The second and final part of my 2014 order, with 67 sets, was shipped from Montevideo on Friday, January 16th. The expected arrival in California is Thursday January 22nd. Guillermo sent me a photo of his dad, Jaime Hiriart, showing him with my order as he waits for the FedEx pickup. Although I have been dealing with Hiriart for more than 10 years, this is the first time I have seen a photo of him. Jaime started making wooden toy soldiers in the 1960s and evolved into making 54mm, glossy metal toy soldiers, inspired by Britains, over the following decades. I believe he is, for all intents and purposes, retired; Guillermo carries on with the family business.

Thanks Buster. It is always a great deal of fun to receive those orders and to subsequently distribute them to the southern California collectors at Bob Walker's house.

Thank you also for the birthday greeting. Jean and I ate at one of my favorite Italian restaurants, Cafe Allegro in La Vern, and then my son and granddaughter spent the week end with us. What could be better than that?

Mike

Well, the order arrived Thursday as scheduled, but I wasn't here to receive it nor was my wife. Although it required a signature, I left a note for the FedEx driver who was kind enough to leave it on my front porch. To digress for a moment, I was on jury duty in Superior Court and dodged a bullet. They wanted jurors for a 90 day trail and it was not an acceptable excuse that you didn't want to serve on a trail of that duration. Fortunately, I am scheduled for two cataract surgeries in March and did not have to go into that jury pool and was dismissed. I am familiar with the case which involved a drunk female driver who was driving at high speed the wrong way on the freeway here in Diamond Bar at 4 AM. She killed six people and had previous DUI convictions. The defense did not want me on that jury.

Back to toy soldiers: What a mess I make going through these orders. The Styrofoam sticks to everything and I have to keep a vacuum cleaner close by, but I have to be careful not to vacuum up any of my granddaughter's little toys. My dog Kassie always keeps a close eye on what I am doing or probably wonders what in the heck I am doing.

This is Bob's IMPERIAL RUSSIAN LIFE GUARDS HUSSARS BAND, 1914. They have red rather than white plumes. The last photo is Bob's five figure add-on set so that his band will have 14 figures: leader, drum horse, and 12 musicians.
