Inglourious basterds (2 Viewers)

I heard Michael Medved review the movie Friday on his show, and it doesn't sound like something I'd care to see.

The plot was already handled pretty well in the novel and movie of "The Dirty Dozen" (elite commandos go behind German lines, to kill). This just sounds like another dose of gratuitous and graphic violence from Tarantino, masquerading as cinematic genius. The emperor has no clothes.

I'm not squeemish and can handle violence in movies when it is for historical accuracy or getting acrosss a profound message.

this movie was strictly "gratuitous violence". I just don't get violence as entertainment.

Don't waste your money....
Just watch the news if you need to see violence!

It's far from Tarantino's finest but it's definitely not "the worst film ever" by a long chalk. There are some brilliant scenes delivered by very fine scripting and directing plus being well handled by the actors (not from Pitt though).

The first scene of the French farmer receiving an unwelcome visit from the charming but chilling SS officer Colonel Hans Landa is seriously impressive-especially when the camera drops below the floor-boards to show a Jewish family hiding. For real sustained menace on screen I've not seen better!

But it's a Tarantino film so expect lots of exactly what you expect from him-over-indulgence; lots of nods to classic movies; plenty of violence; great scripted scenes; some fine acting and a stupid ending.....and thoroughly enjoyable.....it's Tarantino's version of a spaghetti western only this time Once Upon A Time In Occupied Europe!

I would have to totally agree with this. I thought overall it was a good flick. The opening scene with Hans Landa is fantastic. IMO the movie does have a Dirty Dozen tone but I thought the ending of the movie was somewhat similar to the ending in the first Indiana Jones flick ala, things on fire, the girls face melting on screen and the Nazis getting it in the end. Just a thought.

Keep it silly

Frankly, having seen the trailer, I can't wait to see this movie. I like a little gratuitous violence in my movies, as opposed to in real life, and any movie where Hitler buys the farm is allright by me.

Anyone seeing this and expecting a traditional WWII flick is surely naieve. Its Quentin Tarantino for goodness sake!

He makes superb films, IMO - violent yes, but always highly original with great stories and clever dialogue. He constantly keeps you guessing as to what is coming next. Everything, even the violence, is well thought out and NOTHING is gratuitous.

Certainly Tarantino is not everyone's taste. But if you "get" him and how he is nearly always communicating on multiple levels with the audience, you have to appreciate his craft.

Bottom line: The guy makes very entertaining movies --- which is exactly why I pay my $10!

Well movies are for the audience and the audience depends on the movie. Tarantino is not a director I care for and I think his craft is the the realm of taste. There were parts of Kill Bill that were indeed well done and other parts that left me cold, my taste I freely admit. I will probably get to this one (likely on Blu-ray) some bachelor night but I am not holding my breath to see it.

I must agree with Bob though, I seriously doubt it is the worse movie ever; there are sooooo many choices for that.

Personally I dont view violence as "entertainment"....
Yes, Tarantino has a style and flair for cinematography. His audiences may appreciate the dialog and clever story telling. I enjoyed parts of Kill Bill 1 and Pulp Fiction. Maybe if he deleted some of the excessive blood and guts he could be more creative and artistic. He knows that violence sells just like the video game makers know. He pumps his movies up with this violence to sell tickets.....that's gratuitous!
My son and some of my friends love his movies. I guess I am just fed up with blood, guts and limbs being thrown around. This may sound funny for a guy who collects toy soldiers but I view the hobby as a combination of history, art and a connection with my youth.
I just watched Bridge Over the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia for a little bit of nostalgia. they didnt need the gore to tell the story.

I have seen it and not as good as I was expecting but worth the ticket. The German guy was excellent. Much more of a dialogue movie than action.

Just saw it and was pleasantly surprised. I went in thinking it was going to be pitiful and over the top gruesome but it really wasn't. Its just a story so don't expect a historically correct documentary. I agree the SS Col. Landa was outstanding, kind of a German detective Colombo/Sherlock Holmes! The many dialogue scenes around the dinner table are REALLY TENSE and intelligently written. Pitt's role really isn't central, its more of an ensemble cast. Worth a looksee. :)

This one is on my list. I like unconventional war stories...The other day I watched the Eagle Has Landed with Michael Caine, Rober Duvall and Donald Sutherland. It's about a Nazi plan to kidnap W. Churchill in England during his vacation. A little bit weak on credibility and sometimes acting but nevertheless entertaining...

"....This film, made when the invasion of Britain was a real possibility, shows what might have happened if the Germans sent an advance force disguised as British soldiers. One expects, in a highly praised wartime drama that's been called brutal, that the Jerries are going to be pretty nasty. But what gives this film its incredible punch, its real power to shock, is in how the ordinary British civilians fight back. ..."

You can get it on NETFLIX

Thanks, added that one to my NetFlix list. One other war movie I liked is Black Book (2006) - Director Paul Verhoeven.
