Historical movies where they change the facts (1 Viewer)

I can understand certain liberties that directors/producers take.

For example in Black Hawk Down:

The characters wore personalized helmets.

The film features soldiers wearing helmets with their last names on them. Although this was not accurate, director Ridley Scott used this device to help the audience distinguish between the characters because “they all look the same once the uniforms are on.”

Somebody recently told me similar about Tom Hanks rank bars on his helmet in SPR. Added so people would know he was the leader but apparently not done in real life. No problem with that.

I agree, however I fear we will see less and less Realism in films as Political Correctness and audience Bias and Expectation becomes increasingly prevalent.

Agreed, apparently its got a lot to do with being 'offended'.

We aren't permitted to 'offended' anyone these days as it may cause un-necessary distress and hurt feelings, which may of course result with persons being further 'offended'.

Don't officers remove anything that shows they are officers so they are not singled out by the enemy?

All,

I am really shocked and appalled at all the comments in this thread and am offended. Yes I am. I cannot believe that no one has pointed out that in all the movies your talking about that there is no mention of any Texans in the historical movies, because there were. Yes, there were a couple of Texans at Dunkirk (according to our records) fighting it out with the Nazi's. There were Texans in Blackhawk down shooting it up against the Somalis. Hamburger Hill should have been name Chicken Fried Steak Hill. And there were plenty of Texans in the London Blitz's sorting "it" out and oh yeah, Staligrad had its fair share of Texans it that scuffle too...they snuck in.

So, for the record there have been Texans in all those conflicts in one way or another and uh I am getting tired of the movies not representing such. Shame on the industry for overlooking this part of history. And shame on you my fellow collectors for segwaying the conversation away from the contribution of Texas to the world.

PS: Oh yeah, the movie "The Darkest Hour"...Churchill was quarter Texan.

All volunteered for those conflicts. They'd do anything to get out of Fort Hood.

Black Hawk Down mentions Texas (see bold and underlined type):

Mr. Atto: I see not catching Aidid is becoming routine.

General Garrison: We're not leaving Somalia until we find him. And we will find him.

Mr.Atto: Don't make the mistake of thinking because I grew up without running water I am simple General. I do know something about history. See all this? It's simply shaping tomorrow. A tomorrow without a lot of Arkansas white-boys' ideas in it.

Gen. Garrison: Well, I wouldn't know about that. I'm from Texas.

Thanks for the tip. The next time somebody mentions issues with Gallipoli or Singapore I can say that was his Texan part ^&grin:salute::

However in the interests of fairness where was the British or Aussie representation in the Texan Sniper movie with Bradley Cooper.

Brother, you got me there. I don't think we rolled that far south in Singapore and Gallipoli. I don't think us Texans would do well under British command...a la Breaker Morant.

AND suffice to say, American Sniper was just that...'Merican. More so, an American movie about a Texan. When you got a story about a Texan, uh, there is not much room for the Brits and Aussies. Sorry brotha.

Hey, Texas is brought up in Full Metal Jacket. A great ''conversation'' between Gunnery Sgt. Hartman and Pvt. Cowboy.
Would have to edited it too much to print here on the forum. - Sir! Yes Sir!

THAT IS THE BEST! I watched that movie with my daughter one time and she was appalled (she is a teenager). However, she loved the "jelly donut" scene. She could not handle the rest of the movie.

John "because I was hungry sir" from Texas

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman:

Because you were hungry...

Private Pyle has dishonored himself and dishonored the platoon! I have tried to help him, but I have failed! I have failed because you have not helped me! You have not given Private Pyle the proper motivation! So, from now on, whenever Private Pyle ****s up, I will not punish him, I will punish all of you! And the way I see it, ladies, you owe me for one jelly doughnut! Now, get on your faces!

Open your mouth!

They're paying for it, you eat it!
