Hi guys,
A lot of movie fans here and I thought it would be interesting to have a thread about great movie music and the scenes you associate with the music.
It is the combination I am talking about.

I could name plenty but I will start off with :
The Longest Day theme as dawn comes.
The Magnificent Seven theme
Black Hawk Down where the helicopters are heading into Mogadishu
and the theme from Where Eagles Dare.

There are many others I can think of and two more involve helicopters but I will leave them for others to name.

Regards
Brett

Great Escape,Dam Busters,633 Squadron and Band of Brothers all spring to mind. Also the Spagetti Westerns all had cool theme tunes for various scenes, including i think the final shootout scene in the Good the Bad and the Ugly.

It would be hard not to associate "The Shawshank Redemption" with it's outstanding score. IMO "The Thin Red Line" has the best score ever put to a war movie. Like the movie or not, listen to the score and you won't be disappointed. -- lancer

The theme from Gettysburg when the Confederates are lineing up for Picketts charge.

Soundtracks are often ignored when it comes to movie evaluations but imo they can make or break a movie and imo must count for at least one third of any movie success.

I'm sue I've mention before that the PREDATOR movie is one of my all time favorites and so is the soundtrack with Little Richards Long Tall Sally as much a 'chopper tune' as Ride of the Valkyries imo. I couldn't find a decent video on the web as Little Richards copyright team must be working overtime but here's a link that HALO fans may find amusing:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xa1e4V21J-8

"The Godfather". The soundtrack is perfect, from the main theme and love theme, to the songs that were included as part of the action (eg, the wedding scene, for one). That goes for the sequel, too.

Soundtrack from "The Last of the Mohicans". One of the best ever composed...

And pretty much any movie that John Williams scored. "Star Wars" comes to mind, especially; he approached it like an opera. "Superman", and "Jaws" as well (except for the scene in "Jaws" when Quint first puts two barrels on the shark, and he takes off. The music turns to a sprightly, pleasant theme, which I've always found to be incongruous with the action).

Some of my other favorites:

"The Battle of the Bulge", where Hessler reviews his young commanders, and they sing the Panzerlied.

"Kelly's Heroes", with its main theme, which also crops up in the scene where the group is resting after their first breakthrough. Cowboy or someone else plays "Burning Bridges" on the harmonica.

"The Outlaw Josey Wales"

All three of Sergio Leone's spaghetti Westerns

"The Magnificent Seven"

"Radio Days", where the music was an integral part of the story. Plus, it's a funny movie ("You speak the truth, my faithful Indian companion." "I am a rabbi, you call me 'fait'ful Indian companion?!")

Prost!

Maurice Jarre and his consistently fine output for such films as

Lawrence of Arabia
The Professionals
Doctor Zhivago
The Longest Day

All the above will stir ones blood with both pathos and excitement

And John Barry's haunting score for Out of Africa

Battle of Britain as a Jerry raider slams in to the drink, Goering reviewing his squadrons, Berlin at night and the desolation of London at night during the blitz.

Bridge To Far as XXX Corps storm across the bridge at Nijmegan

Last of the Mohicans - all of it - haunting, atmospheric and romantic

633 Squadron - as the Mozzies head towards their target low level over the North Sea

Dambusters - 'cos they don't make 'em like that anymore (until the next p.c. version anyway)

YES! plus "Charging Fort Wagner" by the Harlem Boys Choir in Glory.

Opening theme from Bridge At Remagen.

Opening theme from Guns of Navarone.

Before laughing at it, go listen, the score to Monsters Inc. Theres some great jazz stuff in there.

I LOVE movie music and occaisionally buy CDs to get just a few songs from movies. I can't point out very many "favorites" because I like so many for multiple reasons. Some favorite composers include;

Dmitri Tiompkin - Guns of Navarone, The Alamo, Rio Bravo, The High and the Mighty, High Noon, and many, many others

Max Steiner - A Distant Trumpet, Dark at the Top of the Stairs, The FBI Story, and many other Warner movies

Jerry Goldsmith - Patton, Tora-Tora-Tora, and so many others

Elmer Bernstein - especially his John Wayne themes, big music for a big man!

Maurice Jarre - Is Paris Burning, Grand Prix, Lawrence of Arabia

James Horner - Titanic, Field of Dreams and many other recent movies

John Williams - its easier to list his scores that I don't like than the ones I do enjoy. His music really sets a scene.

Other favorite scores include; Glory, Gettysburg, Bridge at Remagen, Battle of the Bulge, Exodus, The Sea Hawk, Morricone's Clint Eastwood westerns, Crimson Tide, Hunt for Red October, Battle of Britain, plus many others.

One piece of music and scene that go together and I have never found on a soundtrack - the "B36 Theme" from Strategic Air Command. The whole orchestration of Jimmy Stewart's first check ride in the B36 and the filming of that sequence will get me to watch the whole movie on TV just to see that again.

Quality call - watched it the other morning on Sky TV. Another one of 'em they just don't make any more!

Not a movie, but the music backing Ken Burns's "American Civil War" takes some beating.

The Music at the start of "Conan the Barbarian" gets my blood pumping.

As far as war movies go, one piece that I find truly haunting is the indigenous instrumental during the "extreme" ending of Apocalypse Now (I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't seen the film, so I won't go into detail). It's a great coda to a great movie. Depending on what copy of the movie you, have, however, the ending may be different. You can listen to the the director's commentary on the "Complete Dossier" edition (a portion of which is on YouTube) and learn why Coppola changed this scene. Unfortunately, this piece of music is not included on any of the various soundtracks that have been released over the years.
