Hello Treefroggers!
Here's my second 54mm metal figure. The first shot is in natural light w/ a scenic background. The second pic is with flash. I'm sure enjoying painting! It's so exciting to find a new way to enjoy the hobby. I hope you enjoy the pics. I'm just about finished with a my third figure as well, a wonderfully sculpted Viking. I'll post pics upon completion.

Great job you've done there. I also find it very rewarding painting your figures. Next step would be casting your own.

Oliver

You just started painting?Very good.
Mark

Mark,
Thank you! Yes, I just started painting metal figures a few months ago. Prior to that I practiced on Conte and TSSD plastics. I painted several Conte WWII GI's, some Vikings a few TSSD WWII Russians, and a dozen or so TSSD ACW and learned a lot throughout the process. I stopped painting plastic figures for awhile, but didn't put the brushes completely down. I started doing a lot of figure repairs for myself and others. I repaired a lot of St Petersburg figures. The confidence gained from that propelled me into finally deciding to paint my first 54mm metal figures from head to toe. This is my 2nd figure. There's another thread with my first figure, a German knight w/ crossbow. It takes me forever to paint a figure, but it's a lot of fun. I just really take my time and try to relax and enjoy it. It's a lot of fun breathing life into a monochrome casting. Thanks again, Joe

Oliver,
Thank you! I'm really enjoying this. I'm so glad I stopped studying so much about painting, and finally decided to really jump in, like that old Nike commercial ("just do it"). Maybe some day I'll move into casting my own, but for now I'm having too much fun with painting. I've all but completed my third figure, a Viking in battle. I just need to do some touch ups and sealing. Then I'll shoot some pics and post 'em. Thanks again, Joe

Hi Joe. Congrats on a beautiful paint job and looking forward to seeing the Viking. One small caveat re title of the thread. The Romans never actually made it to Ireland! The nearest they got was to Britain. In fact the Celts had to go over there to kidnap St Patrick!!! Maybe that's what this guy is at?!! In any event, it still takes nothing from your fine piece of work! Regards, Colman

Thank you very much Colman! I don't know if the Romans made it to Ireland or not, however a lot of folks out there think they did. If they did it certainly wasn't anything like their conquests of various other nations, of course. But the discovery at Drumanagh is very interesting indeed along with strangely distributed Roman artifacts at other locations. Stranger still none of these Roman artifacts have been found in association with native materials. Among other interesting tidbits there have been Roman style burials and cemeteries found in Leinster, and the list goes on. Some interesting theories have been postulated, but I am far from a student of the subject, but do know there seems to be a lively debate about whether or not the Romans set foot on Ireland.

Hi Joe. Nice to hear from you.

Interesting subject...

Although we have artefacts, as you mention, they are generally agreed to be the product of either trade or plunder. As far as I know, no Roman military hardware has ever been located in Ireland nor is there any evidence of any physical Roman settlement. Britain, on the other hand, is full of such evidence. Most tellingly perhaps is that nowhere in the copious Roman written accounts of their conquests and colonisations is there any reference to having come to Ireland. That said it would be an exciting archaeological discovery were such evidence to be discovered but it is considered unlikely.

However we did get St Patrick out of them and look how he's lasted not to mention the names Hibernia and Scotus.

All the best from the Emerald Isle!

Colman
