Hiriart has a separate Spanish Civil War catalog numbering 40 sets. Five of these set are duplicated in their regular catalog, but the remainder are unique.

Interestingly, this catalog is based on color plates done by Spaniard, Jose Bueno. In fact, Bueno's plates are numbered ES01 through ES40 and Hiriart has produced a toy soldier set for each one with the exact same numbering system based on those plates.

I don't have photos of ever set in the SCW catalog, but where I don't I will substitute the corresponding Bueno plate.

Mike,

Thanks for posting these and sending me the email. Two of the sets you had mentioned in your email as possibly both Republican and Nationalist are Nationalist because the flags they are carrying is the Monarchist pre-Second Republic flag (the present Spanish flag) whereas the flag of the Republic is different (has purple in it).

Thanks for the information regarding the difference in the Republican and Nationalists Spanish National flags. I did not know that they were different. I'll have to do a Google search to see where the purple is. However, Hiriart would make those sets as specials with the correct flag if I asked them to. Is all I would have to do is send them a copy of what it should look like.

Greaf beautiful stuff, thanks for posting. I wonder why they made no Republican sets, the war looks too one sided this way...

Cheers,
Paulo

My only conclusion why he only made sets for the Nationalists wasn't that there weren't too many opportunities for the Republicans to march in parade formations but this is just a guess on my part. However, I have seen a photo of the Assault Guards marching through Barcelona in parade formation after they put down the Anarchist insurrection (the so-called revolution within the revolution) in 1937.

Hi Paulo,

Well, the answer is simple. Hiriart's SCW sets are entirely based on Jose Bueno's color plates which cover the 1939 Nationalist's victory parade. The SCW line did not come with box top labels until last year when I asked Guillermo if he would make one for the sets. I was hoping for a least a single generic label that I could put on each box, but he did me one better and made one specifically for each set. The labels say "Desfile De La Victoria" and then lists the specific set (e.g., Infantria 1939 ES-01). I assume that means something like Victory Parade. Now, here is where I need Brad's help translating.

I agree, though, that it would be nice to have Republican units, too. This isn't the only conflict where Hiriart has only made units from one side. They made two sets of Irish infantry, 1319 Irish Free State Inf with a General Michael Collins figure and 1320 Irish Volunteers, but no British Black & Tans to go with them. There are a number of British Boer War sets too, but no Boers. However, they do have set 1042 Tuaregs to go with the FFL sets. So maybe there is hope.

BTW, I assume you are aware of Stefano Allorini's Saimex Toys in Italy who carries the Hiriart line. His sets sell for 110 Euros, about $153 USD, and have eight figures rather than nine. He is at www.saimextoys.com. There is a Spanish dealer, El Infante, who sells these SCW sets at an outragous 207 Euros, about $287 each.

In 2006, my wife, son, daughter-in-law, and I visited your beautiful country along with Spain and Morocco. My daughter-in-law, in particular, was taken by the charm and beauty of your country. She loved the Faro music.

Mike,

Yes, Desfile de la Victoria means Victory Parade.

I have also seen references to a book called Uniformes Militares de la Guerra Civil Espanola (Military Uniforms of the Spanish Civil War) by Jose M. Bueno so I assume it must be the same author.

Mike,

A good percentage of the Guardia Civil stayed loyal to the Republic so I would be interested in the Mounted Guardia. I will email you and get you an image of the Republican flag. I would also be interested in the infanteria in summer uniforms.

Brad,

Thanks for the translation. If you get a chance, check out Bueno's book and see if that is where the color plates come from. I have several examples in my earlier posts of what the plates look like.

Mike,

As far as I can tell (although I haven't done a thorough search yet), the book is out of print (1972) and I will take a look at Abe Books to see if it's available, at a not too crazy price.

Regards,

Brad,

Set ES26 Guardia Civil Caballeria is a set I do not have, but I ordered one for Bob Walker a couple of years ago and it is striking. Unlike the photo which shows only three figures, it comes with five mounted figures. I would have to order it for you with my Hiriart Order #7 in 2011. I will also order one for me. I have an two ES27 Infanteria sets coming with the second half of my current Hiriart Order #6; one is for a Danish collector and the other is for resale (I already have the set), but it has the other flag. I assume you would like both these sets as specials with the Republican flag.
