I have a set of WWI aces and am looking for some info.
I believe the set was titled the "Flying Circus" and containes 6 standing figures. The set was produced around 1984 and is one of the first sets that Frontline made.
The set figures were the German Aces from Jasta 11 which was Ritchtofen's first command.
I am looking for a possible Pic of this set. The names of the aces depicted. The offical title and set number and info as to the early Frontline figures having "Made in Hong Kong" stickers on the bases.
Thanks for the help.

Dear Chuck,

Set Number: PS1
Official Title: "Air Aces"
List Price: US$79

According to an old Frontline price list, the following aces were depicted: Richenbaker, Bromowski, Ball, Ronck, Richtofen, and Skuikov.

This set was part of Frontline's "World War 1 Personality Sets," which had only one other set: PS2 or "Generals" which depicted Pershing, Joseph, Haig, Foch, Hindenburg, and Brinken.:)

Thanks for the info Steven.

I think that this set must be something different. These figures appear to be all German. Does the set # PC3 mean anything? Is there even a Frontline set with this number?
The seller indicated that the set was by Frontline but he could be mistaken. Also was it common for early Frontline figures to be marked with a made in Hong Kong sticker?
It a shame that there was no box with them. :(

Skeeterbuck,

Can you post some photos. I know this is a long shot but I'm wondering if you have some old K & C figures. They did make a few of those.

This is not the best photo so take a look at page 5 of the 1995 Warbirds brochure.

Brad, I try and get a pic of them later today.

They are NOT like the K&C figures that you linked to in your post.

Chuck

Chuck,

Did you look at the Hobbybunker site. They have a pretty comprehensive listing of the aces.

Yes Brad, I did. I even did a search on the net to see if any info came up which it didn't. :(

Dear Chuck,

I spent more time looking at my old Frontline price lists and found that there was a PS3 or "German Pilots" set that was listed as discontinued in 1997. Unfortunately, the price list does not list the name of the pilots. This set was not listed in my price list from the 80's. It appears that you have this set and that it was produced in the early 90's.:)

Hi Steven,

Yes, that seems correct. On the bottom of two of the figures there is a small hand written sticker. One says "PS3" and the other says "Flying Circus". It would seem that the figures were modeled after a photo of the aces as they are all slightly different poses.
One of the figures has his right hand inside this flying coat. I believe that this is maybe Kurt Wolff. He was a pilot that flew with the Red Baron and was KIA flying Fokker F.1 102/17 which was the first Fokker Triplane that the Manfred von Richthofen received.

Lt. Wolff is the pilot standing on the right end in the pic link.

I took a photo of the figures. If someone can post the pic, send me your emaill and I will forward the image to you. Thanks!

Chuck

Here are the pilots via Chuck. Never seen these before.

Thanks again Brad for posting the pic.

I purchased these at the Gettysburg show without a box. IIRC when Frontline originally made these figures they indicated which pilots they represented.
I have sent an email to Gerard at Frontline in Hong Kong. I'm hoping he will be able to provide their names. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :)

Anyone having any additional info please let me know.

Steven...Can you tell me what was the original price for this set?

Hi,
I have to dig out my frontline aces, I think I have this set too, I saw this at the show and it looked familar. I have the Generals and I think this one.

Tom

The figures, from Jazzeum's post, look to be, from left; Wolfe, Schafer, Festner, Lothar von R., ? , Manfred von R. JMO, based on poses, stature. Can't venture a guess on #5. Anyone else care to guess? -- lancer

lancer, I think that you are spot on with the 5th figure over being possibly Esser. Of all the other pilots in Jasta 11 at Roucourt in April of 1917 (Bloody April) he appears to be the only other rather tall pilot.

The others were Allmenroder, Hintsch, Simon, Brauneck and Krefft.

Manfred, Lothar, Wolff, Schafer & Allmenroder would all go on to win the Orden Pour le Merite (Blue Max). Quite impressive to say the least. ;)

That sounds great Tom. :)

I hope there is something that came with the set to ID the figures to the pilots they are suppose to represent.

Here is the email I received for Gerald at Frontline for info on this set.

Hi Chuck,

You've found a real old set, late 1980's I would say.

It was called Richthofens Flying Circus, and had himself, his brother and 4
others, one of whom was Kurt Wolff. Others were named but sorry I seemed to
lost names, if I can dig up paper copy I'll get in tough.

Hope you enjoy our figures.

Regards,

Gerard Prime

Esser is a good possibility. The Red Baron was an outstanding leader and would get the best people possible around him. If a pilot didn't measure up, he found himself on a stage out of Dodge. It is not stretching things to say that Jasta 11 were the best of the best. -- lancer

Guess I should have bought these at the show, i can only located PS1 and PS2 in my collection, not this last one! Ok, another quest is on!
