The battle of Tamai is most famous for the "Fuzzy Wuzzies" breaking a british square consisting of Black Watch Highlanders and Royal Welch Fusiliers. Wouldn't it be awesome of John did a second square with these regiments, as well as Hadendowa Beja Warriors (called Fuzzy Wuzzies because of their 70's style bushy afro's)?

I'm with you Mike! I plan on building the corner of the square with the Gordons and the Royal Marines/Naval Brigade, and would build a second (broken) square with the Blackwatch and the RWF. The figures look fantastic in person. I have been drooling over my Death of Gordon vignette for two days now. The 10 figures with the stairs make an excellent stand alone mini-diorama.

How will the Death of Gordon be sold.
The whole lot together or will you be able to buy it in pieces?
When will these sets be in stock

I believe it will be broken up into 3 or 4 sets. I think the initial release in December will be the the stairs and 5 figures (likely those marked in red) Then add on sets for Jan, Feb etc. On the stair setting there is also the dead figure behind the rail (marked in blue) which might make up set 1? My cost guess at $32 per figure plus the stair structure likey over $200

Next question, but who stocks JJ figures?

The set is fabulous looking and I had a chance to talk to John. I took some photos which I will post later although I'm not sure they're better than any posted so far.

I think Randy is right by the way about how the sets will be issued. I meant to ask John about price but other collectors wanted to talk to him and I never got a chance to talk to him again. Sorry.

I wish he would break it up into smaller more affordable sets.

Don't know if this has been mentioned but John showed how he designed some of the figures to lock into the stairs so they don't fall out. Very ingenious.

That will be great. If I can't buy nothing else I must have this diorama.I hope John puts out at least 500 sets this is going to go fast.A lot of excitement over this and I agree about the faces (except for Rogers).I think 2010 is going to be a great year.

Thanks Martyn, I managed to find a bit more info in addition to this. 2 British Infantry Bdes at Tamai are mentioned as follows: Gordons, Royal Irish Fusiliers, and KRRC while the second included the Black Watch, 65th (York and Lancaster), and a Naval Bde contingent. Cannot provide details on artillery and cavalry at the moment. Honestly, I'd love to see any of these in time.

Hi Dave
The artillery consisted of 7pdr and 9pdr guns along with Gardner and Gatling machine guns from the Naval Brigade. I believe the Cavalry were from the 10th and 19th Hussars

Was wondering if there is an historical precedent for this square containing Naval Bde. and Highlanders sometime during the Sudan campaign of 1884-85. I am guessing so, though wonder if anybody could elaborate on this.

Dave

Here is a detail of an 1884 wood engraving showing the British square used at the 2nd Battle of El Teb on Februrary 29, 1884. The detail shows the Naval Brigade at the angle between the Gordons and the 1st York and Lancaster Regt. According to the text accompanying the illustration the Naval Brigade was manning 1 Gardener and 2 Gatling guns at the angle of the square. The illustration was based on a sketch done by a "Special Artist" at the battle.

Brad, great photos, they show all the details, many thanks for posting. I am not normally an absolute fan of Jenkins figures but this set looks really stunning.

Cheers,
Paulo
