Congrats. If it's been a while since the last visit, it will be fun visiting the new visitor's center and seeing the foliage changes that have been done at Little Round Top and Devil's Den. Have a great time.{bravo}} -- Al

Lucky you Jeremie. If you have the time I would highly recommend eating at the Dobbin House Tavern (built in 1776) and also the Farnsworth Inn (used by Confederate sharpshooters). Both very historical and both offer great food and fare . . .

This is a good idea, plus Farnsworth House used to have a terrific book/print shop, although it has been a while since I have been there. -- Al

Thanks Mike, we have already put the Dobbins on our list!!!

We will look at the Farnsworth Inn as well. Thanks!!!

Are you staying in a hotel or Bed and Breakfast? If you ever get a chance, there's some nice B&B's, but may be expensive for a whole week. Every time I go, I have a few "must stops:"
-John Zabawa's Gettysburg Miniature Soldiers
-Stan Clark's stuff in the Antique Center near the Lincoln Square
-Tommy's Pizza
-Dale Gallon's Art Gallery
-Battlefield (of course :wink2:)
-Lord Nelson's Art Gallery (near Lincoln Square) (a lot of F&I War art and books)

I know there's others, but these are the ones off the top of my head.
Have fun!!

A nice time of year. It's been cool and rainy, but that should clear up. Road construction in GB has been atrocious though. Almost every major street has something going on and Middle Street (the one that takes you to the first day of the battle) is closed in sections. So traffic is painful by GB standards. My advice to anyone is get a tour guide at the visitor's center. They will ride around the battlefield with you and answer any questions. If you are ambitious, try to find the marker where they say the first shot of the battle was fired. I came on it by accident west of town.

Thanks for the heads up!!!!! I will try and find it as well.. Any other hints!!!!

If you are taking the family stop in a "Boyd's Bears"..lots of fun "fur" young and old.

Also you might want to visit the "Land of Little Horses"...only 5 miles outside of town

Boyd's went out of business recently. They had a huge store there and just shutdown. On the upside, 50 more jobs to China. Maybe that will alleviate the "labor shortage" and bring down toy soldier prices. :wink2:

I thought I saw somewhere that there were horseback tours. Has anyone seen that before?

Is this what you mean? :p This was my wife and I on our 1st anniversary, in Gettysburg!!!!! Yeah, she's pretty cool ^&cool IMG_0053.JPG

I hope you and yours have a great time- just don't stir things up- I know how you Johnny Rebs get a little crazy when you get up here. {sm4}{sm4}

There are plenty of horse riding excursions. If you check the weather forecasts around here though, plan for the exact opposite- things have been really wacky of late.

I second going to John Z's shop. He's rennovated it and it's much larger and easier to get around in. He's a great guy as well- his son is too {sm4}. I also agree about the land of little horses- I usually take my kids once a year.

Have fun and soak it all in!!

Thanks for the info on Boyds Bears, I didn't know they closed. That was a really unusal and fun "store".

Thanks guys! This thread has been helpful to me too. I may be going there in July (its kind of far from the Pittsburgh area, where I'll be. I'll will hopefully be going to Fort Ligonier too and will take pictures for the French & Indian War fans and because of Combat's numerous posts, will see Battle of Bushy Run.

Ft. Ligonier is one of the best, if not the best F-I war site. A nice bookstore there as well. The little town is a good place for lunch and they have a small toy soldier shop in town - or at least they did a couple years back. Bushy Run is a great place. Make sure you have specific directions or it's impossible to find. Go on a weekend and there might be a volunteer guide available. The guide who showed me around is a member of this forum. They have a small visitor center and brief movie. No high tech stuff. There aren't many signs so to fully appreciate it you may want to bone up on the battle beforehand. Pittsburgh is a great city. I always imagined an aging steel town, but it's fairly hip. Johnstown - the site of the great flood is nearby (try the gobs!) and the 9/11 flight 93 memorial. Lots to see for history buffs.

Not to digress from Gettysburg, but I've been to Fort Ligonier about 3-years ago and loved it. I was amazed at how they could move cannon and wagon over those hilly areas and through those woods. Went to the toy shop too. I asked the locals about Bushy Run and they said there wasn't much there, so I didn't go (we went right by it in the car on the way to my wife's cousin's house). But after Combat's encouragements and Barzos new Bushy Run playset, I have to check it out. Again, I want to go to Gettysburg too. Been there twice, but only for a day with everything being rushed. Hired a personal guide who drove your car, which was very informative. I was amazed at the amount rifles, swords and equipment they had on display. Interestingly, my wife's family knows almost nothing about their State's rich history. If I lived in PA, there is no doubt that I would be a ACW, Revolutionary war or French & Indian war collector, instead of the WWII collector I am today.
