I am looking to find, buy, have painted, whatever a set of English Monarchs from William I through Elizabeth I

If anyone knows who has castings of them, I am willing to have them painted. they don't have to be the same manufacturer, but I want them to look like a set, so they should be similar in scale and quality. I plan to have them painted by the same person (possibly in Russia) as well to, again, make them look like a set.

I'm assuming this will be an ongoing project as the cost to do it all at once would be insane!

thanks for any help!

Zach

Wow Zach, sounds like a cool project! Your such a high roller...!!!!

It'll reach across the catalogs of numerous makers. I don't think any one maker has ever put out a set of figures of all of the British, and previously, English, monarchs, except perhaps Otto Gottstein.

Britains has produced a number of them, both in the classic catalog and currently.

Russell Gammage had a couple of them in his Rose Miniatures line, including George III and Queen Charlotte, and maybe Henry IV or V, and the Black Prince.

Stadden also had a number of them in the catalog, and I think you'll still find some in Tradition's current listings. I have a figure of Elizabeth I with Raleigh laying his cloak across the puddle, from Stadden.

Yes, that will be quite a display, when you've collected all of them.

Prost!

Nice idea Zach - though I assume you mean up until our present Queen, Elizabeth II ? Why stop at Elizabeth I ?

As Brad pointed out, Otto Gotstein did indeed produce a series - though these were 30mm Flats, of course ( see a few below: See in W Y Carman, 1973, Model Soldiers; pp.24/25) - replicas of which which do still come up for sale from time to time - I've seen a partial set on Vectis auction site recently.

A far better idea though, might be to search out some at say, 54mm ( probably the most common scale) - and, as you say, get them painted up by the same hand. A good way to start would be to identify all the Monarchs you need ( Wikipedia?) - and then start looking - and just tick them off as you identify from where to source them. Some may be easy - and some more difficult.

Do try to go for something a little different than the usual single figure pose though - which will make your eventual display far more interesting.

Here's one to start you off, maybe - which I am on the point of finishing for my own collection. It's of Queen Victoria, being driven in The Ivory Phaeton, when she was an older lady. I bought this one as a casting from WP World Models - and they also do a four horse version of a Landau with her - or QEII in it. I know of quite a few more castings of Kings and Queens of Great Britain - so if you get stuck for any on your list - just post a message - and either me - or probably many others could help you out with advice on where to look.

Best of luck with the project - and be sure to keep the thread updated with progress - should be a fascinating ride. johnnybach

I like your flats Idea JB ;)
Ray

I don't know of anyone who currently makes a replica version of them as Flats though Ray - and it would need another figure of H M Queen Elizabeth II, to bring it up to date, as Otto's version stopped at her father, King George VI, of course.

You're the guy with the expert knowledge on flats - do you know IF they are still currently being made?? If not - any idea of the rarity of this set - and where they might be available - and at what cost?????

Lottsa questions there Ray?:D jb

For the Gottstein molds, I'd start with Scholtz (Berliner Zinnfiguren), but I think John's right, I don't know that anyone is currently producing that series.

I had forgotten about the recent figures of Queen Victoria, castings and finished figures. I remember seeing a pair of figures depicting the Queen and Mr. Brown, but I don't recall who made them.

Prost!

It's the same TS Company Brad - R P World Models - run by Bob Pratti. They make a four horse Landau (two postillion riders) and John Brown holding the door open - for Queen Vic to step down onto a small set of steps. I was strongly tempted to spend some more of my pocket-money on one - to complement my Ivory Phaeton. Still might, one of these days.

Asset also makes a Landau carriage - with King George V riding in it - should Zach like to have one of those for his KGV. Available ready-painted OR as a casting too. Both are of model quality. jb

Ok I'll look into it....

Ah, thanks for the tip, John! I remember seeing an article in TS&MF or TSC about it. Very attractive sets!

Hi,
You can also get in touch with Bob Hornung. He makes Charles I, Alfred the Great, and others.

I would also go to Alexanders Toy Soldiers. He has some ECW figures.

I am starting to collect personality figures so I would really like to hear how you are progressing and where you find the figures.
Thanks,
MikeNick

Hmmm, I just had a thought - I'd love to get all castings and have John "beating retreat" paint the whole series for me!!!! ^&grin

Good idea Zach. I've been thinking of some of the castings that I know of which might fill a few gaps for you - so here's my first pass at a few - and where to see them online.

Tradition of London.
Henry V
Henry VIII
Elizabeth I ( with Sir Walter Raleigh and cloak)
Charles I

Asset Miniatures:
King George V - either on horseback - or seated in a Landau

Dorset Soldiers:
King George III

Whitetower Miniatures:
Richard I ( from Knight kit of parts)
Victoria - In Landau with John brown opening the door - OR - Ivory Mounted Phaeton
Elizabeth II - in Ivory Mounted Phaeton

Note: I'm currently trying to talk Mathew into making me a William the Conqueror casting from one of his Norman Knights ( needs a crown on his helm). If succesful, I'll let you know if he's available from the above.

Britains:
QEII - mounted on Burmese ( when she was younger - in tunic of Guards at Trooping of the Colour).

Hope that's a helpful start. Good luck with the project - and hope you can get John to paint them for you. jb

Wow - thanks for the list! definitely will be a great start!

From my Russian made collection, Here's what I already have (i would have thought I'd have had a better start than this!). Quite a few doubles here:

Henry V Plantagenet King of England Fighting
King Henry V Battle Set
King Richard the Lionheart w/Sword Mounted
Richard III - standing w/ spear
Edward I - King of England in Court Dress
King Edward II w/ Sword Mounted
King Richard the Lionheart w/ Sword and Shield (90 mm)
William the Conqueror
King Henry V
King Richard the Lionheart w/ Flag
John Plantagenet
Edward III w/ Sword
Henry VIII (120mm)
Henry VII (120mm)
King Edward IV
King Henry Vth of England
Henry VIII and His Wives
Alfred the Great

So I checked with the boys over at international flat figure society the Gottenstein English Monarchy molds are now in Leipzig and as is often the case with flats they are not currently in production. I will see if there are any sets out there.
Ray

You're very welcome Zach. You've got me interested in your project now - as looking through my own collection - I think that I have a few of these myself.^&grin

Incidentally, I made a mistake - the Victoria and Elizabeth are from RP World Models - and not as I intimated from Whitetower Miniatures - sorry about the error.:redface2:

ALSO - I have been chatting, coincidentally, with Matthew - who owns Whitetower - about the possibility of making me up a figure depicting a 54mm King William I (William the Conqueror) from one of his Norman knights - and.............. I've just ordered him! He's making me up a new head - with a crown - on an existing mounted casting he has - so once I've assembled and painted him - I'll post him, to show you what he looks like.

(All of mine are 54mm, by the way - as I see yours are at various scales.)

Another tip for your project - is that you could use various old "Knights in Armour" castings - to depict many of the old kings of England between say the 11th through 14th centuries. As they were mostly wearing armour - as long as you get hold of a reasonable picture of what they looked like - and a reasonable casting - that should do as a start, for many of them.

Again - good luck - I'll watch how you get on - with interest. jb

Thanks!

Ideally I do want the same scale - I was just posting what I just happen to already have.

Looking forward to seeing what he makes for you!

I emailed berliner zinnfiguren about the set of flats and he said he didn't have them and doesn't know who might

Otto Gottstein Figures arrived today! (huge thanks to a certain member here for helping me acquire them!)

I am in talks with some painters in St. Petersburg to see who will do the painting. Once this gets off the ground, I will post a thread so everyone can follow the progress.

I have two things I have to figure out:

1. The best way to frame them and somehow get engraved label tags to put under each figure in the frame and
2. Figuring out who is who in the set!

Foamboard with cut out space for the figures covered with a black or dark bue piece of velvet works just fine in a "deep" IKEA frame.
