit trenches, and he should make some figures of infantrymen digging-in to use with these fox holes. Andy made me a custom Normandy bocage hedgerow diorama with foxholes and slit trenches, and I think the diorama is one of his best. I think Chuck's idea would reaally add to the realism of the modular diorama bases. I guess we'll all have to wait and see what Andy has in store for us.
