The media this side of the Irish Sea appear to be incensed by the manner of the Republic of Ireland not qualifing for the World Cup in South Africa in 2010 but it appers it's nothing close to the upset it has caused in Eire!

Thierry Henry has caused a bit of uproar, for example a website was set up today dedicated to villifying the man and the Irish President is reported to make mention of the foul deed to the French President when they meet next!

Didn't two Latin American countries go to war over football match?

And i dont blame the Irish i cant believe the "French"have got away with cheating AGAIN.

The BBC news had a piece that a movement has formed to boycott anything French from wines, cheese and restaurants to letters and kissing!

What is all the fuss about? I do not follow WC football so I do not know what happened. How did the French cheat? -- lancer

Neither do i but it was all over the news,a deliberate handball resulted in a goal in the dying minutes wham Ireland out of world cup.

I realise the passion that people have for their countries and football teams, but please let us remember where we are and refrain from bashing the French (or Irish).

i think they should play another game, maybe just this extra time and if there is no winner than 11m should decide.
I do not mind if the France win or Ireland just let it be fair game.Let the better team win, that is all.
I think all the blame must go to the referee, because there is no chance to believe that player himslef will stop the game when he touch the ball with the hand, but referee must(and he didnt-so he is the one to blame!)

Thanks for the clarification, all. As you might imagine, this incident did not receive much coverage in the Wash. DC area. I recall the story but it was brief and I missed it. It is obvious that missed calls exist in every sport and that refs, as long as they are human, will continue to miss them. It is a shame that the game could be decided by such a blown call. US sports are trying to address this problem through the use of instant replay. Perhaps something similar could be worked on for football overseas. My condolences to the Irish. -- lancer

It's pretty disgraceful. The match should be replayed. Even the French would have to admit the Irish got jobbed. The French are not a very good team and may not last too long.

I did not see the game or the video clip. If it happened as most of you are saying, it's wrong.

Having said that every Sunday I see NFL players get away with clear cheating (those slow motion replays help a lot). I've never seen a player run up to the referee saying his touchdown should be disallowed because he didn't really catch the ball-trapped it, or because he had a foot out of bounds.

I'm not so sure about my previous comment now. I just went to the BBC News and watched an interview about this.

If I were a French player, I'd sure hate to be showing up for the World Cup Tournament.

I don't think you should blame the French here but the referee who granted the goal following Henry's handball...

Surely you jest. He deliberately guided the ball with his hand. I was a fan of his when he was a Gunner but he has sullied his reputation and that of France for all time.

I see that the Irish have requested a replay. For so blatant a call I hope it is granted.

Again, I didn't say he didn't do it. He even admitted it in front the press afterward. There were 3 referees on the field who should have caught it...A replay should put this issue to rest.

I agree, what a poor professional and what a bad role model for kids wanting to play the game.Such a disgrace, the guy should be so ashamed of himself and the French football authority should offer to give their place to Ireland,as it looks like FIFA will not allow a replay.

We can blame the Ref for not seeing it,but that was human error and not blatant cheating that the Frenchman employed.

Come on guys, do you believe that any player, from any nationality, if he by instinct helps the ball with his hand, at the final minutes of a game that is going to decide if your national team is going to the World Cup, is going to go to the ref and say: «I am so sorry ref, but you must disallow the goal because I played handball»:D:D:D? I am not saying it is right but at this stage of this professional game it is just not going to happen anywhere! Years ago there was an incident involving Robby Fowler from Liverpool, something like a penalty or goal wrongly given by the ref, benefiting Fowler and Liverpool. Something really odd happened, Fowler came to the ref and said his decision was wrong, but the ref stood by his decision! I remember Fowler's team mates later implied, though politely, that he was being naive, it was just one of those Fowler things:D. It is just the way it is for now! This remind's me of Maradona's hand of god against England, another shocker!
How to change things: use technology, something like what happens in tennis. The teams might challenge a number of capital decisions by the ref, involving goals or penalties and there would be a video or cyclops replay. I believe this would be essential to avoid games being spoiled like this one. Oh, and another thing, even it the Irish had won 1 nil it would have gone to a penalty shootout, let's just keep or feet on the ground on this one;).
IMHO.

Thats all very well, but its HERE that the French football authority should stand up and be counted. Are they proud that their team will now be in the World Cup as a result of cheating??.Can French football fans hold their heads up at the final?.You give these examples of how its happened before, but that doesn't make it ok.All those Irish footballers.their support staff and their fans hopes and efforts have been destroyed by such blatant cheating it beggars belief. There should be a system to overturn match results in situations like this and to replay.

I understand the point you are making about the player talking to the ref,but its here we need football associations to have integrity and own up to whats happened, and its possible France would have won a replay anyway.I only say all this Paulo as it does all seem so unfair on the Irish who came so close to getting to the finals, the scenes of disbelief on the streets of Ireland are amazing!
