I have been reading this forum for a while, so it’s probably appropriate that I introduce myself.

I stumbled across this site whilst looking for some references to figure kits made in the eighties and now stop and have a look through the threads most days. I also blame this site for a recent affliction to the “glossy” finish, something of an anathema to an old school plastic modeller.

I was a kid in the eighties and cut my teeth making Tamiya, Italeri, Airfix and the like 1/35th kits. I also made a few metal kits (Hinchliffe, Valiant, etc) although these were never that accessible in Australia to a teenager. I also painted a few 25mm wargames figures, but came to the conclusion that they are too small.

Like most young men I gave up military modelling as I started working and studying. Fast forward to the birth of my first child a few years back and I found myself looking for something to do in those spare few moments you get when baby is asleep. I bought a few Dragon kits and noticed that making figures was pretty relaxing.

So in the last few years when I get a bit of spare time I paint or put together a kit. I also ferret around e-bay and the like looking for older British and American white metal 54mm kits and old figures. I have stripped and re-painted a few, so you could call me a recycler. Bear in mind that some of the older sculpts still hold up well.

This forum has recently driven me in the direction of 54mm plastics and I have painted a few figures lately with a glossy finish. They seem good value for money and I’m not afraid to let my young bloke play with them. I can always repaint them!

Eras- I like Colonial, First World War, ACW and recently American Revolution.

So there you go! I may ask the experts to identify a few figures for me a little later.

Thanks for the kind welcome gents.

I had noticed that there are a few fellow Aussies about.

Louis, I agree it is a good hobby to share with kids and my young bloke likes watching the painting process. I think it takes his attention more than playing with figures at this point in time. However he is rapt in the Lego 'Toy Story' soldiers, which I guess are toy soldiers regardless.

It will be interesting to see if he does become interested in the hobby over time. There seem to be many more 'instant' options for kids these days. Looking back two things I gained from modelling were patience and the ability to research. I'm not sure X-box builds those skills!

Scott,

I have only one rule that I enforce strictly even in the face of opposition from my wife: there are no video games allowed in my home. Period. I have too many nephews who have grown fat sitting on their butts playing video games when they should be outside playing for real, or inside doing their homework. If my wife ever brought one home, I would stomp it to bits and she knows it.
