Lots of interesting results this weekend in international rugby.
Not much discussion.

Well things move on
Springboks vs All Blacks in Auckland on Saturday
Both teams currently unbeaten.
Last Springbok victory there was in 1937.
I visited Eden Park last December
Quite an atmospheric venue
Should be a good test.
Tally Ho

All gone mostly to form in the matches, so far. Perhaps of most interest ( to me, anyway) - seem to be the new innovations. Scrummaging procedure seems to be a vast improvement over the last one. I was getting mightily fed-up with constant collapsing - and the lottery of the ref deciding who was to blame!

Also the use made by the ref of the Television Match Official (TMO)- to look at anything on the big screen that may include foul play - and to check out anything he's unsure of. That's another good development in my opinion. As these procedures develop - it will be interesting to see how the game progresses. Don't want it slowed down too much by checking EVERY minute detail.

The last fun thing, I think - has been the antics of Heynecke Meyer - in the SA box! He certainly shows his enthusiasm!!! jb

Yes I think the new scrum laws are an improvement. Some say it favours the more physical scrums. As you know the Springboks are not really shrinking violets in that department. Will see what happens on Saturday.
I fancy our chances but the All Blacks are the All Blacks

SA are playing well - and the Blacks are without two key players in Dan Carter and their Talisman Ritchie. Best chance for a while - so it could happen. I like the way both teams have been playing - so it could/should be a cracker! jb

Oh well a bridge too far for the springboks. Well done All Blacks

That's a very sporting way of handling it Damian - and it does you credit to take it that way.

I'm neutral - but I thought that the result was influenced very heavily by a very poor performance from the referee - which isn't the first time that this has happened in NZ.

After a TMO referral by the ref (French) of a suspect tackle - which found no foul play had occurred from the TMO official - the same ref bizarrely handed out a yellow card to the SA player, for a foul tackle! (Huh?????). Repeated showings of the tackle on the big screen appeared NOT to confirm this diagnosis.

Fast forward to later in the game.......Another yellow to the same player in the match (correctly, this time) - meant that under the current rules he was red-carded - and took no further part in proceedings, with his side being reduced to 14 players.

The rest is history. At this International level, as most of us know, sides who play the rest of the game with one less player are at a huge disadvantage - and - yet again - this showed in the final result.

So - yes - well done NZ - but VERY hard luck on SA - who didn't deserve that - and neither did we - the viewers - of a very poorly refereed match.

I think that we all deserve better than that - and it's about time the IRFU sorted out poor refereeing - and did something about it! johnnybach

Great thread guys, yeah the AB & Springbok clash was gearing up to be an epic battle, but the ref's decision in the 15th minute overshadowed the match and ultimately influenced the final outcome. Such poor refereeing at this level of the game is not on and it's hard to fathom why he got it so wrong.

I still think the AB's had the edge, but the Boks played well and made them work for it. I still think the uncertainty around scrum's needs to be sorted too, things got messy with all the resets and collapses, which slows the game.

Overall a good result for the AB's, apart from losing Carter, but a disappointing performance from the ref almost wrecked the game. I'd certainly be pissed if I was a SA supporter.

The All Blacks remain the best team in world rugby. Pity these decisions get in the way of a good game
Always amazed how well the All Blacks do for such a small country.
Visited NZ last year and enjoyed Auckland.
Great place and great people.
Looking forward to the next test in SA.

Thanks Damian, yeah for a county with little over 4 million people we don't do half bad. As you know rugby's a passion here and the national game, although there are a few other sports nipping at the heals of rugby fans now. I think one of the biggest strengths with rugby here is it's depth of talent. Hansen's been exposing some new blood into the AB's to give them a taste and the young guns didn't do too badly, during last Saturday's test.

Pleased you enjoyed your stay in Auckland and hope you got to see some of the rest of the country?

I see the 'powers at be' have finally dropped du Plessis's red card, which will make him available for the tests against Australia & the All Blacks, however the second yellow card will remain.

Cheers!

I see that after a post-match review, the IRB has confirmed that the first yellow card awarded by the ref to De Plessis was incorrect. This means that the red-card awarded after a foul by the same player would also be incorrect.

Unfortunately - this won't change the fact that the SA team played one man short for ten minutes in the first half - and a permanent man short for most of the second half..............or the somewhat predictable result of the match.

I wait to see if that's all that comes out of the IRB review - but I somehow doubt anything else will happen - it never does!

Very poor refereeing of two very professional sides - and (so far) a poor show from the IRB - once again. Johnnybach

Well it is all set up for a humdinger of a final next week in Johannesburg.
I am sure the All Blacks will have fond memories of Ellis Park.
Hopefully the current Bok team can conjure up the spirit of the 1995 team or at least find that waitress who poisoned the hamburgers.

Looking forward to this one - and just hoping the ref is up to it this time. However, SA MUST win with a bonus point - and deny NZ a loser's bonus point - because of the "Red Card" loss last time. A big ask!

On the "good news" front - I read that Alain Rolland is to retire from International refereeing at the end of the season. He was (mostly) okay, I s'pose - except for one very special and infamous straight red-card decision - which ruined a World Cup ( IMO). And not just for me - but for the many friends I have in NZ too.

Goodbye Alain - and NOT Au Revoir, I hope. johnnybach

NO chance.................^&grin

Yes the Boks will be very comfortable at Ellis park and the AB's will need to pull out all the stops to grab this one. Discipline will be the key for both sides, particularly with the Bok's prepared to run at players opposed to around them. Of course the ref's will need to do their part and after their last clash at Eden Park the SA crowd won't put up with any dodgy decisions.......and then there's the mystery waitress.:wink2:

Great game
Best side won.
Boks look like they are on the up.
So the world cup will be interesting

Cheers Damian, have recorded the match, which I'll be watching shortly, unfortunately the wife's clock radio went off right at news time this morning and I heard the result:mad:.....nearly biffed the bloody thing out the window^&grin

Great game to watch - helped to keep flowing by the World's best ref, who really took charge in a positive way - Nigel Owens.

Is it just me - or does a ref who can speak the language of BOTH sides help to explain WHY he has given a decision - to the captains of both sides. There were numerous instances of this yesterday - which you just don't get from some of the other refs - who sometimes seem to have trouble articulating even the simpler words used in the game??

I think that the IRB should give FAR greater thought to WHO they use for top games like this one. Yesterdays game was a spectacle to watch - in no small part aided by a superb refereeing display.

Well done by BOTH sides - a magnificent advertisement for the game - and a treat to watch.

Just my thoughts. Cymru am byth - Johnnybach

Well the Springboks could not do it and the Wallabies have also been shrugged off.
Who if anyone is going t o stop this All Black Team.
Obviously they are number one by quite a margin.

Number 1 now mate but they won't win the next world cup,a ageing squad.
