Came across a Coronation Coach. Appears to be 100% Hand painted. I can't tell the maker, unmarked. Also, has riders for the horses not pictured. Let me know your thoughts, unique and high quality. The only other item of note is it came in a plain white box with the description and "From Tracey's Collectibles" on it.

Re: Identification Help - Coronation coach, unknown maker

Tentatively, it looks like a repainted Britains to me. I looked in my copy of Opie's "The Great Book of Britains", on page 303, picture 511. It's a nice color image of the State Coach, and yours looks very much like that casting. But definitely repainted by someone many years later.

I suspect that "Tracey" painted the coach, or, contracted someone to paint it, and then packaged it for sale. The name suggests to me someone operating like so many others in or associated with our hobby as a sort of cottage enterprise-perhaps someone with a small shop or mail-order business, as Treefrog started out; perhaps someone who was a collector and made the leap to selling.

I don't know of any sets of molds available for a homecaster to cast his own. Of course, someone could have taken a commercial set and made his own molds, but that would be a huge effort. So this looks to me like a piece that was cast and originally painted by a toy soldier company, and then subsequently refurbished and boxed by someone else.

We'll see what others think, too,

Prost!

Definitely Wm Britains of sorts. The horses are not correct for that coach, these horses are the ones used in the State Landau Coach set. I agree with what The Baron has said. There was a guy many years ago that sold Britains recasts, I think he was in the UK so perhaps someone bought castings and had them painted? Either way nice find!

Scott, you remind me of a basic question to ask, which I had forgotten in my initial rush.

Tom, are the horses and the riders not pictured hollowcast or solid?

They are metal, but are hollowed out on underneath I think.

Thanks, Tom. I don't Britains ever made horses like that. There were plastic manufacturers who did, and these might be copies of such horses. Though I concede, there might have been some metal toy soldier makers who made theirs like that. So, it looks like Britains' coach, repainted, with horses from another maker replacing the originals. It definitely looks like a hobbyist's project to me, from what we have so far.

I take it that all the figures are hollowcast, too?

Prost!

Hiriart makes its horses with the bottoms hollowed out. Any chance these are Hiriart horses?

Right, the original were proper hollowcast figures, not cast with the undersides hollow underneath, correct?

Prost!
Brad

That is correct. I think some recast the originals and hollowed them out to save costs or make them easier to cast?

Re: Identification Help - Coronation coach, unknown maker

Yes, I don't think the horses originated with Hiriart, either. I haven't yet seen this particular casting among his horses.

Note, too, that the traces are painted on, and don't completely match the casting. Just behind the horses' front leg, we can see some cast detail that was just painted white. I think we've got a refurbished Britains coronation coach with horses from someone else's catalog. And I suspect that these horses were homecast with homemade molds.

It would be interesting to see the rest of what came in the box, too.

Prost!

figures are solid lead, heavy. Will take photos of horses in more detail.

I need to amend my thoughts on these. The horses are not hollowed, i got them confused with another set. All is solid, so this may be a repaint fully on Britains set. It is quite heavy and solid all the way around.

I think you are correct, they just different horses for this set which is weird?

Tom

Solid, as in solidcast, or, solid, as in, hollowcast with a complete underside?

If these are original Britains, so, hollowcast figures consisting of a complete shell, including their bellies, would they not be marked with Britains' copyright marks?

Prost!
