Will have to check it out. Just recently watched Downfall and found it very good. BTW, one reason Hitler chose not to use poison gas was he knew the Allies would retaliate and a lot of the German army transport depended on horses, which of course would then have been eliminated. One of the more interesting points from the Longerich book is that Goebbles played almost no role in any of the major decisions that took place after Hitler came to power. He was mostly kept out of the loop until after decisions were made with the task of spinning those decision in the most favorable manner. He was the primary proponent of "total war" toward the end but even in that regard, Hitler largely ignored his advice. For some reason, Hitler was reluctant to promote the use of women in the labor force, close recreational facilities such as movie theatres and restaurants, or use stockpiles of poisonous gas against the allies. The Nazis operated in a strange form of fantasy denial toward the end. Although a fanatic, Goebbles was one of the few who assessed the situation in a realistic manner.
There are some theories that suggest because Hitler was gassed during WWI that he was reluctant to use gas but given the atrocities that he did commit that is hard to reconcile. At the very least, given that there was nothing to lose toward the very end with the Russians closing in on Berlin, it is somewhat inexplicable to me why Hitler did not authorize the use of stockpiles of poisonous gas. I've never read a satisfactory explanation as to why the Nazis manufactured but refused to use the available stockpile of gas when there was nothing left to lose. The Nazis appeared to be living in some type of alternative reality toward the end of the war. They were apparently surprised when the Russians began shelling Berlin as though they didn't know the Russians were closing in on them. Will have to check it out.
