For any of my non British friends from around the globe, a little background. We have in this country a TV 'Celebrity' called Jeremy Clarkson. He is both popular and notorious for his outspoken attitude. He does not believe in global warming and mocks enviromentalist's.He also recently caused outrage by saying that Lorry drivers spend their time changing gear and killing prostitutes.

He is in Australia at the moement with a live version of his Top Gear tv show(car programme). He is now causing fresh outrage after calling our Prime Minister a 'One eyed Scottish idiot'.Now don't get me wrong i'm not saying i am a supporter of Gordon Brown in anyway, but are we not going too far by mocking a person in public because of an affliction?.(Brown lost an eye as a child).I'm just wondering if this is a symptom of a growing 'Nasty society' or an example of the building up of 'Celebs' to a point where they think they are something special?.

I think it is a bit of both actually Rob, people nowadays generally don't give a monkeys about others. I also think in the case of celebrities it's also to create a buzz, after all they do say "there is no such thing as bad publicity".

Very true indeed.I just sometimes think that all sense of decency is disappearing, how long before someone with mental problems is mocked on the tv.Its all pretty sad i think.

This started years ago, with the Baby Boomer generation, in my opinion. Traditional morals and standards have just eroded to the point that more and more people who didn't notice before, are noticing now. Like watching a tide come in.

And before I get the usual replies from the Boomers among us, I do not mean that every single one of you flipped your parents off. It is a generalization, which expects, by definition, that there are specific exceptions. But it is still a handy and valid way of looking at something and describing it.

Jeremy Clarkson has the reputation of saying what most people are thinking. He is totally non PC, for which, in my opinion, he should be praised. He speaks out against the tide of stupid ideas with which we are constantly bombarded by the do gooders. He is castigated for refering to Gordon Brown as "A one eyed Scottish idiot". The fact remains that Brown does only have one eye, is Scottish and is an idiot. So JC gets in trouble for telling the truth. Doesn't seem fair does it?

I'm not sure the vast majority of lorry drivers would agree that he 'Tells it like it is';).Also i think we know don't we that he was mocking Brown for having one eye,yes he does have one but i think we know its an insult.

Trooper, I like your attitude! I mean it.
This PC stuff drives me crazy.

I'm with you 100% and I'm a boomer, you can lay the blame for the decline in western civilazation at there feet, totally narcasistic, global warming hoax, no judgements, the "we know better mentality" and we're going to make you live the way we think you should live.

You see i'm not pro PC,far from it.I just think common decency and standards are going out the window. This guy is a Dinosaur, mind you if you see the mindless juvenile stunts they get up to on the programme, you wonder what's up at the BBC!:D

Rob,
Is he the guy who wagered he could beat his friends across Japan driving souped up new Datsun(Nissan) and the friends on the Metro? He won by a hair .

I think we are all forgeting how hard could be the political mockery in the past, from Greece and Rome to more recent times.
This included mockery on the people afflictions, explicit sexual drawings and more....

In a similar spirit but different context, I recently heard of a text about :'how the current students were loosing the respect to their teachers. Respect that existed in the past'
I think that we would all agree with that today, me the first.
But this text was written in ancient Egypt !
So nothing new under the sun!

This is not to say I agree with this Jeremy Clarkson I've never heard of before
....and will probably never hard of again
....and will be happy with that

Actually i have just heard Clarkson has issued an apology to the Prime minister.

I'll admit I don't know the first thing about this chap, but I do agree with him on global warming, it is a complete and utter farce.

I live south of Boston Massachusetts and so far this winter, we are averaging about 10 degrees colder per day than last year, my heating bill for the winter has already passed last years mark with two months to go and the snowfall total past last years amount already as well.

Global warming is a joke, good for him to point it out..........

Well, now that I recall who he is, I thought he was fairly humorous, but rather on the rudy side, not that there is anything wrong with that. I would put the derogatory words down to the fact that Jeremy was far from home and feeling impervious to pain. He did apologize for those words, even though he may believe them. It's all about ratings.:(

While I do agree with you also where I live we are very close to breaking snowfall records and we certainly have had some of the coldests days/nights ever.
Global warming is a bit of a misnomer it actually means the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century

Whoa Nellie.....

This thread isn't threatening to turn into a Global Warming Debate, is it?

Sorry Peter  Feel free to delete my post, was just a progression of the conversation.

Well, to begin with I hate all this PC crap, these days it seems you can't say _hit even if you have a mouthful. What better way to draw attention to yourself then by going against the norm and being non-PC.

We also live in a society that actually discourages people from taking a good look at themselves and straightening out their own act by providing them with excuses as to why they did this or that wrong, they were abused, poor or came from a (I really hate this one ) dysfunctional family. Like who didn't? The Brady's? Why own up to anything you've done wrong when society provides and excuse for you?

OK:

Now that the warming trend of the second half of the 20th century has reveresed, apparently in connection with sunspot and other solar activity, I no longer worry that high temperatures will melt my toy soldier collection.

:D
