Thats all very well, but its HERE that the French football authority should stand up and be counted. Are they proud that their team will now be in the World Cup as a result of cheating??.Can French football fans hold their heads up at the final?.You give these examples of how its happened before, but that doesn't make it ok.All those Irish footballers.their support staff and their fans hopes and efforts have been destroyed by such blatant cheating it beggars belief. There should be a system to overturn match results in situations like this and to replay.
I understand the point you are making about the player talking to the ref,but its here we need football associations to have integrity and own up to whats happened, and its possible France would have won a replay anyway.I only say all this Paulo as it does all seem so unfair on the Irish who came so close to getting to the finals, the scenes of disbelief on the streets of Ireland are amazing!

Yes, if this had happened to Portugal I would be mad too. So I am simpathetic to the Irish although I believe neither they nor anybody should go to war against France on this. As I said, the only way to avoid this would be through instant replays that solve the matter on the moment. To me it is very hard to understand why the rules are not changed to allow this, we wouldn't be having all this if something as simple as using the replay had been in place. Replaying the game would probably be a fair decision, but I believe that won't happen because there are no precedents and it would also set a precedent for thousands of games worldwide to be replayed. Instant decision and instant challenge is what this sport needs right away, just like tennis.
Paulo
The Fifa ruled out a replay of the match.
That is ridiculous. Something that obvious, with everybody involved agreeing that it was "hand", and still they stay to their rules that a game is over and done once the referee has said so.
I don't think that it helps the sport at all and I am pretty sure that the French Team will not feel comfortable walking on the field next year in South Africa.

well said,i can imagine the french players wanting to win like that.
Rob
can you?
Guys,
Just to add a bit more spice to this discussion.
Don't forget that FIFA and UEFA also changed the rules of the play off qualifications because there was the risk of the larger teams meeting and knocking each other out. They therefore agreed that France and Germany should be seeded so as to avoid each other.
Now when you consider that Michel Platini (French) and Sepp Blatter (German)are the respective Senior guys in UEFA and FIFA it becomes even more conspiratorial.
Makes the Election of the EEC President seem tame.
By the way Rugby Union seems to get by pretty well with Video refs but only if the Match referee asks for specific law violations to be checked, and only around actual try scoring, so even then there can be human error.
Famous saying for retired referees
" I used to be decisive but now I'm not so sure"

Read it again,it says cannot.
Unfortunately, it's true that FIFA wants the big countries in there. That is what people like to see. I understand that but Ireland got shafted anyway.
Yo Troopers, being English/Irish, still havn't got over the HAND OF GOD incident with Argentina, now this happens. Blatter & Platini are a pair of crooks, and are always on about fair play, neither of them no the meaning of the word, changing the play off rules to seed Germany & France so they couldn't meet in the play offs. Not only is Thierry Henry a cheat he is also a LIAR, said the ball hit his hand, when we all saw the close up replays, that he stopped the ball then pushed it forward so he could lob it into the goal area. BTW never did like the French dont know why we bothered saving their butts in WW11 they hate the English, never got over all the defeats we handed out to them over the centuries, just a bunch of losers & cheats.
Bernard.

There is no cheating in rugby union.
It is a game for hooligans played by gentlemen.
