Hi There!

I've just joined up so I thought I might aswell introduce myself! I'm on the search for some answers at the moment, I have some lead soldiers that need identifying. I'm about to move house, and I came across these under piles of Junk! I think they are from around the early 50's/Late 40's. They have no markings on them are not exactly in the best of condition. I'm interested in putting a manufacturer and value on them as I'm considering selling them if they are worth anything. Anyway, here are a few pics:

Other than being completely baffled about these, I also make Plastic Model Kits and Have an avid interest in Model Railways. I just finished building a Revell 1/48 B-25 and am currently working on a large D-Day Diorama based on Omaha Beach and loosely on the film Saving Private Ryan. I'm working on some Pegasus 1/72 D-Day Rangers at the moment which are very nice. I'm also a member and moderator on the Airfix Tribute Forum (http://airfixtributeforum.myfastforum.org/index.php).

Nice job on the bomber and the artillery group.

I think those older fellows are Britains. I don't know what set or if indeed they are Britains but they sure do look like'm.

Have fun with us, we will have fun with you :eek: Oh, I forgot, I'm not supposed to use threats to make friends. Shannon (HRH the Queen of Toysoldierania) made me promise. :mad: Oh yeah, other smilie guy ;) :)

Thanks for the Welcome! I'm mostly interested in WWII Stuff, and the Early 50's Era of Model Railways.

I have to agree, Alan Partridge makes hysterical viewings, maybe a little (or very) depressing at times! I live about a mile away from the BP Garage that is featured in Series two (I'm from Naaarwich!, UK). To quote "Inside this apple turnover, the core is in excess of One thousand degrees. If I squeeze it, a jet of Molten Brambly Apple could go your way, it could go mine"... Then, after AP has relaxed he takes a huge bite out of the Turnover that's been in the Microwave for 8 mins!:D

So, these soldiers then... I'm pretty clueless on anything from Previous history that hasn't been depicted by either Airfix or Age of Empires - any clues? I thought they might be redcoats, but thats just because they're in red;). Are they Brits, thats what I thought?!

Hi Owen,

Welcome to the forum. I am going to take a stab at IDing those figures I am pretty sure they arent Britains for a couple of reasons the Scots marching are leading off with the wrong foot to be Britains. I think they are probably John Hill & Co or which would make them pre war since they became Johillco before they went under in 1960. The mounted troopers are more problematic but again I think they ar not Britains but I am not sure enough to make a guess on the maker there are some folks on the forum that may have a better idea or may know them right away see if HHenry pops up. He might know. Also you could send an email to James Opie at Christies he has a website of his own I believe and is the expert when it comes to the old soldiers, but it might cost you something since he is a consultant and has published several books on Toy Soldiers.

Can't help out with the ID on those figures I'm afraid.

Ta for the Airfix link. I tend not to go in for the models so much nowadays, but do collect the 1/32 soldier series.

Have you still got that model / toy shop in the arcade in Naaarwich?

Welcome aboard Owen. WWII is my main interest & K&C. I do have many others in my collection.
I had to give up model railroading don't have the eyes or hands for it nowdays. I modeled UK railroads OO scale Steam. Have many MRR friends in the UK and used to vist them often.
Hope you have good time on TFT forum theres a great bunch of people here.

Thanks for more welcomes! Thats interesting that they might be Pre-War. I've never heard about John Hill & Co, so I'll have a scoot around the net! Any ideas on their value if they are this old?:D

BTW, where might I be able to find any ID/markings on the soldiers if they were John Hill & Co? There is no engravement on the bases, might there be some elsewhere?

Ron,thats not Owen!.Its a famous comedian(Steve Coogan) over here whose most famous creation(Alan Partridge) is the most obnoxious,unpleasant,vile DJ ever to grace the radio.It is a hugely popular programme over here,and one you watch through your hands as he is so awful its embarassing.It started on Radio some years ago before moving to TV.During the first Radio series he insulted Lesbians,hit a child,smoked dope and Generally upset every guest he had.It was so convincing that dozens of people rang the BBC to complain that they couldn't believe someone like this was on the Radio!

Owen I know they're not Britains. I'm thinking they're really old Mignot. I mean like early 20th century. The hands look just like Mignot. Mignot bases are brown but in the late 19th and early 20th century they were green. I have a book on the history of Mignot. I'll check it tonight. I'm not 100% on this and someone might correct me.
