Into the Valley (1 Viewer)

Steve, you perfectly captured how stupid the French were. Chris

Excellent scene. Waiting on my French Command to arrive.

Cheers guys ! :salute::

The Bigeard command set was worth waiting for sure and has nice accessories.

Chris yes the French certainly made fatal errors with choosing an overlooked valley and underestimating the extremes the Viet Minh would go to to win whatever the human cost.
Looking forward to TG evolving this series. It's probably not being released as quickly as those interested in it would like what with Covid, lock downs in China, Air and Sea Shipping issues though and probably just as well with the poor foreign exchange here putting prices up along with everything else constricting peoples budgets at present !

Steve,

Really good set up here!! I love the perspective, especially with the figure on the far left standing as if he's on the downside of the hill.

Great job.

Steve,
Yes, an excellent scene that captures the strategic error.

Strategic error? Who could have expected that a base located in a valley surrounded by higher hills/mountains and almost impossible to resupply adequately would turn into an artillery trap that would lead to a major military disaster? Give the French a break, after all they were still reeling from 1870, 1914-18, and that military high point of 1940.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Neat diorama Steve! It's nice to see all of the Indochina figures displayed together.

Yes the figures released so far, will all work well together in various scenarios.

Hopefully TG will be releasing more French and the Viet Minh before the year is out.

Really nice work, Steve. The backdrop is perfect!

Really nice figures.

Dien Bien Phu is a fascinating battle and you display them well.

Maybe it’s my age, but given the title, I’m surprised no’one picked up on the song by ‘The Skids’!!

Thanks Bridport
Funny I had it running through my mind as I chose the title ! Maybe at sometime on another dio I'll use Working for the Yankee Dollar ^&grin

The French certainly made a strategic mistake, but it's easy to judge later. They could not have imagined that the "coolies" would quickly carry the artillery through the jungle, piece by piece, and mount it on the top of inaccessible mountains ... It seems to me that in the same country the Americans also made some little strategic mistakes some time later... As for the 1914-18 war, I don't think the French lost, do they? It seems to me that they have won together with their allies ..

The French were certainly on the winning side in WW1, but the 'victory' ruined them, causing such destruction and casualties that many historians feel they never have recovered from WW1, leading in part to the disasters in WW2, Indo-China, and Algeria. French losses in WW1 amounted to 1.5 million dead and some several million more in wounded and disabled, all based on a relatively small population of 35 million (pre-war). French losses were the largest among the Allies, with the exception of Russia, and even then French losses were a much higher percentage of the overall population. So, yes, the French won, but it was a victory that was much too costly for them. -- Al
