Hi, Rob, you can use turpentine or mineral spirits, or turpenoid, they all have their own qualities, and their adherents. The most common advantage of turpenoid is that it doesn't smell as bad as turpentine, according to many who use it. But it's basically an odorless mineral spirit.
I've used all three, and I haven't developed a real preference, except that I can use the mineral spirits with some of my enamel paints as well as with oils, while the turpentine doesn't seem to be as good a solvent for enamels.
