I wanted to start this thread to get an idea how everyone collects their K&C Figures:

do you buy the entire range?

do you buy what you like and hop back and forth from different ranges??

do you buy multiples of the same figure and store them for your collection???

or do you buy a few extra to save for another day to sell on ebay??

Lets Hear It ! :D Jump in and let us know How You Collect Your King and Country.......;)

Well i am very methodical and completist in my collecting.I work my way through the ranges i collect and only occaisionally allow myself to get distracted into buying something not on the list. This approach can take months or even years but i get there in the end.A lot also depends on how quickly sets are retired and i keep an Eagle eye on this situation so as not to miss out.I have not yet bought any multiples but could be tempted with some of the D day figures.

I have no interest in selling stuff on ebay so i don't get involved. My collecting is purely for the enjoyment of it.However one day when i'm no longer around i hope my wife makes a mint with my stuff on ebay!.

I feel my collecting is a real labour of love and deciding my strategy and priorities are all part of the fun.As is The 'Chase' as it were.As James (Easy)said to me at the London show,it would be wonderful to win the lottery and buy it all in one go,but that would take some of the fun out of it.

When i first started I was really hot on getting the retirments but I'm not so fussed about getting them now. My new method is to focus on the stuff I really like rather than just getting something because it's retired.

Anyway I only collect WW2 and have quite a good selection of Winter and Summer German figures and vehicles now and the old fallschirmjagers.
Quite a few US vehicles and only 3 British vehicles and the Tommy patrol!

My favourite range is the Afrika Korps and that's the one i've mainly focused one.

Now I've set myself a goal over the next 12 months to collect the Fallschirmjager and Arnhem range.

Our collection, and how we display & add to it depends on the range.

Me & the Wife's Collection.
Ancient Egypt:We have a small display comprising Cleopatra set w/Nubian Bodyguard, Caesar & Mark Antony Gift Givers set, Royal Mascot set, Court Musician set, a couple of the Dancing Girls sets, a Standing Centurion & couple of Standing w/Spear from the Ancient Rome set.
I can't see us adding to this. Maybe a couple of Standing Guardsmen w/Spear to balance out the quantity of Romans.

Wife's Collection.
LAH:Quite a few multiples. This is the only range we have that contains more than 2 multiples, cos that's what this range screams out for.

Me & the Wife's Collection.
S of OHK + Imperial:This is an ongoing labour of love. We have maybe around 75% of the available range plus some retirements. We will probably get more facades next year. Only have one facade and the Pagoda so far cos we've been concentrating on obtaining the figurines first.
We mix and match some of the SOHK and Imperial as the mood takes us. We do have quite a large "tongue-in-cheek" display set in "Old Wanchai" that incorporates too many sets to mention here - but the theme is a somewhat "riotous assembly" with wine customers, bar-bill defaulters caught by Imp troops doubling as bar-room bouncers, old "Mama-San" Tsui-Tsi and her cohorts overseeing events and tallying up tonights takings, Ancient Egypt Girls doubling as Go-Go Dancers, Imp and SOHK musicians as "the Band" and the 4 ladies from the Imp Collection as the "Back-Up Singers". Oh and the concubine from the Imp Collection arriving in her Horse-Drawn Wagon for an audition as a Go-Go Dancer, with the Mother and Daughter from SOHK sitting in the Pagoda.
"See now, Yan-Yan, you stick in at your school lessons - and if you're lucky, you might end up getting a well-paid job like that".
Plus a time-travelling Nap Scottish Bagpiper charming the local ladies and adding to the general bedlam....!!!!
There's more but you get the general idea.:D:D:D:D

Rest of the ranges we collect are mine.
WW2:My main interest here is AFV's, but I like to add sets of figurines as they complement the vehicles so well.

Crusaders:Only have a few of these at present. Am considering having paint job conversions to depict Robert the Bruce and some of his lieutenants at the Battle of Bannockburn 1314. This is a long-term project/thought as there's other priorities at the moment.

FINALLY

Naps
Have around 60% of what's available with a few retirements. No multiples so far - but you know how that one goes. Intention is to collect the entire range.

EbAY and resale is the last LAST thing on my mind when I buy a set.

I take a look at the catalog of all the companies I am interested in and decide what lines I like based on my historical interests. I have my basement mostly dedicated to setting up "Major" and "Minor" dioramas- my majors are Omaha, WW2 Urban Assault, AWI, WW1 and some 1:18th stuff. Each major dio is done on a plywood sized table.

The minor dios are 6' w x 4' deep. I have several of these like Ancient Egypt, Greece, Samurai, Special Forces, WW2 Pacific theater, Personalities, etc, etc.

I cut out paper templates and arrange them on the table to represent the sizes of a phalanx, row of troops, tank crossing, etc, etc. I then purchases the pieces that I need to dress those paper templates out.

Some of these dios are progressing along further than the others. WW1 is waiting mostly for the KC expansion.

STANDS ALONE!!

Sounds like you have Disneyland in your basement Chris!.;)

I concentrate on ranges and companies:

K&C WW1, WW2, Egypt, Romans, Barbarians, few Asian pieces, few Crusaders. I mainly buy a piece I like, setup of mini dios for them until they are full. The World War pieces go into a curio for display, kind of like a museum, not much dio. I always felt like the armor stands alone due to it uniqueness for the most part. I will buy a few mounted CIvil War personalities.

Britains - Civil War, Rev War and Durbar (the best in my opinion of all).

Various Makes _ New Model Army (love this stuff), Figarti (unique), Frontline, Tradition, Reeves, all over the map.

Ebay - only when I realize I have duplicates (from upgrades) I don't need or I have given up on a range. I am a collector at heart, I always feel like it's better that more people enjoy the hobby than just me. SO, I don't buy multiples to sell on ebay at inflated prices as that makes it seem more of a business than a hobby. Now, that said, if a duplicate or discarded piece I sell on ebay gives me funds to reinvest, that's ok by me. I have a few rare K&C pieces I am holding back for trade instead of sale as I would rather go that route if possible.

I personally think what's going on with the current Jenkins pieces on ebay is ridiculous, these can be had from many dealers for issue price.

With regard to retired pieces, I have a backlog I would like to get, but some of the prices are crazy, I try to stick with what I really want and what I want to pay.

Anyhow, that's my story and I am sticking to it.

I am a student am on a very tight budget. I collect time periods that I study and when I think the figures are exceptionaly beautiful. I do regret starting the napoleonic range. I only did this so that I could get the dragoons that were being retired. I was working up to three and a half hours a day just so I could afford them (and I'm not even finished:()

I collect exclusively WW2 Waffen SS and LAH ranges. Presently, I'm working my way systematically through the LAH range and buying SS sets and vehicles as they become retired so I don't lose touch with them - but being new to the hobby, there's loads there, even in those two ranges, to keep me busy for quite a time yet - :D

I collect K&Cs Napoleonics and only them. In multiples. I've considered the John Jenkins but also think the prices are ridiculous. Besides I'm not really into the 'mascara' looking eyes on those figs. The K&C Naps are great to look at and a lot of fun to collect. Thanks Andy for the continuously good quality you produce.

Since I mainly collect Napoleonics....when a new regiment or unit comes out I will buy that regiment generally..25-28 figures suffice for Regiment in my displays. I have to add....I just LOVE the 42nd figures and the KGL.....I really should add a few more to these regiments before they are retired.

Sounds like you have Disneyland in your basement Chris!.;)

Rob

More like One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest!! :D It's a work in process, about 400 sq feet so it isn't as much room as some of these other guys have but I know I am privileged to have this space so I certainly don't complain. I share the space with my 3 kids who use the basement as a play area. My littlest one, Andrew, got hold of my Waffen SS 11 set and smashed the panzerschreck trooper off the basement floor- at least he is beating up the Germans and not the Americans :D. Funny thing is all my sets, including that one are stored in a glass display case and how he figured out how to get into it at 11 months is beyond me!!

Chris
As long as it is not like the writing room in the Shining you should be OK
Regards

Good question Ron!

I collect only figures I like, so I have not brought any entire range yet. I do not buy multiples unless they can be displayed in multiples; like marching figures, napoleonic line infantry, AWI, or guards. There is so much K&C I still want, why spend the money on repeats?

Since I hop back and forth I have some sets from K&C Dickens, Egyptian, Alamo, Rough Riders, British Ceremonials, WWI, most WWII lines, Special Forces, Civil War, The West, Crusaders, Saracens, Napoleonic, Silk Road, Imperials, and SOHK.

Hi Y"All. I collect eclecticlly?
Mostly NAP right now, followed by WW II, and then Rev. War.
I am fairly methodical keeping a wish list and up dating it periodically however the new stuff is coming out so fast I can't keep up. I had to sacrifice the 8th Army, and sell off my early Arnhem. Woe is me!
My fave' has to be the WW II vehicles speciallly the tanks.
Tanks alot y/all for leting me play on the forum.
O.C.

I collect the K&C WWII range. My favorites would be the Africa Korps along with Battle Of The Bulge. I will pick up different theatres of the war if it catches my eye and I like it. I really like the captured T-34. The oldest retired piece in my collection is the Patton Jeep.

I've always been a collector, since I can remember , I've always been collecting something.
Before K&C it was baseball, in the late ninties I discovered K&C and sold the vast majority of my baseball memorabilia and converted it into K&C where I never paid even retail prices, boy were those the good old days!
I would be considered an active "trader" on ebay, I sell alot and I sell a lot of K&C. I do this because I enjoy, I guess what you call the "Art of the Deal" and it allows me to continue to increase my collection. From time to time the shear mass of my collection gets to be too much and thats when i pick and choose what to sell. In K&C I've bought and sold nearly evrything they offer from Warbirds and glossies to all the present lines. For me the selling is healthy to remind me though I would love to have it all, it's only stuff and I can let it go to recenter whats really important in life. Don't get me wrong I'm really passionate about K&C!
I collect mainly WWII but also egypt, napoleon and the crusaders, I do buy multiples, not a lot, some for much later resale but mostly for conversion and repaint which is something I have lately found very satisfying .
Ray

K&C has been done an excellent work, one of the finest details products on the market today. I’ve been collecting since 2004, WWII figurines, mostly Germans.

Andy, bring some eastern front battles for 2008.

Cheers:)

Visit.
