Irish eyes aren't smiling (1 Viewer)

I agree completely with what Rob said. Players are always looking for an edge and don't care if they cheat, e.g., illegal substances.

That doesn't mean, however, that FIFA or UEFA shouldn't do the right thing.

Thats all very well, but its HERE that the French football authority should stand up and be counted. Are they proud that their team will now be in the World Cup as a result of cheating??.Can French football fans hold their heads up at the final?.You give these examples of how its happened before, but that doesn't make it ok.All those Irish footballers.their support staff and their fans hopes and efforts have been destroyed by such blatant cheating it beggars belief. There should be a system to overturn match results in situations like this and to replay.

I understand the point you are making about the player talking to the ref,but its here we need football associations to have integrity and own up to whats happened, and its possible France would have won a replay anyway.I only say all this Paulo as it does all seem so unfair on the Irish who came so close to getting to the finals, the scenes of disbelief on the streets of Ireland are amazing!

Rob

Yes, if this had happened to Portugal I would be mad too:mad:. So I am simpathetic to the Irish although I believe neither they nor anybody should go to war against France on this:D. As I said, the only way to avoid this would be through instant replays that solve the matter on the moment. To me it is very hard to understand why the rules are not changed to allow this, we wouldn't be having all this if something as simple as using the replay had been in place. Replaying the game would probably be a fair decision, but I believe that won't happen because there are no precedents and it would also set a precedent for thousands of games worldwide to be replayed. Instant decision and instant challenge is what this sport needs right away, just like tennis.

:D Yes War would be an overreaction!.Although on the tv last night Irish people said they would be boycotting French Wine,Cheese etc!

Football sure is one of those sports that grips nations isn't it!.

The Fifa ruled out a replay of the match.
That is ridiculous. Something that obvious, with everybody involved agreeing that it was "hand", and still they stay to their rules that a game is over and done once the referee has said so.
I don't think that it helps the sport at all and I am pretty sure that the French Team will not feel comfortable walking on the field next year in South Africa.

Well said,I cannot imagine the French players wanting to win like that.

Guys,
Just to add a bit more spice to this discussion.
Don't forget that FIFA and UEFA also changed the rules of the play off qualifications because there was the risk of the larger teams meeting and knocking each other out. They therefore agreed that France and Germany should be seeded so as to avoid each other.

Now when you consider that Michel Platini (French) and Sepp Blatter (German)are the respective Senior guys in UEFA and FIFA it becomes even more conspiratorial.
Makes the Election of the EEC President seem tame.

By the way Rugby Union seems to get by pretty well with Video refs but only if the Match referee asks for specific law violations to be checked, and only around actual try scoring, so even then there can be human error.

Famous saying for retired referees
" I used to be decisive but now I'm not so sure";)

well yes the FIFA say that they will not replay the match but thisis unfair because it will not be the first time if they replay a match.
I remmember in year 2005 the match was replay against Uzbekistan and Bahrain for the qualification for the world cup 2006 or something like that.Well anyway they did replay this match (Uzbekistan-Bahrain) so why they do not wannt to replay this one.Maybe because Michel Platini is a head master in Uefa or Fifa?
And yes i wonder too why the refere do not have a chance to watch a replay and than act acording to replay like in ice hockey when the referee go to watch the replay on tv and than he decide it.

i think sepp blatter is from switzerland but i see your point!

Unfortunately, it's true that FIFA wants the big countries in there. That is what people like to see. I understand that but Ireland got shafted anyway.

Yo Troopers, being English/Irish, still havn't got over the HAND OF GOD incident with Argentina, now this happens. Blatter & Platini are a pair of crooks, and are always on about fair play, neither of them no the meaning of the word, changing the play off rules to seed Germany & France so they couldn't meet in the play offs. Not only is Thierry Henry a cheat he is also a LIAR, said the ball hit his hand, when we all saw the close up replays, that he stopped the ball then pushed it forward so he could lob it into the goal area. BTW never did like the French dont know why we bothered saving their butts in WW11 they hate the English, never got over all the defeats we handed out to them over the centuries, just a bunch of losers & cheats.

well that is not completely true.My country who have only 2 million people play against Russia who have 200+ million people and we beat them,so now my country go to the world cup.Referee are very good in both games(Moscow,Maribor). They make a little mistakes but they didnt cheat no team. And they let that th efootball win,no matter how big country you come from.On the field there is 11 against 11.So in that case they didnt favour a Russia even if they are the biggest country in the world, they have players like Arshavin,Pauljucenko,Zirkov,Anjukov,Zirjanov,Bilaledinov,....and coach Guus Hidink. They are just not good enough and my country go to the world cup.
I will repeat that i think the referee is the blame in France against Ireland, not the French.Let be honest,if the game is oposite do you honestly think that one of Ireland players will stop the game and go to the referee and say"i touch a ball with my hand and you should give me yellow card or even red card, and there is no goal"?
No one will say that,it is a game, and everyone wannt to win an dthe stake is very big.It is just happened, what is happened and the refereee is the one for blame. What do you think Thiery Henry need to do?Stop playing football, kill himself,...?He touch the ball and refere must punished him in the game, but he didnt why not?Ask the refere. Not blame the French, they just fight the better they can and they use tricks, but the refere is the one that alow this tricks.I see a lot of football game and there is a lot of pinching,shoufling,kicking,...i do not say this is right but the referee is the one who have power to stop that.
And yes i am thinking that they need to play a re-match.There was a game in 2005 between Uzbekistan and Bahrain and the FIFA allow a re-match so i do not understand why they do not allow this time.I think Ireland need to use all the power they have that this game must be repeated.I am sure all the countries in the world will support you,so go on the streets, make a preasure on the FIFA,fight for your rights(i know French people will do that if the thing is oposite,so why you not)?
I am happy that my country is go to the World cup and i wannt that in this world cup play ONLY the best teams, not the teams that are there with cheating and i am sure the French people wannt the same.I am sure the French peopel wannt the clean victory too so why not play another gane to see who is better. And this referee must be punished and throw out from the football.I hope in world cup there will not be such a referee because it will kill the game.

I have to say that I love Paris and also that I did like the French people very much the last time I was in France, and to me that's not going to change because of any football match. My country has lost to France in several occasions, at least one of them involved the ref's arguably wrong decisions, but after all, although I understand the fury of the Irish, I believe the dust will eventually settle down and we will look at France as it is and not at Henry's face:D:.

P.S.
Should have posted this one month from now, now getting ready to take shelter from the flak:D:

Bernard , stop beating around the bush and tell us what you really think of the french ;).

From a non soccer/football person i find that theres to much money for some players no LOYALTY and so much violence.Even here in Australia when our league first started people going to games with there country flags (Not Australian flags)and they would punch the **** out of each other, about something that happened years ago in THERE countrys.Ive heard storys that in England or Scotland if you support one team and walk into another teams boozer you get the **** punched out of you,i dont understand this its only a game.We have rivalrys over here but at the end of the day we have a beer together and a bit of bragging and thats that.Just MO but why didn't the bloke who handballed say "Hey ref no goal handball"????? or is being in the world cup more important than sleeping well at night. If im wrong about any of the above im sure i will be told but like i said i dont follow the game, just what i read and see on the news.Im not having a go at the English or Scots, this isnt personel just MO.......................:)

Not knowing a thing about soccer, just curious did the USA make the World Cup?

There is no cheating in rugby union.
It is a game for hooligans played by gentlemen.
