Can anyone help identify the two horses below please - and help with what they were made for/attached to? Found in a car-boot-sale - for £2-the pair.

There are no visible makers marks anywhere - and are clearly at the "toys" end of the spectrum.

They are "sort-of" around 54mm - or maybe a tad smaller - and are intact - but clearly well played with. They look as if they may have been pulling some sort of cart - due to the wear marks around the horse collars. Both are made from metal and appear to be hollowcasts.

My aim is to restore them - as they are nice little things - and maybe try to find the cart to complete the original piece - if possible.

Thanks for any advice - johnnybach

Hi Johnny

I think they could be from Johilco from their stagecoach or possibly Taylor and Barnet. Will keep looking but I think they came from the stage coach.

Hi Dave - thanks for the info on a possibility for the pair of horses. I have been scouring my books - but can't find them. Johillco is an interesting possibility, though I have never seen one of those. Does anyone out there have a photo of that item they could post?

Presumably then, there were more than two horses to pull a Stagecoach? Looks like my idea to restore just got harder! Should be fun trying though. ^&grin johnnybach

Hi again Dave - I had a snoop around the internet - and found this pic of a Johillco Stagecoach - with some chums -. Doesn't look like these are my pair of horses (which looking closer - COULD be mules???). Still - it's an idea to pursue - and if I could find a stagecoach - or maybe even make one up somehow - I could maybe use my pair for a scratch-build project. Will wait and see what turns up though. Interesting! jb.

Cracked it!!!

Dave - you were so nearly there! I couldn't let it go - so continued looking at the Stagecoaches theme - and I've found them! They are Crescent horses for their Western Stagecoach (see pics below). Mine are a different colour - but are quite clearly from the same mould - and yes - there are only two of them.

Okay then - next question - anyone know of a castings supplier that makes a Stagecoach - something like the one in the picture??

Many thanks Dave - you put me on the right track - and I will be able to get to sleep tonight now! Doncha just luv the Internet? ^&grin Johnnybach

Just can't leave it alone now! Have found the horses in Brown - whilst looking for the Stagecoach. I can just imagine what's coming next - I find the coach - then need the driver!! Here we go again! johnnybach

Hi Johnny,

Glad I was able to put you on the right track. I only have a black and white stick drawing of the stage coach to work with in my references so I couldnt tell is this one was correct. I am pleased you were able to find a couple of them in colour, very nice looking set.

I imagine you will be able to find a stage someone must make one or have one for sale. Its great to see something other than WWII stuff.

Looking forward to hearing if you find one for a future project.

Dave

Hi Dave - well - the pictures that I found also told me that this Crescent model dates from circa 1950 - so it's nearly as old as me. I found them stuffed under a table in a tatty cardboard box (along with a few interesting others) at a local boot sale in the UK. The guy there knocked them out to me for £5 for five horse figures - so at £1 each - I couldn't resist them.

I was hoping that they would have been from one of the old producers - as I could tell by the weight that they were hollowcasts. I'm as pleased as punch that they are Crescent - as I only have one other piece fro that long-gone marque.

Yes - I will be looking for a Stage-coach from now on - with maybe some cowboys and Injuns to chase it. I already have sufficient WW1 and WWII to kep me happy for a while - so why not have a punt at "something different" - especially at a pound a go! (so far).

You bet - if I find the right bits - it will be a modelling/painting project alright at some point.

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction - this Internet thingy is just wonderful - and I can hardly believe that 12 months ago - I was struggling to turn the darn thing on! Now I can search / save / copy / and photograph and post pictures with ease. Thanks Dave - and thanks Forum and all my other teachers on it! johnnybach
