Hi Guys,

Well I finally was able to get my hands on a pair of Garibaldi Glossy sets from the mid 1980s. They are very nice to say the least! I am hoping that someone else out here has some and or some more information on the company. The sets I picked up are The Kingdom of Peidmont Grenadier Band and set of marching Peidmont Grenadiers from the Crimean War. I will post some photos when I get a chance but it may be a few days.

So anyone else out there collect Garibaldi? I have know of them for a long time but until these two came up on ebay I hadnt seen any. So naturally I picked them up. Well I hope there are a few of you who know some of the history of this company and perhaps where I can look for more of them.

All the best

Dave

Hi Dave - heard of them - and seen some photos - very toylike. I belieeve Bruntons Barracks (USA) sell some. Their website says Garibaldi - Italian company (no surprises there then!) went out of business in 2004. Try looking there for some more - perhaps? jb

Hi Johnny

Thanks for the tip I will take a look and see what they have. I will also try to post photos soon.

1. Very large set -- Roman Galley with full Crew (ship is wood).

2. Last of the Mohicans Set.

Nice soldiers!

Hi Tom,

If you ever get a chance to take some photos of those sets I would really enjoy seeing them! The Galley sounds really amazing. I am currently hunting for a set of his Swiss Guard for the Vatican. I will be in Italy this summer so I hope to locate some...

Dave,
The ship I have out at the moment so will get photos! I also love that Swiss Guard set and just missed one in the last few months!

All the best and good luck, I will get photos!

I have just one Garibaldi figure, a French officer circa 1740. John's right, they are very toylike, especially compared to other figures produced at the same time.

I think there was an article on them in Toy Soldier & Model Figure in a much earlier number, I'll have to see if I can find it.

Prost!

Hi Dave,

I didn't collect Garibaldi, because they were just a little too toylike for my tastes; but from a historical perspective, I have always been interested in their figures from the Italian War of Independence, the Austrian Army, and the Kingdom of Two Sicilies. I found an old, first quarter of 1994, list from Brunton's Barracks in which they note that they have just picked up the line. I remember seeing Pam's Garibaldi sets at both the West Coaster and Chicago, years ago. You might be interested in knowing that set CRB 1 Piedmont Band (12 pcs) had a list price of $143. There are no Piedmont Grenadiers on that list, but four piece sets of Crimean War Bersaglieri marching or advancing are listed at $45. I also met Garibaldi's owner and wife, Luigi and Monica Toiati, years ago in Chicago. They were based in Rome at Via Del Gesu 57.

Tom,

Lucky you! The RO 8 set ROMAN GALLEY AND CREW listed for $550 on Brunton's Barracks 1994 list. I don't see the Last of the Mohcans listed.

The Brunton's Barracks list has six different Garibaldi lines: Roman Imperial Army, Celts and Britons, French and Indian Wars 1754-1763, Crimean and Italian Independence Wars, Austrian Army, and Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.

As an example, here are the sets listed under Austrian Army. It appears that Garibaldi's sets originally had four figures because there is a note saying that they are out of production and limited to stock on hand. The newer sets had six figures. You can also see that Brunton's did not carry all of the sets in the line.

A 4 Standard Bearer of the Line Infantry $ 20
A 9 Band of the Line Infantry - 12 pcs $143
A 10 Gun Boat and Crew $143
A11C Artillery Rocket Section - 5 + Rocket Launcher $94
AUS 1 Line Infantry - Officer + 3 $45
AUS 3 Grenadiers - Officer + 3 at Attention $45
AUS 6 Jaegers - Officer + 3 at Attention $45
AUS 18 Sailors in Blue - Officer + 3 $45

Boy, I would love to see that gun boat set.

Here are the sets from the Kingdom of Two Sicilies line on the Brunton's 1994 list.

K 1B Line Infantry - Officer, Pioneer + 2 Troopers $45
K 3 Swiss Infantry - Officer + 3 Troopers $45
K 7 Line Infantry Standard $20
K 8A Chasseurs - Officer + 3 at Ready $45
K 9 Chasseurs - Officer + Bugler + 4 Privates $69

Ok, here are 2 pics, not fully set up but gives you the idea. It is a lot of wood, handmade. I have a crew of 16, but I think there were 24 total. I am missing 2 sets fo 4. Enjoy!

An educated guess would be from the Garibaldi War of Independance period based on their uniforms. The don't appear to be from the Crimean War.

Hi Guys,

Well thats what I thought as well and I asked the seller what the set was called. It is basicly an captured Austrian Gun with Italian Crew. No set number listed. So I also think it is from the Garibaldi War for Independance. Still, I like it and am watching it.

Just saw this set of WWII Italians in North Africa on eBay today. The asking price, with original box, is $79.

I spotted this little 5 piece set called "Swiss Oath" recently on a quite well known Auction site - so thought devotees of the brand might like to see a pic. Quite nice. jb
