Is It Just Me? (1 Viewer)

Looks like you're going to need a bigger boat.

It's a natural progression that collectors drop out/cut back/lose interest in a hobby, any hobby really.

That's the nature of hobbies.

Having been a dealer for 15 years, my customer base has changed dramatically from when I first started 15 years ago, 10 years ago, even 5 years ago. Some customers have been there with me since day one, others became customers just today. Collectors come and go, old customers drop out, new ones step up to take their place; again, that's the nature of the beast.

Newer collectors don't have space issues, which for the most part is an issue for just about everyone; space to properly display your figures and space to store the boxes as well.

I've been collecting for over 40 years; took a break for about 10 years, mostly in my high school and college years, came back in around my late late 20's, so glad I did as at this point, as in today, I have never enjoyed the hobby more, I love collecting my 20mm figures, that's never going to stop for me, I'm having way too much fun with this.

For those of you who are losing your enthusiasm/passion/enjoyment of the hobby, I wish you the best of luck should you decide to drop out.

Human beings change. It's in the nature if things. Change is just natural. So find something that interests you. I have become generally bored with WW II but that doesn't mean I give up on collecting so I've gravitated to American Civil War since that is what I do a lot of reading about nowadays. I buy a lot of Trophy and FL and am quite happy, not to mention I don't have to worry about retirements and all that stuff.

I am seeing the same thing happen to my collecting habits. I tend to differ from most members of this forum as I seem to lean more in favor of the "cheaper" alternatives, i.e. FoV and 21st Century Toys pieces, with only a smattering of the more expensive Britains, Frontline, etc. Lately the available products in my area of interest has virtually dropped to nothing and although it had made me hunt for the more expensive lines (on ebay, not retail), I find that my interest is dropping pretty steeply. I used to make customs and conversions pretty regularly at a rate of about one every one-two months, but I haven't finished one since this summer. I find the root of the problem being that since I cannot buy new things to keep me hooked on the hobby, that other areas, like my customs and conversions, drop off as well. I actually dusted off a project (Hinchliffe 54mm white metal PAK 43) tonight that I haven't looked at in months because I am trying to reinvigorate my productivity. I had it completely built, just needed to paint it, but for some reason I never finished it.

Anyway, just my 2 cents

BLReed,
You are right, members often do not sign in so my comment about guests is not correct. However the numbers looking, whoever they may be, seems to have gone up.

I echo Warriors thoughts on his experience and collectors stopping and new ones starting.

Regards
Brett

I think the problem with 1/30 WW2 range is there to much German item made every month witch after a while get boring where the demand for all these stuka comimg from with three company's making them? I know German stuff sell but come on .I could see myself collecting Zulu wars or Waterloo range witch give you a even balance

With the latest development of a tremendous amount of offerings, unfortunately along with rather steep prices, I found myself finally to get a better concept of collecting.
The "Oh, I like those, I need them, I need them all and I need them now" has changed to a careful pick and choose.
After all, I never could keep all of the stuff I bought anyway. When a new line or new figures came out that I wanted, I had to sell some to have funds for buying the new ones.
By now, I am at a point where I really do appreciate single figures or sets that I have, and am very determined to keep it that way.
Collecting has become more enjoyable for me with this new attitude.

I think its quite natural for companies to make a Stuka and there be a market for it, it is after all an iconic piece of German weaponry along with the Tiger , ME109 etc. No perhaps not every Stuka from all mfrs will sell out, but its going to please a lot of folk and there will maybe be some left over in months to come for new collectors joining the hobby. I also think you shouldn't worry too much about all German releases this year Neil, I think we will probably see plenty of Allied stuff too:wink2:
