Green Street Hooligans...

"I'm forever blowing bubbles..."

I watched this last night...a pretty good movie I thought...

I got questions...so I will differ to the Brit's on this forum...

1) These "firms"...the drinking and the "planned" fighting...do they really exist and is this an accurate rendition of them?

2) Were the teams and firms fictitious in this film?

3) Is the disdain or dislike for "Yanks" by the British football fans accurate?

Maybe your recommendation has another name...

"The Firm"...is the courtroom drama movie with Tom Cruise...not a football gang movie...

again...I'm curious...

are "Yanks" that despised in England?

Your right it is called "The Firm " & both films are worth watching ;)
I don't think the Yanks are despised in the Uk but I do know people hate the way Hollywood just show the Yank winning the war with out every having a good word to say about there Allies

It goes on mate.
Just the way the movie shows it.
Only now those English hooligans have got smart.
Plan their attacks via innocent internet forums dedicated to non football type topics.
They all give themselves cool avatars and talk in code.
So "FJ 12 for sale" actually means we are going to give the West Ham fans a good old kicking when they play Milwall.

Damian...

so Milwall and West Ham are authentic teams and firms...yes?

also are Americans kind of "frowned on" in the UK?

don't hesitate to answer frankly...

we have our own gangs here, that speak in code and hand signals...

and racist and biased views are also problematic here in the US...

your country doesn't stand alone...

Football remains a game for gentlemen played by hooligans whilst rugby remains a "Game for hooligans played by gentlemen"
When they play football the fans are kept apart by huge fences. Rugby fans from opposing teams sit next to each other share a beer and exchange a bit of banter.
That is why football was always professional as it was not played by gentlemen. Rugby was a gentleman's game so it was amateur. One did not expect to get paid for playing a game you loved.

That's interesting...what caused the violence to spill over in the football games...

is it mostly just "wild kids"...

is it really as organized as the movie makes it out to be...

There is another movie called The Firm 2009 which is based around the same aspect of hooliganism!:)

I like Americans!:DNever really met an Aussie:eek::p
Plus whenever me and my family have been to Ameirica whenever we open our mouths to talk they are fascinated with our accents and ask if we're english because they have heard english accents and we don't have any of them, so we must be some sort of mutant english hybrid!:D

So when he asks if you want something for the weekend, what do you end up with? :D

Sorry to get this thread off the subject a bit.

Anyway Michael, as I said earlier you can count on us Aussies to be your friends :D

I haven't seen the film Michael, but the fans do get violent. I looked up the teams and they are all real teams. Not so sure about the "firms" but it could be possible.

Millwall is notoriously violent or at least it was.

I have gotten more private PM's discussing this thread than I have gotten public postings...they have all been pro-American from the Brits...and other countries poster's too...

From reading the private...but candid comments from Brits...I honestly believe that the British community as a whole...accepts anybody and everybody...including us Yanks...but of course there are always exceptions to the rule...

don't fret...I'm not picking on the British exceptions...America has it's own problems...we still have small groups of people that dislike anything or anyone that is different than them...

it's not the majority by any means here...but it exists...

I do think Americans are largely perceived as ignorant, rude, loud mouthed, obnoxious, callous, overbearing, unmannered oafs almost everywhere...it's probably a "just label" in some cases too...but definitely not all by any means...

we do have an unwillingness to learn and reject anyone that can't speak our native tongue here in the States...there is a heated national debate currently regarding the influx of Mexican citizens into America...

Europe has a great linguistic and cultural diversity spread out over many neighboring countries...many Europeans speak several languages...while we here also have a large cultural diversity mixed in our country too...we expect everyone to learn our language...and I really don't see anything wrong with that if it is you intention to live here...

I think one common perception of Brits here in the US...is that they are perceived as refined, cultured and dignified...mostly by virtue of their speech...I like most Americans...am fascinated with the European accents and find them intersting...

There is also the conception of time and history...we have had a short existence here compared to Europe...with a brief history of only 500 years compared to Europe's long rich history...we are kind of an "infant" in terms of historical events and experience...

In both countries...I believe it's the very small minorities that dislike anything different...I would feel comfortable visiting England and if I were treated poorly...I would probably blame it on a rare case of "a minorities unwillingness"...the same as I would blame the poor treatment of any foreigner here...

I saw Rise of the Foot Soldier witch is based on a true story at it has some of the hooligan scene in the first half of the movie. Its an interesting and violent movie.

And on the flipside to Mikes post about Brits and other Europeans,I have always found American people open, friendly, generous and welcoming. Will never forget how when last visiting Florida my wife lost her purse with cash, credit cards, driving licence in it.(it was returned contents fully in tact by a kind gentleman in Australia). We sat next to a woman in Sea World who asked us how we were enjoying our holiday,on learning what we'd lost she offered there and then to give us money!.I was totally shocked and grateful at her kind offer and although we didn't accept the offer I will never forget such a generous offer from a complete stranger.

The special relationship between US/UK has long been held in high regard over here, and for me was very nicely summed up by Louis. He told me that the relationship is so old and close that it is a bit like two members of the same family, sometimes you may disagree or annoy each other, but both will always be there for the other. In the two Worst Wars in History and now in later conflicts they served side by side,I find it very reassuring:cool:

Yes there are firms lol it's not made up, my mates dad is in one and he is a complete nutter so unfortunately the violence is real
