I must admit that for years I really had no interest in collecting Latin American themed military figures. I honestly didn't know much about them and rarely saw them. However, that all changed when fellow collector Bob Walker starting collecting Hiriart's Latin American sets and I really took a good look at them for the first time. I am now trying to collect a least one set from every country. Many of Hiriart's offerings mirror early Britains sets with many military schools represented, but others are unique.

I don't collect gloss but I always make a point of looking at others collections, this company has a vast range of figures I have never seen before now.

There seems to be quite a German influence on many of the uniforms but thinking about it I suppose there was bound to be!

Jeff,

You are right. One can see the Imperial German influence on many of these uniforms and some post-Imperial uniforms, especially with the Chilean and Argentines, who are wearing the German style combat helmet. Other countries seem to be greatly influenced by French military style uniforms. Did you notice that Hiriart has two sets (marines and commandos) that represent Argentine units that fought in the Falkland Islands? Their uniforms are similar to U.S. World War II uniforms. I took one upper division class in Latin American History in college decades ago, but I believe that some sets represent historic uniforms are from a number of 19th Century wars (i.e., the War of the Pacific, the Chaco War, etc.).

The first two photos are the last two catalog sets in the Latin America series that I have photos of. The next three photos are from special, non-catalog sets.

Here are four bands which are all non-catalog specials, but based on regular catalog sets (i.e., the regular catalog set has nine foot or five cavalry figures and the bands were made based on the uniforms from those catalog sets).

Here are three new photos from the 2011 CD. Set 1157 Blandengues de Artigas, Uruguay represents a frontier cavalry unit founded in 1797 that carries the name of Colonel Artigas who was head of the "gauchos" and started the Uruguayan insurrection against their foreign oppressor. There is also a photo of an expanded version of this set. The third set is of the Uruguayan Navy in historic uniforms.

I noticed that there is another version of the Ejercito Argentino, 1950 non-catalog set on the new CD. On post #11 the troops are wearing German style helmets while the new version shows them in what appear to be Spanish (or Swiss?) style helmets. I like the newer version better than the old.

Just a comment on the new forum format. The word "new" appears both at the end of the first line and at the start on the second line of post #19. I did not type it twice. When I go to the edit post function to remove the extra word, it is only there once and therefore cannot be removed. I have seen this on other occasions with the new forum format with the duplicate words always appearing on a line break.
