Hotel de Lille (1 Viewer)

Ken mate,
BEAUTIFUL. Wonderful work. The second dio just finishes off the Hotel wonderfully. Fell in love with it whilst in Chicago. Sir John Monash and his troops will be be pleased.
Have a safe trip Downunder little Hotel and Barn.
I salute your work.
Cheers Howard:salute::

Ken and Erica,

This is another fine example of your incredibly gifted diorama work. And it's why I'm chomping at the bit to have a conversation with you both at Louis' in a few weeks. See you there..........All the best.

Hi All!
I have had a few requests to show the overall layout of the "Hotel de Lille" diorama. Here is a shot of it from overhead with a yard stick next to it for scale.

While I had it out of the box I thought I would snap a few other images of it for record.

These last two are some of my favorites for atmosphere.

I hope you enjoyed looking!

Ken, did you intend to have the shade on the front of the building? I really like the feel of the warm sunny day. It adds to the realism.

Good question!
When looking through my own photos of real places I noted that I could not always take the photos with ideal light. Sometimes it is back lit, or the sun is high casting harsh shadows.

As a result I will often create these harsh shadows, or even cast a shadow from a 'Tree' offstage to imply that the world does not just end at the edge of the diorama.
Often when we shoot pictures of our models we create a soft overall lighting so that everything is visible. We most often see this in catalog shots of products for obvious reasons, however I think the art of the diorama is a different creature.

I often explain in scenery clinics that when looking at a fine oil painting, once you move in close enough that the frame disappears from your peripheral vision, you enter another world. The same can be said for dioramas... when the edge or frame disappears from view you can travel to another time and place. The most effective way to do this is the 'Shadow Box' style diorama where the artist can even control what you see and the lighting.

More on that later!

Very well done, Ken. Another Masterpiece.

Can you now start modifying your standard offerings to represent the Eastern Front?

Ken has indicated that his next rnage of buildings will be 18th/19th century North American architecture that will be suited for both the AWI and the ACW . . .

Hi,
Just curious, do you ever make copies of past dioramas upon request? Would it be possible/how much would it cost to get a second of the main hotel....
Also, is this the one you had listed on your site as, "Somewhere in France"
Thanks,
Sandor:salute::

Hello there!
To date I haven't made an exact copy of any diorama. Each one will be a little different, and I think that is fine for most collectors. With that said, I would certainly consider doing something similar to "Hotel de Lille" again as I enjoyed making this building.

"Somewhere in France" was a completely different diorama and was sold some time ago now.

If you might be interested in a similar diorama, contact me with any questions and for pricing at hudsonandallen.com.
Thank you all for your interest!
