Wow - It's getting brutal out there on buying Old Civil War Britains Sets on Ebay.

I have been jumped, sniped, and over ran - for weeks now !

This time - I had the good fortune to be around for the closing of the auction for a Confederate Artillery Set. Sure enough - a weasel came up at the last minute to snipe it away. Unfortunately - HEAVY LOBBYIST GUNS WERE WAITING AND BOOM !

Yes- the enemy was wasted ! :D

Has anyone else buy trying to buy older Britains sets too ? Have you seen this upsurge in interest in these sets like I have ?

Hi Ron,

It seems to vary from time to time but generally the ACW have been great sellers and usually command top dollar. Which set number did you pick up?

I won the #17239 - CSA Cannon and Gun Crew Set :)

I lost a small two man set w/ cannon - I always seem to be sniped on these sets.

I too have noticed the sudden price increase being demanded by sellers for the old ACW figures especially on UK Ebay. Recent listings for some of the old 3 figure sets are:

17102 Reb Firing Line
17529 Reb Firing Line
17014 Reb Advancing

All at £60.00 ($96.00) with the 2 figure Reb casualty set 17291 & 17111 Command set at £50.00 ($80.00)

Only last year you could pick up any number of these sets from dealers at the London show for less than a tenner a box. Sure! supply and demand will always result in a fluctuating price but what is more surprising is that the sets I have mentioned have a certain notoriety amongst ACW collectors as being just plug awful figures-body proportions all over the scale-skinny legs-melon heads. Definitely not Britain's finest hour. Then again there's no counting for individual taste but I still consider the prices being demanded from Ebay dealers for these sets as being excessively inflated.

In my opinion and for what it's worth your purchase of the Confederate gun crew just passes muster but for God's sake dont bother to bid for the add on Reb artillery figures-they really do look like three mis-shapen aliens-Trust me!

The same thing happened with the first series Waterloo range (and those sculpts are pretty good). I expected the value to increase, but some of the Ebay.uk asking prices are ridiculous. Obviously there is a glut on some items, but for the most part, the 3 piece sets are commanding hefty prices.

Hi Guys,

I sometime wonder why some sets command such high retired prices and other do not The Waterloo sets are ones I watch, especially the Collectors Club sets, they are over the top in their prices since they retired.

That set you picked up Ron is a good one so nice pick on that one. As for the others keep a weather eye out and I am sure you will be able to nab them soon enough.

I do hear you on some of the looks on a few of these old britains sets - I really have been looking at Artillery Sets for the diorama ideas that I have for my collection.

I can't understand this up serge either - like you said - you could have picked these sets up a while back for about 30-40% less.

But, then again - look at me trying to pick them up now - I am sure thats what is happening with other collectors too !

I will post some pics when I get a few more sets in place.

Thanks - I believe you are right - more should pop up on Ebay as collectors thin their collections and drop them on Ebay. I have been happy with what I have seen so far - it just these darn snipers who get you at the end !

Guys,
Quick comments -

1. Napoleonics Britains 1st series, took me a long time to complete, a few of those sets are scarce and costly.

2. Club Waterloo - not many made, mostly in England, hard to get, original retail was high too.

3. Civil War - as the glutton of stocks from dealers and oversales were "blown" out on ebay and inventory clearances, there was a large oversupply. That has now dwindled and you will continue to see prices that shock you.

Easy answer is as something becomes harder and harder to find, the price jumps and the demand seemingly increases!

I am telling you it is really weird - I mean it wasn't that long a go you could pick some of these older figures up for a song. Now

Probally - a lot of this has to do with the wonderful work W. Britain's are putting out now. More interest in the range due to a tremendous improvement of quality of their Civil War figures !
