Hi All,
For those of you interested in displaying your figures in dioramas and scenic displays we will be giving a short clinic as we did last year in the Treefrog room. In addition to tips on using Hudson & Allen products we will have a question and answer period covering different display methods.

Hudson & Allen Products will be available at the Treefrog Treasures room. Hudson & Allen Custom built Dioramas and small scenics will be available in the Hudson & Allen Room. Over the next few days, we will be posting a few images of some of the scenics and dioramas we will have at the show.
All the Best,
Ken & Ericka

Hudson & Allen Studio... When it absolutely, positively has to look real.

Hello All,
The image above was a close-up of the groundwork and rockwork of an 11"x29" shelf diorama in fall colors. All of the work offered is suitable for multi-scale use. This image features W.Britain AWI Light Infantry for scale reference (figures not included). We understand the need for flat but realistic areas to accommodate the various manufacturers figure bases and we have engineered this into all of our bases. In the next few weeks leading up to the Chicago Show we will try to post more images. I am sure we will see some of you in either the Treefrog, W.Britains or Hudson & Allen rooms.
All the Best,
Ken Osen

Those autumn trees are magnificent, and that's the first diorama I've seen that actually does look real.

It absolutely, positively looks real! Wish I could see your stuff in Chicago, but haven't been there since I lived in Wheaton as a kid.:( Great job, as usual, Ken. Thanks, Mike

Hi All,
We have also posted a picture of another 11"x29" shelf diorama in the "Somewhere in Normandy, 1944" thread in the diorama section of the forum. We have really enjoyed creating these scenics, thank you for all your kind words!
Be good,

Awesome work! Do you know what days or the schedule for these diorama clinics.

The clinic will be on Saturday and may consist of more than one session. Last year's was so popular Ken had to come back later in the day and give it again since so many people wanted to attend.
The times of the clinics will depend on Ken's schedule but we will have the information posted in our rooms.
Looking forward to this!

Here is close up image of the groundwork, grass and weeds on another of the 11" X 29" shelf dioramas that will be available in the Hudson & Allen room at the Chicago show. I will talk about various scenic materials that are on the market and discuss when, where and how to use them to display your miniatures at the clinic in the Treefrog room on Saturday. More images to follow.

Here is the overall view of this 11" X 28" shelf diorama. (note that the earlier posts incorrectly stated a 29" length!)
We will have a fair number of custom one of a kind dioramas like this for sale. These will fit in any number of the widely available book and display shelves made by various companies. These are usually units sold as 30" wide with shelfs 11 to 12" deep. We looked at several manufacturers to find that the inside shelf length is usually around 28 1/2"...which is why we made them 28" long and 11" deep.
Many of these can be used together back to back to create a diorama 22" X 28", and then returned to the bookshelf to be displayed on two shelves. We have used a few King & Country infantry (not included) in this image for a scale reference.
See you soon,Ken

This image give you an idea of the overall size. The road is wide enough to accommodate a 21st Century Toys Tiger tank and even if the vehicle you display is wider it will compress the wild grass while it is in place. The grass will spring back after the vehicle is placed in a different location. Several of the other displays feature narrow country roads with trackways wagon width...images to follow soon.

As promised here is an image of an 11" X 28" base that is more suited to the eighteenth and nineteenth century North American landscape. Notice the real wooden Virginia snake rail fence, period corn and black eyed Susans. The road is a typical country lane with the proper spacing for wagons and artillery.

Here is the same base with W. Britain ACW Confederates for scale reference (figures not included). With the accuracy and quality of todays 54-62mm figures we really thought it would be nice to offer some scenics that would display these figures in a realistic environment.

Here are two 11" X 28" shelf bases 'book ended' back to back to form a diorama 22" X 28" They are designed to be displayed in this fashion, and also end to end to have a display 11" X 56" with the road winding along the middle ground of both bases. This could be a perfect way to show a column of infantry and artillery on the march. Thanks for looking.

Here is an image taken from a high angle to show how effective the resilient wild grass is in blending in the figures bases to the scene. When viewed at a lower 'you are there' angle they virtually disappear. The roads are almost flat even though they appear like tracks to accommodate figures walking in these areas. I have used Hudson & Allen 'forest litter' as a loose material on my home displays to minimize the bases too. The loose material can be used over when the diorama is rearranged.
The ACW Confederate Parrot gun and crew is a retired W. Britain set, two cheering Confederate Infantryman are also show in this image. A second Confederate Parrot gun and new crew will be offered in the 2009 1st Quarter catalog to add to the battery.
Thanks for looking!

Wow, Ken! At risk of repeating what's already been said, these are really amazing. You have to look twice to convince yourself these are not simply photographs of real world locations. Will you be doing any So. African looking landscapes for us Zulu collecting types?

I hope to have at least one base that will accommodate the new W. Britain Otto Witt home with enough room to add the mealee bag walls in front. I have my pre production samples here to work with for size and placement.
We have several new figure sets to add to the range this year, and a growing list of requests to consider for 2009, so scenic bases seem like a good idea.
Ken
