Hurricane Irene (1 Viewer)

Left Friday morning before Irene hit and made it home today. 14hrs of drive time with two little ones sure tests ones patience. I think we definitely made the right decision. News reports from where we stayed showed heavy wind, rain and flooding plus numerous power outages. Now I just need to find something to do for the remanding 5 days of vacation that I have. Hope everyone on the East coast makes it through Irene safe.
Glad you all made it home safely. Look at it this way, 14 hours in a car is bad enough, but if you all had stayed and been trapped inside during a storm with no power, with nothing to do, for a couple of days or more, would have been an insanity inducing scenario.{sm3} -- Al

We are finally getting a little rain and wind on the western end of the storm in central PA. Strange to see the clouds moving east to west.

It's 6:10 am here in South Jersey and am very much surprised that we still have electric and the internet. It has been raining since 10am yesterday but we haven't had the winds we were expecting. They had tornado watches in the counties west of us.I am sure we will have severe flooding problem as we had a storm a week ago that caused 20 million in damages. This thing should be out of here by 1pm.

Yes, winds aren't too bad over here, either, some limbs off trees. Elsewhere in the Valley, though, and down into Berks County towards Reading, there are a lot of power outages. Flooding is more the issue. We've had about 8 inches of rain so far, and the ground was already saturated. I've got some water in the basement, not too bad, but we're expected to get up to 8 inches more by the time the storm is passed. I'm trying to decide now whether to go to church, because of street flooding.

BTW We're still waiting for this thing to hit Gloucester.

I'm in Chester, NJ (about 30 miles west of Newark Airport)and I think the worst may have passed through. Heavy rain (but no power outage) and some minor flooding in the basement. Looks like South Jersey beaches got hit hard as are the beaches in Long Island.

I am up and all seems ok around here. The storm seems to have hit several areas up and down the coast quite heavily, but not around this area. All we got was wet. I'm waiting for "Pat in the hat" Collins to give me the local scoop about area damage but it seems power outages will be the major problem. We lost power for about 5 minutes, at 2:15 am (thanks to the wife for that info). All in all, after all this angst and panic, this area (Montgomery County, NW of DC) didn't see much. Hope others have the same luck we did, but the news is reporting 10 dead from the storm as it moved up the coast. Storm is now pounding New York area. Be safe, everyone. -- Al

We have no damage to the property and power, although it did go out at some point during the night as the clocks are flashing midnight. However, I have six inches of water in my basement. Power just went out and came back on again.

We have
mostly wind gusts now but there is quite a bit of road flooding and downed trees in my county.

We just took wooden furniture out of a storage room in the basement as it sometimes floods from the rain. Why does my wife think we need so many folding tables and chairs? My office/workshop/playroom is also down here but on the high side. WetVac/pump at the ready if the power stays on.

High tide here will be at around 11:00 PM, just when the storm is supposed to be. Glad my house is 30 feet or more above sea level and a few hundred yards from the shore. My 15 year old has anxiety problems because of her past heart surgeries so we're keeping her busy. She grew up with NEEEEWZZZ being part of the entertainment department instead of informational so I keep her updated from the NOAA site rather than TV.

My wife reports that her folks in Central NJ are o k. Sayreville etc.

Now that NYC has rain its the end of any coverage elsewhere,,if the media would just stop talking about power outages as all the lights are on behind them,,,my jaded perspective having spent a week trapped in the mad max world of ground zero at hurricane andrew ,,homestead fla 1992,,everyone armed in the wreckage of their homes,,the looters free to roam with no cops and NG anywhere,,no power for two months and the friends and neighbors to the north trying to get in with all the ten times the mark up generators ,,water,,etc they could haul.

Looks like it's all over here. Rain has almost stopped and there is some gusting. Now sure how the rest of Morris County fared. Hopefully ok. No damage or downed trees at my house. Will start to unpack things this afternoon.

I watched the CNN live news coverage of the storm hitting Lower Manhattan and Long Island, Sunday morning EDT. Fortunately, the reporters said the damage and flooding was not as bad as feared.

Sun is out, clear skies, it's a beautiful day. Perhaps the O's will get their double-header in after all. -- Al

Well, the pumps have already pumped about 3/4 of the water out of my basement (about 3 inches to go), and we have a call in to the oil company to get the boiler and hot water heater back up and running, so we will have weathered the storm without too much trouble.:wink2: My poor neighbors across the street, whose property ends in a sea wall right against the harbor, have about half their property under water, as the storm surge went a couple of feet over the sea wall.:redface2:

Hope everybody is well, certainly something we here don't ever experience. The Irene situation though prompted me to look up quite a few things about North Carolina and I must say I became fascinated about the Outer Banks (beach, islands, nature, plenty of exercise and History-you just got to love the Lost Colony story, where did they really go to?). Must be a very nice place to vacation, although we here in Portugal do have fine beaches... To me as an outsider downsides are of course things like Irene and for someone who loves swimming, rip currents and a chance (remote one?) of meeting a shark even if you are at 2 or 3 feet deep...{eek3}. Maybe swimming just at the pool might be advisable, and choosing July/early August if you can might be wise...^&grin.
Any comments?

All the best and stay safe there, looks like the worst is gone.

Paulo
