Sorry boys, even tho I'm not from Canada, what a sport!
If you have never been to a NHL game and sat close to the ice, you will never realize how fast and rough this sport is.
Never put on a pair of ice skates until I was 24 years old, but after learning to skate played hockey until 4 years ago and retired from the sport at age 58.
I kinda feel like a sissy as there are still guys I skated with who are older than me still playing.
Now I enjoy the family tradition as I watch my 7 year old grandson play.
To hell with the Rams, "Lets go Blues"
Gary

When I was in Worcester we had the AHL Icecats and as of 2006 they have a new AHL team, Worcester Sharks. The games were cheap. I think the Icecats were a farm team for the Blues. I was into NHL hockey as a kid growing up in the 70s with a great Bruins team. Was always a great game when the Bruins played the Canadians. Always pretended I was Bobby Orr or Gilles Gilbert or Guy Lefleur when playing hockey. I actually have started watching it more this year even though here in Hawaii I only get Foxwest for hockey so I have to watch Kings games. Lot easier to watch hockey on tv now with all the camera angles.

Hi
BIG LEAFS FAN.I`m in Boston next weekend so I may get to the Boston and Red Wings game I hope.
GO LEAFS
Cheers
Dave

Live in NJ so you think I should should root for the Devils. NO, WAY! Let's go Blue, Let's go Rangers!:)

I have started to get into hockey again, after years of not being able to see the Balckhawks on TV. The Blackhawks are on TV again and they selling out again after not selling out for a couple of years. I think seeing them on TV again has something to do with the growing popularity again. The father of the current owner refused to put on the local channels, after his death his son put them back on TV again.

A Caps fan here, I have followed the Capitals as long as I can remember, been threw alot of disappointing seasons I must say, I'm not a die hard but I always try and keep up with what's going on in the NHL.....Sammy

Long been a Detroit Red Wings fan.Went through many years when I never thought I'd see them win the cup. Well, been blessed many times over and actually got to have my picture taken with the cup during the Detroit /Carolina series. I have been caught up in the Carolina fan base since moving here in 99.
Like Gary mentioned it's amazing to go see a live game. These guys are huge on skates and it can be a pretty fast paced action type game with the new rules and such allowing more of an offence punch.Alot more scoring going on these days without all the clutching and grabbing of the past.Throw in a good ol hockey fight and there's nothing like it.

Gary, you know I'm a Hockey fan. My B's are back, thank you Blues for Dennis Wideman, he has turned out to be one heck of a defencemen. I kind of liken him to Paul Coffey the way he moves the puck. I know my B's gave up a good player in Brad Boyes, but they needed a puck moving defencemen. It was a win win trade.:)

Bruins fan as well; like Lee, I grew up with the big bad Bruins of the 70's, Orr Espo, Cheevers, Cashman, Hodge, Pie, that team was loaded.

The Bruins look pretty impressive this year, been to several games so far, pretty easy ticket to get ahold of, Patriots are impossible and the Celtics are tough as well......................

George, I like the way you have been defending the Pats, I would have jumped in, but you were doing so well. As far as Hockey goes, this should get the Hockey world blood flowing, Bobby Orr is the best all around hockey player ever. He had a plus rating of 132 one season. He did everything skate, pass, score and check and fight. As great a talent as Wayne Gretzky was, he could not have played in the original six hockey years. The reason I say this, you had to check and fight wether you wanted to or not. He just was not built for it physically. Gordie Howe was best forward of his day, but even the Great Gordie Howe had to take a back seat to Robert Gordon Orr. I even think Mark Messier was an all around better talent than Wayne Gretzky, that is just my opinion. I always use the original six years to guide my opinion. Mark Messier could have played in the original six years. Boston has been blessed with great defencemen. Eddie Shore, Bobby Orr, Brad Park, Ray Bourque, Gord Kluzak, now Zedano Chara. The Big Bad Bruins will always be how I contrast each Bruin team. Ok Hockey fans, blast away.

No doubt Bobby Orr is one of the greatest players of all time, changed the sport in as much the defense now got into the offense. My pick for the best player, and this would be if he was 100% healthy would be Mario Lemieux.
All his injuries and illness made this impossible, but what a talent.
Personally I believe the players of today, on a whole, would skate circles around the players of the origional six, however when it comes to toughness, "Ole time hockey", those old guys win hands down.

Gary I spaced out Mario, I agree what a talent. He got his first NHL goal on his first shift against the Boston Bruins. He never let up on the B's until his Cancer battle. As far as the skating circles around the old time players, it depends if the ole time players had the same training facilities of today's players. The old players came from farms up in Canada, they were just grunt strong from their work. If they trained in specifics like power skating I doubt today's players would be able to skate circles around them. Not to mention, the pain they would be in. The game has changed a bit to much with the infractions they are calling now. The old time hockey players would live in the sin bins just from their glares at the refs. Today's players are bigger, but not stronger.

Although a UNC grad and right here in the midst of college basketball world, there is nothing better than a live hockey game, especially a good playoff game!! I am a big Carolina Hurricanes fan (and collector) and go to about 15-20 regular season games a year, plus the playoffs when they get in. One of the biggest misses of my life was Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals in 2006. I was taking my wife on an anniversary cruise. The playoffs ended much later than usual that year, and I saw all but Game 7 (great cruise - but ugh anyway, right?). I sold my ticket to a friend. Game 5, lost in OT on a turnover, was one of the low points of my sports life. I have also been to the Hall of Fame in Toronto and games in St. Louis and Toronto.

I see there are some Wings fans on here. Another of my most memorable sports experiences was Game 3 of the 02 Finals when the Wings beat the Hurricanes in 3 OTs. A disappointing loss for sure, but getting to see all those great Wings players and a tremendous game was something I will remember forever.

REDWINGS!!!!! BACK to BACK! Wings and Bruins in the Stanley cup 4 games to 2. Just calling it now :D Sorry Warrior, Bruins are my second favorite hockey team and i hope they make it to the Stanley Cup but the New York yankees of hockey the Detroit Redwings will be in their way.

Sahara, not sure if the Bruins will make it that far as injuries are taking their toll at this point and they are not deep enough to make up for it.

I hate to say it, but I see a one and one for them this year, getting knocked out by a 7th or 8th seed.

Also, the Red Wings are not the Yankees of hockey; although they spend money, at least they have championships to show for it, unlike the Yankees, they of the highest payroll in baseball the past 8 years and zero as in zip, none, nil, nada, the big donut, gatz championships to show for it....

I guess the four Championships in the 5 prior years don't count for anything? When the Red Wings or the Red Sox have 1/4 as many Champioships as the Yankees, then you can compare them . . . if you are still among the living . . .:D

No I guess that is not really a good comparison seeing the cap now prohibits the spending. In the late 90's the wings use to spend alot of money to get the players they wanted but that has now changed thanks to the cap (Which I believe is a good thing). Louis by no means am I even gonna compare championships with the yankees. I hate to say it even though I root against them every time they play I still have to respect what they have achieved and the things they do for the game of baseball. All I'm saying is that the face of baseball is the NY yankees and the face of hockey is the Detroit Redwings. I'm sure I'll hear it now from the Redsox Fans and Montreal fans.:}

Warrior are you gonna be at the MI toy soldier show this weekend?

I agree with you 100% percent about the Red Wings. They are one of the original six, so they have a long standing history and they have been on top in recent times unlike the Canadians, who have been invisible recently.

Regarding Michigan; I'm taking a pass this year, maybe the summer show.

Have fun and I hope you find some nice additions for your collection there.

Just watched on You Tube some old hockey film of the Stanley Cup finals for 68, 69, &70 when the Blues were in it.
Not that I didn,t know it but could you imagine players now not wearing helmets or the goalies not wearing a face mask.
Now if the goalie somehow loses his helmet-facemask, the referee immediately stops play.
I believe the turning point was when that Minnesota North Stars player, Masterson died after cracking his head. Also thought of that hockey fight between Ted Green and Wayne Maki where Maki clubbed Green square on the melon with his stick causing a severe injury. Now that,s ole time hockey!
