Jeep Conversions, et.al. (2 Viewers)

All is quiet in the Western Front! Nothing to be excited with the latest releases of KC, Figarti and TG...Germans, Germans, Germans. So I thought I will do some conversions on my extra sets while waiting for more exciting releases (Gives me time to save up )

THE LRDG COMMUNICATION JEEP
This is a Testor/New Ray 1/32 kit. It is more of 1/30 as the body is the same size as KC's or Figarti's. The only problems are: The tires are off-scale/thick, the front tires are way towards the rear and almost touching the fenders. It has no engine covers by the front wheel fenders.

The finished models uses tires from Honor Bound amphibian Jeeps (I bought some unfinished and unassembled fittings and stowage from unfinished models) when the company ceased their AFV production. The Vickers MG and figure in the back seat are from KC's EA Bren Gun Carrier. Driver is from KC LRDG CWT 30 Truck. Other accessories are from FOV, HB, and KC.

The Jeep has a pre-moded winshield in the "up " position. i have to carve this out and replaced with left over windshields fro plastic old monogram plastic kits and wrapped with canvas as anti-glare. Antennae in the rear can be removed and replaced with an MG

THE GENERAL"S JEEP:

This is the KC MP Jeep BBA 04 (Friend or Foe?). Took out the canvass top and replace with folded support frame using paper clips and rear part wrapped canvass to simulate rolled canvas top. (details not shown as it gets covered with stowage. Took out the original MP driver (have to be patient shaking it loose or it will break into pieces) and replaced seat with FOB Jeep which I cut up with a Dremel tool. Scratch-built the back support tp match with the passenger side seat. Re-positioned spare tire to the rear passenger side (as seen from pictures of Maj. General Barton's Jeep). Folded windshield and wrapped with anti-glare canvass. Driver and rear passenger are Figart's figure and officer by the MG seat is from KC's M-10 Tank Destroyer. Note: The seat is removable so I can also use the original MP driver as an option (General's were often driven around by MP's)
I also made an extra steering wheel (slips through a copper tubing) for an unoccupied jeep diorama scenes.

Just for comparison in scale herewith both jeeps. Testors/New Ray is actually on the 1/30 scale side

THE SIGNAL CORPS TELECOM TRUCK.

Dodge produced for the Canadian Army in 1943 T212/D8A Truck (8-CWT, 4X4). It was their version of the WC 52. The U.S. Army used some of these and were modified for telecom use and designated WC 43. Some field modification were made extending the rear panels to accomodate tools and other communication equipments.

Working with this model is a tough one. The only model available is a resin cast and is in 1/35 scale of the Canadian model. The closest was the a 1948 Dodge Power Wagon in 1/30 scale die-cast metal by First Gear. It was good enough. The model has the similar features of the 1943/44 Power Wagon with the exception of the front grille.

I took out the original grille and replaced with the grille of the 1/35 GMC truck by Tamiya. The grille is similar to the WC series but bigger. Scale wise, it will fit the WC grille in 1/30 scale. The Windows of the 1948 Power Wagon had windbreaker for ventilation. I have to remove these as the 1943 version did not have this feature. Next I scavenge for some tool boxes in a train shop that will make up the the tool boxes on the rear panel area and over-hangs by the rear wheel well housing. Added the the copper tubing to make up the roof frame that will hold the ladder. The ladder was from a 1/48 scale diecast firetruck. I have to dis assemble the whole model and sprayed paint with olive drab.

Model in the photo is 9% done. I just need to waether it and replace the "Signal Corp" decal. What you see in the photo is a made up one using my printer. Maybe a few more stowage and fittings will complete the project.

The bumper codes represent #3 vehicle of the 142nd Signal Company which was organic to the 2nd Armored Division.

Where can I find the Testors Jeep?{sm0}

I really like what you did to it and would like a chance to do something along those lines.

You could find them at any hobby shops....Hobby Lobby, Hobby Bench, and sometimes at Target and Walmart. I believe New Ray sold their rights to Testors. You could get them for as low as $5-10 each. The tires needs to be re-positioned to correct ground clearance. Tires are too thick and you need to scratch-build the engine covers by the wheel well (I use cardboard and shape to form. Once in position, I coat it with super glue to harden and water-proof the cardboard). Happy modeling!

Really great conversions! You got some nice work out of that Testor's jeep. The K&C Jeep conversion is really a delight to look at. Nice thinking about being able to change drivers or have it unoccupied. That will lend lots of flexibility to photos or dioramas.

The Dodge truck was a really ambitious project. The result look quite nice.

Keep up the good work - quite inspiring.
