Actually they are both. My personal Hiriart collection numbers just over 200 sets as does the collection of my friend and fellow collector, Bob Walker. Over the past couple of years, I have added 20 other collectors to my list that I also order for. They are mainly located here in Southern California, but include collectors from Texas, Nebraska, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Denmark (2). I met the majority of them at the West Coaster Show. Over the past five years, they have ordered from two to 20 sets each, so you can see that Bob and I comprise the lions share of the sets ordered in the past.

My pending 2011 Hiirart order is up to 125 sets now, about half are for me and the balance divided between other collectors and for general resale. For example, I am ordering 12 Spanish Civil War sets: six for me, four for other collectors, and two for resale. What I have started doing lately is when I order a set for me I will order an extra set for resale, so that I will have something to sell at the West Coaster each year. All this being said, I am a collector and not a dealer. I do this for the fun of it, not as a business---I need to sell 15 more Hiriart sets from my 2010 order to break even, which may take another year or two. But it really doesn't matter.

I'm the New Jersey one. I'm up to four! :)

Mike,

Thanks for the info. That's quite an order isn't it! Sort of a self funding collection. ^&cool

Jeff,

I waited until I submitted my final 2011 Hiriart Order #7 to respond. Yes, it is quite an order; in fact, it got too large and I had to cut it back somewhat. It numbered 161 sets (my largest order to date): 42 sets are for my personal collection, 60 sets are for 13 other collectors, and the balance is for resale. Non-catalog specials totaled 36 sets of the 161 and included mounted Italian Carabinieri; World War II Poles, Slovaks, Hungarians, German Cavalry, and Kuban Cossacks; Egyptian and Sudanese Infantry; 19th Century Uruguayan Navy; Imperial Guard Cossacks; and the Royal Berkshire Regiment. The standard catalog sets are an eccletic lot ranging from the British Red Devils Parachute Regiment to British Artillery on Camels at Khartoum. The order includes only five Spanish Civil War sets: ES-01 Infanteria Espana (winter), ES-19 Requette Navarro (Carlista monarchists), and ES-39 Falange de Navarra.

I just received Part 2 of my Hiriart Order # 7 today. In addition to the 50 sets in the shipment, there was an updated catalog CD which has a couple of new photos of the following two SCW sets:

ES-19 CARLISTA REQUETE NAVARRO

ES-39 FALANGE de NAVARRA

I particularly like the man in the plaid shirt with the cross. The original set did not include that figure.

Mike,

Did you ever order a set with the Republican flag?

Brad,

Does "East of Laguna" mean that you are out here in Southern California or is that just wishful thinking? The reason I am asking is that we are meeting at Bob Walker's house on Saturday at 10:00 AM and you are welcome to join us.

Mike,

It's wishful thinking now. We were out staying in Laguna Niguel a few weeks back and spent some time in Laguna Beach (one of my favotite places) and went to the Festival of the Arts (quite neat).

Probably should have gotten your number but the time just seemed to fly. Maybe next time.

So I am now east of Laguna, way east! :D

Brad,

My son lives in Laguna Niguel and we drive the 40 miles from Diamond Bar to his house once or twice a week to see our three and one half year old granddaughter. Next time you are out here, do give me a call. I can arrange for you to see Ed Ruby's and Bob Walker's collections, if you wish.

Here is photo of some of Bob Walker's Spanish Civil War sets taken on November 5th at his open house. From left to right:

ES-04 F.E.T. & J.O.N.S. Milicias Colour Party

ES-39 Falange de Navarra

ES-01 Infanteria, 1939

I received a shipment from Uruguay today which included set ES-3 MEHAL-LA HALIFIANA Berber infantry which is also found in the regular catalog as set 1215. There was also a special add-on set of 9 extra men. The set I have in my collection is an old version that does not have the officer in the fez, but rather has an ammunition carrier for the machine gun. I don't know if Morocco is misspelled or if that is the correct spelling in Spanish.

Mike,

The correct spelling of the country in Spanish is Marruecos.

Brad

When I started this thread, I mentioned that all forty sets in this unique catalog were based on the forces that fought on the Nationalist's side and who took part in the 1939 victory parade at the end of the war. Therefore, although there are units of the regular Spanish Armed Forces, Spanish Foreign Legion, Moroccans, Italians, and Germans, there are no Republican units in the catalog. Several members of the Forum and elsewhere have asked if it might be possible to make a special, non-catalog set depicting the Republican side. On my next Hiriart order, I have decided to rectify this by ordering a set of Republican infantry. Several suggestions included using specific existing sets and just changing the flag from the Nationalist to the Republican. Better yet, I would like to make the Republican infantry from set ES-17 ARTILLERIA de MONTANA which has figures wearing Adrian helmets. In the attached photo, I will ask Hiriart to use the officer and three men following the two mounted figures as the basis for this special set. It will be composed of an officer, a bugler, a Republican flag bearer, a mule with handler, and four men. I have also attached a photo of the Flag of the Second Spanish Republic, thanks to Jazzeum. If any Forum members or guests, would be interested in acquiring this set, please contact me directly at matara42@roadrunner.com.

Since the last post, I have received several emails from addressees that I don't recognize. Since they had nothing on the subject line, I deleteted them assuming that they might be spam or a virus. If you are trying to contact me, please put something in the subject line like Treefrog, Hiriart, Spanish Civil War, etc. so that I can assume that it is a legitimate message. Thanks.

Someone has suggested that set ES-01 INFANTERIA, 1939 could be made as Republican Infantry, especially with a red star on the front of their helmets. If the red star is historically accurate, I could see this set as an attractive alternative.

At one time jazzeum suggested that set ES-26 GUARDIA CIVIL, CABALLERIA could be used for the Republican unit since the Civil Guard had units which fought on both sides.

Another possibility for the Rebublican unit could be based on set ES-25 GUARDIA CIVIL.
